Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Decal takes forever to load
|
It really takes long to load , i downloaded the new version and have no other troubles at all with it.
Loading takes so long , when i use dual log to log in my account ,the first client will be up and running with no decal since it took to long.
My hard disk is freshly defraged so that wont be the problem.
here is an export

Yes well. You are asking a lot of your PC. The ACclient itself is a memory and CPU hog. Decal is a memory and CPU hog. Now you want to run two clients, Decal and some plugins. Small wonder it takes a long to load.
AC isn't very fast to launch in full-screen mode with only one client.

ARE you sure it's decal that's taking forever and NOT the 200,000K chat files of Eltank?
slow load times have historically been traced back to huge eltank chat files. check yours and if big see about erasing them. that should speed up load time.

I've been having the same problem. I use Drakier's dual log. I also have 2GB of RAM, a 128MB video card and an Athlon 3200 processor. It's not some uber gaming system, but it's far from a slow system. For several days I struggled to figure out why Decal was not showing up ingame when I logged in. I finally noticed how long it was taking decal to start up when I would start it seperately. After rebooting my system, if i click the decal icon on my desktop, it takes a good 15 seconds for the Decal icon to show up in the system tray. For a computer that's an eternity. The previous version took somthing like 3-5 seconds IIRC.
So I began to start Decal manually, before I started the dual login application. That gets Decal back in the game for me. Hopefully the next version of Decal will be a bit faster to load.

Takes 4 seconds for me to load... dual logging is not slow, never has been... the message about memory hogs seems a bit exagerated or just not specific... Your system is more powerful than mine except the video card, BUT the video card has to do most of the work for decal and AC. (so I guess a video memory hog and GPU hog is appropriate... )
I don't think decal loading should be an excessive drain on the video because it doesn't draw any overlays or do anything video intensive till you log in.
I have looked at your export and compared it to mine and the only differences are:
You run el tank, hush and treestats when I don't. (disable these 1 at a time, exit decal and restart in case one of those is taking a long time to load)
You have a newer vesion of msvbvm60.dll than I do, I got .82, u got .85... probably no issue here.
I have atl70.dll version 7.0.9466.0, you dont' have it at all... don't think this is an issue either, but google it to get it.
Last but not lease, I have a 256 ati card, u got a 128 nvidia card... again, don't know how much this effects loading of decal when no graphics are involved... but more video memory would not hurt...
Hope this helps.

El tank doesnt log any tells for me , i turned that off a while back.
When i only start decal it takes just as long to load.
Before the latst version of decal i didnt have that problem.
As soon as i get to my pc i will stop the time it takes.

You know what's funny - when I started using Alpha 7 on patch day I thought it was wonderful - very zippy and crash free - now I am seeing the long load times issue - what could have changed? I installed Decal and my plugin set on patch day, no changes there. Interesting.

Thank you for you suggestioons tekblade.
Even with now plug ins loaded it takes 16 seconds to load for me.
Now my Harddisk is sure not the fastes but i would notice other stuff beeing superslow too and i don't see that.
Guess i just have to live with it.
btw , while decal is loading , cpu never gets over 12 % used.

Yeah, happens. Dengent is a managed program now, so teh framework must load for DenAgent to load -- the garbage collector, all the .net internal stuff has to start up, etc -- then DenAgent has to be JIT compiled, and finally it and load and run. We can reduce the JIT time with ngen (and expect that in the next release) but we can't do anything about the .NET loading times.

OH he meant that load, not the load of Decal once AC starts.
as if i ever see this problem, reboot hit the decal3 icon in the folder tray and it starts up during the load after reboot.
i never close it down until i stop decal and de-install a plugin right before installing an upgrade.
THat way i load Decal maybe 1 or 2 a month just turning the monitor off when i wander away.

The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is the .NET virtual machine similar to a Java engine. You can configure a PC to load your Java engine during startup.
You should be able to do the same thing with CLR. Of course, we are talking Microsoft here so there is no guarantees. Just because Sun designed Java to be launched at system startup does not mean Microsoft has to provide the same functionality.
One thing to note though, like all virtual machines CLR puts an additional load on your PC by consuming memory and CPU cycles even when there are no .NET applications active. You would have to decide if you really want the performance penalty caused by having CLR load at startup.
I never allow things like Acroreader, Java, and so on to load during startup. Instead, I take the hit when I launch the first applcation. For Java, I normally kill the Java vitual machine via the task manager when I am done.

With a modern computer, those kinds of performance hits are negligible.
What IS noticeable is tapping your fingers while Decal loads, when you are anxious to get in the game.

If you have another .NET application and you start it, it should accomplish the task.
If you really want .NET loaded at startup, find a .NET system service and install it.

Finding the correct .NET system service and installing is no simple task. I certainly not going over the MSDN and rooting around looking for the correct download, instructions, etc. But then again, I do not want tha dratted thing running unless I need it.

I believe so. I think this is why you have to get a different piece of code to fire off during system startup.

You are right. .NET only loads when an application is started that needs the framework. .NET will unload soon after the last .NET application terminates.
So if you want to get .NET running during system startup and stay running, you have to create a .NET service. The references point to developer information on how to create, install, setup such a service so that will being running during system startup.
Double Ugh!
