I'm working on trying to contact register.com to find out why they never told me it was expiring, and why my account has disappeared (I suspect the two are related...) I'll post more information when I find out more... If this takes very long I'll probably redirect something like treestats.akilla.net to it or something similar. Bleh.

if you know in advance that it's expiring, you can renew it up to 5 years (maybe more). But, that doesn't help when you either don't read your email (like I did with a design company that a friend was trying to start up a couple years back), or your registrar doesn't send you the notification.

I did a search and found that the domain needs to be renewed..... and from what I can see, that is all that needs to be done.... 
Good Luck... I know that this can be a pain in the Asheron's Call
