IC - A Friar Falling

Moved from DAoC Percival for History Preservation
Predian awoke violently from his sleep, gasping for air. His lungs fought to fill with the air around him, but would not. He rolled himself over and muffled his coughs with the pillow beneath him, trying to shield his sleeping love from the noise.
He tilted his head to the left to check on her, still concealing his powerful cough. Thrennoadae did not stir, she lay peaceful sprawled on her back, half uncovered by blankets.
Unable to contain his cough he rose from the bed, sliding his feet softly to the floor, still holding the pillow to his mouth. He pushed with his legs and stood from the bed, but to his surprise the strength in his legs had gone from him and he nearly fell forward. Quickly, he supported himself with the nearest wall, and using his full body, forced himself upright.
Slowly some strength returned to his legs and he was able to make his way from the bedroom down the stairs, ever careful to not disturb Thrennoadae. He made his way outside of the house and walked toward the back of the lovely garden. Thrennoadae had done a perfect job here, and he stopped to quickly admire her work. Rylestone had become his home, but only because of Thrennoadae.
His legs ached as he walked and his body convulsed fiercely with each cough. This was the worst attack he had felt, and they were becoming more frequent. He made his way down the hill from their garden, to the river bank. He set down the pillow and allowed stopped the attempts to slow his cough. It became more and more violent, and he nearly choked as blood rushed up from his lungs. He spit it into the river, but the coughs did not stop.
Air was in short supply, unable to breathe in between coughs, Predian eventually passed out, his aching body collapsed face down at the edge of the river. He awoke an hour later, the coughing had stopped and the strength in his body had returned. He still ached. He looked around him, to make sure he had gone unnoticed. To his relief, he had. He couldn’t let her know, he thought to himself.
It hadn’t yet been a year since his love’s daughter had passed on, and Predian knew in his heart that he was suffering the same ailment. He was weakening slowly, the coughing fits grew more frequent and he was shedding more blood through illness than battle. But he could not let Thrennoadae know. He could not put her through loss again. If he could not fight through this illness, he’d have to find another way.
In fact, Predian had told no one. When coughs overtook him in the battle field he would blame it on a poorly placed enemy hammer. In moments of weakness he would claim an enemy spell. He had been careful, but it was becoming harder. Eventually someone would find out, he knew this, but he felt there was no other choice.
He rose from the river bed and made his way back to the house. He slid back in bed next to the still sleeping Thrennoadae. He had not realized he’d left his pillow behind. He curled up around her, his arm draped across her, and attempted to sleep.

Wolfsbane was restless.
With many things on his mind lately, he decided to take a slow ride through the neighborhoods surrounding his guildhall. Not really paying attention to where he was going, he soon found himself near the house of an old friend, and now old friends.
But something was different.
As he passed the house on his black warhorse, Wolfsbane heard the sounds of coughing and movement. Quickly moving the horse to the surrounding wood, he watched as Predian collapsed into the water.
Wolfsbane lept off his horse and ran to him, but the friar had passed out. Moving quickly, Wolfsbane moved his head out of the water and pressed some whiskey into his lips. Although the friar did not wake, he subconsciously drank the alcohol.
"That should make ye feel a little better, mate.... ye know I'll always be here for ye."
Shooting the unconscious friar a puzzled look, Wolfsbane remounted his horse and continued his ride.

