I was going to make a poll for this but im too tired too
This is from you, who do you think the best bass player is, living dead or in a coma, doesnt matter
If you dont know one well....... go study
Anyway, Geddy lee has to take the title easily. Godly purely godly he is
In a few years I would like to say Chris Wolstenholme of muse... Listen to the bass line in Hystira ... with time he will be godly

John Entwistle. On the second disc of the special edition of The Who's "The Kids are Alright" they have footage of Entwistle playing the baselines to a couple of songs, with all the other audio gone. It's some amazing stuff, definitely my favorite bassist by far.

You say Geddy Lee, and then I ask, what memorable thing did he do? Then you say, oh but he was very good at bass, listen to so and so songs, he is technically proficient, etc.
At the end of the day, does he have something to match Paul McCartney's irresistable work on "Something"?
To match the ferociousness of Entwistle's work as a "lead bassist" on "Substitute," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "The Real Me," etc.?
In that vein, when I think of the best rock bassist, I think he should be one who leads a rhythm section while providing other members the freedom for musical development and experimentation. And if we're talking the best, he better have done something that nobody else had done before and done it well. Being a little bit more technically skilled doesn't impress me.
But Peter Hook's work on "She's Lost Control," "Disorder," "The Perfect Kiss," "Bizarre Love Triangle," they revolutionized bass playing while being so natural that you don't at first give a second thought about bass being played that way.
Now, once you open up the discussion to all genres, I'd be willing to judge purely on skills and solos and what not, Geddy Lee can't touch Stanley Clarke or Jaco Pastorious. Listen to "Some Time Ago/La Fiesta" by Chick Corea to hear Stanley Clarke (and that only is what he can do on an acoustic bass, he could do some mad electric work) and "Teen Town" by Weather Report to hear Jaco Pastorious. Impressed? Should be.
Or what about Larry Graham who invented slap bass?
You see, there are so many pioneers who broke new grounds and then there are the technicians who perfected them. Geddy Lee is kind of a meh choice among those giants.

Fine, Roger Walters of Pink Floyd. Even though I don't consider base guitar skill that high of a accomadation as its so much easier to play than other instruments.

"In that vein, when I think of the best rock bassist, I think he should be one who leads a rhythm section while providing other members the freedom for musical development and experimentation."
Heh you just described what could be several outstanding bass players over the years... Geddy Lee among them.
And with all due respect Paul McCartney has no place on any list of best anything (favourite I can see, but greatest?) He is a solid musician, but mentioning him in the company of many bassists listed in the post, is like saying Charlie Watts is a "great" drummer.
Anyhow, these "who is the best <insert instrument here>" are silly when you think about it. There have been many GREAT bass players over the years, some better than others overall, some more proficient at slapping or on fretless instruments.
And unless I missed it, no one mentioned Chris Squire, Gary Peacock or Jeff Berlin (incredible bassist).

For the "best" bassist (obviously objective) I believe there should be a balance of technical ability and knowing when to hold the groove. I've always liked Billy Sheehan, Stanley Clarke, Chris Squire and Geddy Lee in this regard (plus the fact that they get monster tone).

I love these "best" threads. Even though, there never really is a "best".
For me, I like Squire, Entwhistle, Dave Schools, Tony Levin, Rocco Prestia (Tower of Power), and George Porter Jr.

Les is probably the most outrageous bassists ever, but not on my list of best bassists. Everything he does seems centered around strangeness done on the bass. He doesn't adapt well to others and that (in my book) takes points away. Not saying he isn't great, but rather that I find others to be functionally much better.

i hate how people think that flea is the best bassist of all time. even for his genre he is not as good as everyone thinks he is. I have 3 choices for best bassist of all time.
1. Les Claypool
2. Victor Wooten
3. Jaco Pastorius
yes, jaco pastorius was a great bass player, but i do not think he was the best. Victor Wooten is just as good as Jaco Pastorius. But, I believe Les Claypool is by far the best bassist of all time. I have seen him live twice and it is incredible. There is no one not even Jaco Or Victor Wooten that can play the bass like les claypool. I also believe that Les claypool is the most rounded bass player, if you listen to primus he has rock, funk, jazz and many more styles incorporated into his bass lines. if les claypool played bass like Victor Wooten or Jaco Pastorious i believe he could play jsut as well as either of them. I do not feel the same vice versa.

yesill agree that les is a strange person, but he does not do anything strange centered on the bass. he created his own insstrument called the whamola which is a one stringbass that he plays with a drumstick, yes a little weird but extremly innovative, not one other bassist could do that. also his style of music fits perfectly with the way he plays bass. id describe it as funk metal or funk rock, he can playy jazzy like victor wooten. he is definetly a best.

LOL nice criteria. It immediately brought to mind "This amp goes to 11!"
Strange and unique do not automatically translate to best. I do not deny his skill and talent, but I'm a longtime bassist and I doubt he would crack my top 10. I've seen him live and he's certainly entertaining for whatever that's worth. Sheehan probably put on the best bassist live show I've ever seen with Mr. Big. The music was... well nm the music, him and Paul Gilbert working off of each other was spectacular. I've also enjoyed watching Geddy Lee and Doug Pinnick live. Pinnick had the bass tone from hell (I guess a wall of SVTs doesn't hurt. Much...).

And with all due respect Paul McCartney has no place on any list of best anything (favourite I can see, but greatest?) He is a solid musician, but mentioning him in the company of many bassists listed in the post, is like saying Charlie Watts is a "great" drummer.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mccartney played some of the most unique and musically innovative bass lines in pop music for the time-so maybe not "best" but certainly one of the most influential...

as far as jaco pastorius not being able to play like les claypool you are quite wrong.
i have seen both and jaco shreds les. jaco was strumming like less in the early 70's
i was in the san francisco music scene when primus was coming up in the late 80's early 90's before they were signed, and played in a band that opened for them twice. i had the opportunity to chat with les a couple of times and jaco was a huge influence on his playing, and he wished he could even approach his (jaco's) montrous ability innovation and style on the bass guitar.

Les is a great player, and I've had the opportunity to see him 4 times now, even once when he played with Oysterhead (alongside Trey Anastasio and Stuart Copeland). He is a fantastic, fantastic player, but just like Jacopo said, he doesn't have a chance of claiming the #1 spot. To me, it's kind of like Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth's guitarist). Both Moore and Claypool are ****ing unbelievable at their instruments and put on some of the best shows I've seen with those respective instruments, however, calling them the straight up best at those just cant be done. Of course, they deserve incredible heaps of respect for their innovation with effects and technique.

Lets just end this. The Greatest Bassist of all time is NOT Les Claypool but you guessed it Geddy Lee. You see to prove that Geddy Lee is a god to most of you that dont know anything about him i will tell you this. The most valued Possession of the incredible bassist you all Les Claypool is a Signed Bass Guitar by Geddy Lee. So if Geddy Lee is just "Meh" as one of you said then WHY IS IT that Les Claypool is so honered to have it signed and given to him?
And no you dont see Geddy Lee showing off in a Solo so if you just send some video of a guy playing the bass insanely fast you cant just say "yep hes the best he can play fast" You wont find a video of Geddy doing a solo because he shows it in his music he doesnt need to show off. If you ever wanna hear a great bass riff by Geddy check out Cygnus X-1 by Rush great song.
I have every Rush Album and have heard every song by Rush and i listen to alot of Primus and there is no comparison.
