There are some very blatand rap haters on this board. Makes sense, along with country, it's the most easily disliked genre out there. Anyhow, like all forms of music, it has its lows (pop-rap), and its incredible highs. Here are some of those, a few albums that everyone should at least give a chance to:
Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Fear of a Black Planet
The Roots' Things Fall Apart
Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising
Run-D.M.C.'s Raising Hell
Black Star's Black Star
A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory
Wu Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (46 Chambers)
N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton
Ice-T's O.G. Original Gangster
Dr. Dre's The Chronic
There are tons, tons more. You may dismiss gangster rap for being too nihilistic and too pro-violence. That's certainly a valid viewpoint. But there is a reason that kind of music started... to chronical a kind of life that most of us, with a cushy, middle-class upbringing and decent shot at education couldn't hope to understand. So we fear it.
Theres more to rap than that. There is the funky (Outkast, Gnarls Barkley), the intellectual (Black Star, A Tribe Called Quest), the trippy (Massive Attack, Tricky)... theres so much out there.
Its music, and music is meant to be embraced in all its glory and all its forms...
Anyone who'd like to, feel free to add your own albums.

I enjoy music by E-40, young Bloodz, De La Soul, The Roots, Beastie Boys....
There are some great rap acts out there.
The remix of "Damn" by the Young Bloodz is amazing...

I can only agree with the Dr. Dre, the other groups I don't exactly like all too much.
I do like some Eminem songs (usually the funny ones, my favorite of his recently was Shake That Ass for Me). Some Three Six Mafia is always good, some of the Akon and Young Jezzy songs, and that pretty much does it for my Rap taste... im not all too big of a fan of hip hop and certinally not one certin group though many odd out songs do catch my interest time to time

Thanks for posting.
I agree with Lauren Hill and Outkast. I still listen to Lil' Kim and some others at times. While it doesn't "scare" me. Some of the themes just get old. I understand a lot of it is meant to raise awareness and not just "be cool like a gangsta type of crap".

I would argue that a lot of these albums tent to focus on themes other than violence.

My ear didn't adjust to rap before ten or twelve years ago.
When did rap really start anyway? I know it didn't all start with Death Row Records.
Edit: If anyone knows of any other documentaries about rap other than Tupac: The Resurrection I would be interested in watching them.

Hip hop's roots can be traced to the late 70s. First hip hop 'hit'.

Aesop Rock... all CDs... but if I had to pick one, it would probably be Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives.
Apathy - Eastern Philosophy
Black Eyed Peas - Bridging the Gap
Common - Be
Dilated Peoples - Neighborhood Watch
Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
Ice Cubes Greatest Hits (Although I NEVER understood why Ghetto Vet isn't on it, it is his best song IMO)
Juelz Santana - What the Games Been Missing
Jurassic 5 - Power in Numbers
Ludacris - Red Light District
Styles of Beyond - Megadef
ANYTHING by Outkast.
Scarface - The Fix
The Beatnuts - Milk Me
Fort Minor - The Rising Tied
The Streets - all 3 cds... Original Pirate Material, The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living, and A Grand Don't Come For Free
Twista - Kamikaze
Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers
There is my short list