The morning sunlight broke through their upstairs window, and landed in a beam of light right against her closed eyes. With a groan, she flopped over, bumping her hand hard against the headboard. Wincing and muttering a soft curse, she looked for Predian but he’d already arisen. Sighing softly, she slipped from bed and pulled on a silken robe. She began to make the bed as she did every morning, but oddly, Predian’s pillow was missing.
“Well, bugger that, what did he do, eat it?†She looked under the bed, behind the headboard, even shook out every blanket, but still she could not find it. Her forehead narrowed as she was deeply puzzled. Shrugging her shoulders, she went downstairs and again sighed as Predian had left already for his morning walk. But their forge was already stoked up, perhaps Rharan had been by and crafted a bit. She smiled as she thought of their home and guildmates, already the missing pillow an afterthought.
Pulling some bread from the cupboard, she made herself a few slices of toast, then wandered outside to admire the garden. The small plants she’d so carefully planted were peeking up, soaking in the morning sun. She took a seat in the swing, and admired the sparkling river as she munched on the bread with its sweet-honey butter. A crunch of a footstep behind her, and she turned to see Kaidric approaching.
Her normal warm smile for her brother-in-law was a bit reserved, he’d been acting strangely as of late. He’d taken a new direction in his path of the Church, and sometimes Thrennoadae worried for him.
Just the other day, in the depths of Darkness Falls, the sheer glee and fire in his eyes at the power of the smite he wielded nearly frightened her. She’d watched as he trod the hand of a fallen norseman, as if it was nothing more than a beetle to be squashed. But today, he was just her brother-in-law, and a warm smile touched his lips as he saw her sitting there.
“Yer up early,†she said as he got closer.
“Never been one to sleep late, sister,†came his reply.
She’d never felt uncomfortable around him before, he’d never so much as given her one of the looks she was accustomed to from men. But today, his eyes wandered a bit down the front of her robe, where it had fallen open just slightly to reveal the swell of her breasts. She waited for the flush and the embarrassment to rise to his cheeks, but instead, a slight smile curled his lip upwards, and his gaze remained on her. Scowling softly, she pulled closed the fabric of her robe, and turned a bit back towards the river, her own cheeks blushing.
“Pred has gone on his morning walk already, iffen yer looking fer him…†she finally said, breaking the awkward silence. She turned to look at Kaidric after a moment of silence, but he was already gone.

She’d questioned him playfully later that day about the missing pillow, and she’d failed to notice his hint of nervousness as he finally explained he’d done a bit of crafting and forgotten it at the riverbank. They’d been closer the last few days, and she smiled as she thought of how often he’d pulled her close for an unexpected kiss. Their lives were becoming more and more wonderful together with every passing day, and her thoughts drifted to the future often. Still no date had been set for the ceremony, but there was an unrushed feeling to it. They were happy to be together.
Lately, she’d even let her mind wander to the far future, and their hopes to have another child together. Predian wasn’t getting any younger, and neither was she for that matter. Leaning back against the wooden swing, she watched the river dance in its banks as she daydreamed about another child in their life. Caerenn’s loss hurt them both deeply, its what pulled them apart the first time. A frown crossed her brow as she thought about a possible future, another child. Another chance at loss, and what would that do to them this time?
They’d both grown, pushed through their fears and doubts, and come back together. Was it strong enough to live through such a deep and horrible pain again?
(just sorta an interlude.. really need Pred's next part first..)

<Writers block is the suck! Here's a small piece>
Days passed and Predian felt slightly improved. He fought with his friends and allies in the typical places, spent time with his wife and his brothers and enjoyed the reprieve from pain. Still, while the coughing and pain had faded, weakness was setting in. Although he disguised it well, even swinging his staff was a tiring chore.
The weakness worried Predian more than the pain. Pain he was used to, could cope with, ignore. Weakness, however, was frightening. After an internal debate, he decided it was time to seek help. When his cherished stepdaughter had fallen ill, both Predian and Thrennoadae used all of their powers in a failed attempt to heal her. None in the church were more powerful than Thrennoadae, and her powers had not even slowed her daughter’s death.
Predian would have to consider alternate means of a cure. If the church had failed, perhaps the scholars of the academy would have better luck. With a reserved hope in his heart, he set off to Lethantis to seek answers.

Landric hurried across the road and up Thrennoadae's front steps, pausing as always to admire the lion sculptures that guarded the entrance. He set the Book of Vows down and off to the side, the linen bookmark marking yet another passage for the lady to consider -- this one he'd found in the Highlands and it had just enough nature references that it just might work for her. Landric stood up and smiled.
He turned and hopped off the stoop with one motion, bumping right into -- of all people -- Predian's brother, who had just come running around the garden corner. Landric never gave much thought to Predian's brother, except on those occasions when their paths crossed.
The two clerics backed up and eyed each other for a second.
"Good day to you, Kaidric" said Landric.
"Landric" said Kaidric with a slight bow of his head.
There was an awkward pause as Landric had the usual "Oh my God how he has changed" thoughts which drowned out all attempts to think of something polite to say. When he realized how long the pause had become, Landric cleared his throat and said "Well" as he started to cast spells upon Kaidric, calling down the Archangel's Power and Dexterity and Holy Guard upon him.
Before the aura of his final cast had faded, Landric realized that he'd probably not done the right thing. He tried to fix things by blurting out "You'll smite faster now!" which sounded better in his head than it did out loud.
Landric just gave up, blurting out "I think I'm late!" as he ran across the path in a beeline to his front door, practically breaking it down in an effort to get inside quickly.

