Er, wait, wrong story. This one might be longer.
It was Tuesday evening, September 25, a moderately average day in Long Beach, CA. Mom was in the delivery room, Dad was in the waiting room, watching through the windows—they were showing Hatari at the drive in across the street. Around 9:30 am the next morning, I finally make my appearance; Dad goes out and prints up birth announcements that look like theater tickets—I’m a star! Both my parents were in college at the time (Dad a theater major and Mom an English major) at CSULB, where my grandfather was Dean of Education. What, a child? Dad goes looking for a job, and finds one teaching at Lower Columbia College, so we move to Long Beach, WA.
That didn’t last all that long, they split up when I was 2, and back to Cali I went. A few years later Mom is teaching and I’m in preschool classes at a private school (Pomona Valley Christian), where my friends and I got in so much trouble that they put us in separate classes for Kindergarten. Around about this time I develop the desire to become a paleontologist when I grow up (Mom being the English fiend she was, I could even spell it at that age).
I was in summer school pretty much every year when I was young, cause mom had to teach summers for the extra cash. But I got to stay home to watch the first moon landing, which was amazingly cool. That and the steamer truck full of Major Matt Mason toys I’d acquired by then changed my career inclinations from paleontologist to astronaut. Me and every other kid those days. 
By now, Mom’s gotten married again, to another teacher. He had curly hair and a beard and wore daishikis and played protest songs on his acoustic guitar—enter Ozy’s hippy phase. They took a year off from school, and we traveled around Europe in a VW poptop camper in ’69 and ’70. Just what I remember from that trip would be a post all its own even longer than this one will end up being. Though what I learned on that trip kept me ahead of the curve in school for pretty much the rest of my school years.
I remember standing next to my mother on the Berlin Wall—she got out a lipstick and some napkins, and wrote peace slogans, and held them up for the East German guards to see.
Back in the states, I get to see a ton of the country, as we drive from NY to CA, by way of NC. We end up stopping by to see some friends in San Francisco, where we catch the Broadway cast production of Hair—all hippy tendencies are thereafter firmly cemented.
About a year later, Mom and her second hubby split up, and we end up in the left armpit of the nation, otherwise known as Porterville, CA. Egads, I spent so many years trying to escape that place. My sister was born shortly thereafter (April 1973). Mom was still teaching, and working nights as well, so I ended up pretty much raising my sister.
I continue to do amazingly well in school, always at the top 1% of my class—though I suck terribly at PE being a bit round and very uncoordinated, this ends up costing me Valedictorian status in Jr. High. Jr. High sucked anyway, as my mother taught at the same school I attended, and was the most hated teacher on the campus, which many students often tried to take out on me. Ah well, this too did pass.
The summer between JR High and High School, my mother married again, a chiropractor this time. I had a bad feeling about him from the start, which feeling ended up being dead on.
I’m terribly bored in HS, as it’s evident to me at this point that the public school system has very little to actually offer me. I pretty much stop ding homework and studying, and start cutting classes, but my grades don’t suffer (not yet, anyway). Spent three years on the water polo and swimming teams, which at least was distracting. Oh, and I was in band as well, both marching and concert, played the clarinet. I’d been playing piano and cello, so a new instrument was pretty easy to pick up. Bought my first guitar somewhere in there as well, though I didn’t really play it—I played with it. Spent a lot of time playing frisbee in the park when I supposed to be in some of my classes.
By this time, things are not going well between my mother and her third hubby, here ever after known as The Evil Nazi Chiropractor from Hell™. He beat my mother. And me. And my little sister couldn’t sleep at night, being afraid he would kill her while she slept, despite the fact that she was the only one he never raised a hand to.
So, out the door I went, in the middle of my senior year.
(Hmmm, this is getting long, I'm taking a break for lunch.)

Where was I? Oh yeah...
So, out the door I went, in the middle of my senior year. (yeah, John Lee and George all over that one)
End up at my (maternal) grandparents’ house in Buena Park, CA, which was kind of an interesting place. She was short, skinny, incredibly stubborn and very smart Polish woman, he had retired from the OSS before spending another 20 years as a welfare fraud investigator for the state of CA. Was hard as hell to get away with anything in that house, but I managed to do it anyway.
Finished HS, though not with the kind of grades I’d had earlier—I’d had to repeat two classes, as I’d ditched them often enough to not even manage an F the first time I took them.
That summer I caught The Song Remains the Same at the midnight movies, and thus found the inspiration to actually learn how to play my guitar.
Then I got the bright idea that I was going to go to a local communicy college (Cypress), taking nothing but music-oriented courses--music theory, songwriting, guitar, percussion, and piano for music majors, with water polo thrown in for good measure. I say "bright idea" sarcastically because I was under the illusion that I could pull off a full course load and work full time. Bwahahahaha.... Yeah, that didn't turn out all that well, somehow it turned into quitting both.
A friend from HS showed up soon after, and talked me into enrolling at Control Data Institute with him, we're gonna be programmers! I actually still have a box of Hollerith cards somewhere. Anyway, that didn't work out either, people get funny when you don't pay them the tuition you agreed to (at this point I still had not learned the lesson about school and working full time).
Bam! Busted, after hours, in the park, with an underage girl and very nearly an ounce in my possession. What now? (approaching the summer of '82)
Hey, I know! I'll join....................the Navy!
Hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time, I'd probably stay out of trouble, and pick up a marketable job skill for when I got out.
Boot camp--skate city! Even got a meritorious promotion in the process. "A" School (avionics tech, aka AT)--took to that very well, finished well ahead of the programmed schedule. From there, just a short four years of reserve duty, and in the meantime, I can get a decent job with my new skills, right?
Ack, wrong again. Went back on active duty out of desperation for an income, but not before getting married to the girl I'd been dating the last two years. Did that for the wrong reason--I'd thought at the time that if I let her go, I'd be kicking myself over "what ifs." Bah. I'm a very slow learner sometimes. Didn't help much that the best job I applied for rejected me on the grounds that it would be unfair to their other employess for me to have one weekend a month off to serve my reserve obligation (I hate Sears to this day).
So, I end up assigned to a squadron assigned to a carrier, but I'm in LA, and the carrier is off the coast of South America. So, I fly to the Philippines to, you guessed it, wait for my ship to come in.
The cruise was...eventful. One guy got blown off the flight deck by jet exhaust, they never even found his body. Less than a week out of the Philippines, another succumbs to some tropical illness they think he got from a bug bite. On the way to the Gulf (Iran was threatening to blockade it at the time, stopping iol shipments), we had a major fire in the #2 MMR--it burned for 8 hours. At one point, they were evacuating people to the flight deck in preparation for getting them off this ship. At another point, I was several decks below the waterline on a hose team. Six people died of smoke inhalation, trapped in a berthing compartment. Lost a friend a while after that, when he fall off a ladder on the hangar deck.
I managed to get in trouble anyway. Post cruise, I'm back on reserve duty, and knocking around low-paying jobs in Hanford, CA. "Honey, I'm pregnant." That and 21 consecutive days of 110+ temps convince he to head back to LA to look for a real job.

So, back to LA (well, Anaheim, anyway).
Got yet another delivery job, though this one paid pretty well. Working for a company that distributed industrial electrical supplies, my territory was pretty much everything between Simi Valley, San Bernadino, and San Ysidro. Was boring and sometimes labor intensive (some of that crap is heavy!), but I became one hell of a good driver in the process. Got fired from that job, but the guy who fired me later got fired himself for firing so damn many good employees.