(Posted as conceived by both Pred & I)
***
“OCH! That hurt.. bugger it,†came the growl from the cleric as a stubborn bit of wire sunk into her thumb. Grumbling to herself, she pulled the offended digit up, and sucked on it, tasting a hint of blood. With a muttered oath, she kicked away the chain, letting it land on the other bench. All about her, bits of metal, wire and leather pieces were strewn as she was practicing her skills in armor crafting. Pushing a few stray locks of hair back behind her ears, she rubbed her thumb against her old blouse, sighing as yet another stain was added to the material. “Good thing I ne’er wear this anywhere.†She chuckled as she poked her fingers through the holes in the kilt.
Pulling a piece back to her lap, she brought out the heavy iron pliers and started to work on the chain links when she heard the knock at the door. “Come in,†she called out, eyes intent on the sleeves. She could see the door open and shut, and a pair of booted feet in the corner of her eye as she said, “Just ha’e a seat hon, be with ye in a moment.†The feet moved over, and then she heard Kaidric’s voice.
“Hello sister.â€
A soft chill set into her into her spine, grasping hold of her. The flesh of her shoulders crept as she lifted her gaze up to meet his. “Hello Kaidric,†she forced out. His dark brown eyes were not waiting for hers though, as they shifted up and down her figure under its mismatched clothing. She resisted the urge to cross her arms over her chest as she added, “What is it ye need?â€
“My armor needs repaired, I was hoping you could help.â€
“Aye, I can do that.. Just remo’e it and put it there on the bench. I’ll.. um.. call ye ta come get it when its done…†She knew she didn’t want him lingering around, not the way he’d been acting lately.
“No, that’s alright. I can wait.â€
Inwardly she shivered, and yet outwardly she forced herself to nod. Laying down the bit she was working on, she moved over to her supply cabinet, and started to pull out the bits of arcanium she’d need to repair his armor. Behind her, she could hear him moving and shifting as he shed the heavy chain.
“You know, my brother is a lucky man, twice over in fact,†he said, his eyes roaming her backside. The thin, well-worn kilt barely hid the curves of her hips as she bent and moved gathering the items she needed.
His tunic clinked to the ground, and he shifted to unfasten the arms, his eyes still roaming her figure. The long golden hair was bound up in a quick braid, and his fingers suddenly itched to wrap themselves in it.
“Bah.. Pred and I are in lo’e.. hes the lo’e o’ m’life,†she said softly, hoping to guide the conversation to her husband to be.
“Yes, but you are a prize worthy of a better man than my brother,†he replied, and another bit of chain dropped to the floor. Her fear grew as she fumbled a bit with the items, causing one container to spill. Long thin wires went scattered across the shelf as she tried to pick them up. The sound of more chain hitting the floor behind her thudded through her with each impact on the wooden boards of the floor.
“Kaidric, perhaps this is a bad time…†she began to say, as she turned around. A scream froze in her throat as he stood directly in front of her. One of his hands lifted, catching her neck in his powerful grip, closing off her air before the sound could even hiss forth. The items in her hands tumbled carelessly to the floor as he pushed her back against the shelf.
“No sister, now is the perfect time,†and his other hand lifted. Her blue eyes grew wide with fright as he clasped the soft material of her blouse, and ripped it hard with downwards, exposing the soft fullness of her breasts. She began to thrash at him, as he leaned in, and his lips closed about her nipple.
With a scream, she sat bolt upright in bed, sweat pouring off her as she struggled for air. Hands flailing as she pushed and shoved at Predian as he woke and tried to comfort her from her nightmare. With shaking, shuddering sobs, she finally realized it was a horrible dream, a nightmare and she clung to Predian as he cooed softly to her, rocking her gently. He had no inkling of what the dream was, only that it had frightened her terribly. Eventually, she drifted back to sleep, held tightly by her love as he kissed her temple softly. The dream faded from her memory, as many dreams did.
**
Several houses away, tucked neatly back against the hill of Rylestone, Rhalm woke with a start as she heard Kaidric thrashing upstairs in his bed. She crept to the stairs, with thoughts of waking him out of it, when she heard his moans.
Unable to make out what he said, she slipped up the stairs, and found him thrashing and moaning to himself, naked except for the bedsheets that were twisted about his thighs.
Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and she moved back to her bed, firmly bolting the door of her bedchamber as she went.