Ended up at a place that did maintenance and PCB decontamination on high voltage transformers. Worked mostly on military bases at oil refineries. One April morning, while painting a transformer we'd previously done repairs and decontamination on, a co-worker got too close to a capacitor mounted on the wall, and it discharged into his butt. The room was filled with vapors (mostly xylene) which exploded in this huge fireball. Killed power to half of the secure area of Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Lights, sirens, blood, millions of investigators asking billions of questions.... The next day, I'm up at like 3am, and drive from Anaheim to Monterey and back to pick up a transformer for repair. Get home at like 4am, fall into bed. About 9:30, the wife pokes me in the ribs, "I'm in labor." 12 hours or so later, my daughter is born! Huzzah! She's beautiful! But those three days seemed like one really freaking long one.
More jobs, but still doing the same gig, just for different companies. I'm starting to write songs now, and have also gone back to writing short stories, something I'd wanted to do like forever.
Things are not going well with the wife, she's become a bad alcoholic, and has taken to saying things like "I'm not a good parent, and I'm okay with that, because I just wasn't meant to be a parent." Ugh.
So by now I've fallen in with the local cable company, mostly because I'd learned how to operate a bucket truck when I was doing transformer stuff. And now the wife is working swing shift, and starting and ending each day wiht all the beer she can consume. I've pretty much become a single parent.
I picked up a secondhand electric guitar, and start jamming and writing songs with a guy I met through an old friend from HS, the two of them are building a recording studio, which became known as Low Ceiling Audio (it might even still be there). Dreams of musicianship ensue once again.
Damn. Woulldn't you know it, that didn't work out either. Old friend gets all weird, and I get pushed out of the studio project, though the other guy and I do some more stuff together--we write a couple screenplays.
I also picked up a 4 track and a 16 bit drum machine around then, and started working on recording stuff entirely on my own.
So, my marriage is pretty much disintegrated. But, silly me, I'd made this promise to myself, growing up without a father in my life, that if I had children, they'd never grow up without a father. This is sucking a lot.
We make friends with a cuple that lived in the next apartment, and one day I'm sitting in my living room, smo...er, drinking a beer with her, and suddenly it hits me--OMFG, she's the girl I saw in this weird vision I had when I was hypnotized back in HS!!!!!!eleven!!

(It was a hypnotist that hypnotized me. She was also an English teacher. Oh yeah, and people called her a witch. NO comment on the drinking thing, but I'll bet Hyper's stories are better. Anyway.)
Moving on.
Messy, messy divorce. Bitter custody battle, which I do not fare well in. Oh, yeah, and the new wife to be has two sons already, aged 4 and 1, both of whom I've fallen in love with.
Stormy relationship, but the good parts a far and away the best things I've ever experienced in my life; I just become more and more determined to stay with this woman, and I can be a stubborn S.O.B.
Unemployment strikes again, and now the wife to be is pregnant! What to do, what to do....
Well, employment has always sucked in the bizarre little burg of Porterville, so I head to WA, leaving the woman and kids behind.
I get lucky (by my standards), and get in with a contractor firm that's working on rebuilding the cable tv systems in Seattle. Good money, and all the work I can eat. February of '94, my son is born! Huzzah again! Wow, he looks just like me--like carbon copy, can't tell the childhood pics apart.
Come summer, I get a monster UHaul truck and move the woman and kids up to Kent, WA, and we get married.
(oh yeah, since you asked, somehwere in there I'd gotten a tattoo of a vampire bite on my neck. )
Keep doing the contractor thing, though with different companies. Making good money--paid for production, most days I can bring home $150, but some days it's more like 3 or 4 times that.
Sadly, the marriage falls apart after about a year and a half, and the wife and kids move to Tacoma. 
I still get to see them every weekend (later becomign every other weekend for everyone's convenience), and this is like the model of amicable divorces. Though I still pine for her, the greatest love I have ever known.
Somehow, the seemingly endless cable rebuild ends. So, being ever multi-talented, I start a very brief career installing water heaters! The work sucks. The hours sucks. Hey, the pay sucks too, let's go do something else.
Back to cable tv, only this time with a system--TCI. The pay's not even close, but the work is guaranteed, so I'll live with it, I figure. Then one fine day, I'm drivng my little cable truck down the road, only I drive it right into somebody else's car. Big back owie. Lotsa doctors and therapy and hey, let's take pictures, too. Umm, what's that in this picture? Oooh, it's a tumor (schwannoma), growing right on the nerve sheath very close to my spine. Cut the bastard out!

Anyway, between that, the long and colorful history of major back injuries, and throw in degenerrative disc disease, and it looks like our hero may be down for the count. But wait, there's more! Let's take the lifelong history of depression, add in enough manic episodes to make it evident that it's bipolar disorder, and throw in some psychotic features just for fun! Now how much would you pay? *snicker*

Hehe, yeah, I do tend to go on, don't I?
Where are we again? Oh yeah, spring of '98.
So, whilst I'm having my meltdown, now actually in Seattle, which is where I'd been aiming to start with (ended up in Leschi, actually, gorgeous view of Lake Washington), the love of my life breaks up with the guy she'd been with, and moves to a place just down the road.
She rejoins the workforce, and I become semi-live in daycare. That was pretty tortuous, as we were neither really together nor apart. But, I keep on trucking happy to get so much time with the boys, and glad of any time I get with her. This was sort of my initiation period to househusbandry. Plus, I have my bros back at the cool bachelor pad in Leschi, and the...er, garden to keep me going when things get tough.
Well, they got tougher, of course. She moved back to Cali in '99. Thus begins a major period of creative productivity for me--I record about an album's worth of new songs in a few months, breaking what for me is very new creative ground. I'm still a bit surprised how versatile my little 4 track is. I finish a few old short stories, and start on what would be an effing great novel if I ever get around to finishing it (I've even had a couple people who've only read the first chapter tell me I really need to shop it around for a film deal; it is far and away my best work).
I melt down a bit further, and now I'm on so freaking many meds I mostly just sleep. And a generous amount of tequila to that mix, and you get the observation zell made about holding my hiar that one night at satansmurf's.
I worked for a bit at persuing an A+ cert, but I just couldn't stay focused enough to have any clue what I was doing. Around then Social Security kicked in, making it possible for me to actually support myself, after a fashion.
By then, my love had moved back to WA again, though she was back with that dude she'd moved out no before. At least I got to see the boys again.
That was pretty much how things remained until September of '03, when the selfsame woman of my dreams and I got back together. We found a nice little place in Ruston, right by the entrance to the Point Defiance Zoo. We plan on remarrying, but have yet to set a date; we're trying to arrange it so we can go down to Medford, so her grandparents can be there.
My wife (I call her that most times as it's easier than explaining all of this) has taken up the bass, and my youngest son (he's 11 now) has a natural gift for the drums; I can play guitar pretty well by now, and have finally admitted I can sing pretty damn well also,plus my 14 year old is learning guitar--so we're gonna make us a band, man!
My daughter (egad, she's gonna be 20 next month!) is still in southern California, but she's got some funds saved up and is workign on making that more so she can move up here, at which point we'll have a new singer (or a second one, at least).
My other son (18 in 6 days) is living with his biological father in San Francisco, but plans on moving up here as well to attend college; it's gonna be a pretty full house.
And now, as Paul Harvey would say, you know the rest of the story.
(Wow, can't believe I left this out of part one, events that made my mother the loon she is today: By the time I was 5, I'd fractured my skull 5 times. During the time I was five, despite having all the immunizations, I managed to get mumps, measles, whooping cough, german measles, chicken pox and scarlet fever; all during the space of that one year. And since that was a lot to cram into a single year, I had chicken pox and scarlet fever at the same time, how efficient is that? Oh, wait, maybe those were things that led to me being the loon I am today. )
Actually, that was the Listos version....

Ah ozy, 1300 east olive. new high school down there now, 1700 block-ish. and they changed that crappy road w/those 2 near 90 degree turns by the cemetary. Now it's just a nice curve. I guess that's all that's changed