She was kneeling in the garden, wearing just an old smock, hair haphazardly thrown into some braid and wrapped up out of her way. A smudge of dirt smeared one cheek yet she was humming happily to herself as she was content in replanting a particular flower bed. “Twas too much yellow,†she muttered to herself again, bringing out a few blue and violet pansies to add to the design she was working. It was the shape of a Celtic knot, and she was pleased with how it was coming.
“Hello Threnn.â€
She turned and grinned over at Redhame, gesturing with her shoulder to the nearby bench.
“Morning there,†Threnn replied, “How are ye taday?â€
“I’m fine, I suppose.â€
Threnn nodded and continued her planting, knowing Red would speak as she wanted. The crotchety friar had warmed up to her a lot over the past weeks, and she truly was enjoying her company, though it could be frustrating at times. She was a lover of perfection, as much as Threnn herself was. And perfection was not an easy master.
“I hate to be the one to tell you this,†she suddenly blurted out to Threnn. The words caught her, and she turned to gaze up at Redhame. “But there is something wrong with Predian.â€
“What… do ye mean?â€
“You don’t hear him wheezing for breath during each fight, even though Milric’s chanting away for our endurance. You don’t see him flinch and try to hide it. You don’t notice the weakness of his blows and the pain etched on his face. I can’t help but see it, and there is something wrong.â€
Threnn grew silent, dirt covered fingers falling to her knees. What could be wrong? Her heart began to hammer in her chest, full of worry.
Redhame sighed a bit, and leaned over to comfort Threnn, “I’m sorry Threnn, but maybe whatever it is can be fixed.†But the cleric’s mind was already distracted with what it might be, what could be wrong, and how she would cure it.
“Aye.. I think I need ta go clean up.. Thank ye Red… thank ye..†she threw the words over her shoulder as she wandered up her porch and into the house. Redhame nodded, understanding and more than a bit concerned herself. She glanced at Threnn’s unfinished work, the flowers that would wilt and die if left in their current state and grumbled to herself.
“Silly woman,†she muttered as she knelt and carefully moved the plants to a bit of shade so they’d keep. She stared at the bed a few moments longer, then looked at the house Threnn had disappeared into. With a loud ‘hmph’ she knelt down and finished out the pattern the cleric had been working on, and added a touch of her own. The brilliant red pansies didn’t look TOO out of place. Dusting off her hands on her thighs, she walked back to her own home in Rylestone, chuckling to herself.

"I'm sorry Predian, we cannot help you." The Archwizard stated matter of factly.
"There must be something. My family has extensive resources; I can get anything that is needed." Quickly losing hope in a cure, the friar replied.
"Predian, our resources here at Lethantis are vast, but they only cover the legitamate arts; Sorcerery, Wizardry and the ancient magics. The ailment you have is not of nature, which is why your druidic wife could not cure it of her daughter. It is not within the knowledge of the church or of true magic. It's dark. Not covered by our texts here."
"It must be covered somewhere. You are telling me it cannot be beaten, but even a fierce savage has weakness."
"It's not covered by our texts here...but there are other sources of magic. Dark magic, such that is wielded by shaman; or closer to home, by cabalists. You have one such cabalist in your own guild, a twisted soul by the name of Dartel."
The wizard handed Predian a slip of paper, with the name Dartel written on it as well as a few points of reference for the cabalist to research. Predian gladly took it and headed back to his guild hall, in search of Dartel.
He did not have a strong relationship with the odd Cabalist. Predian never trusted dark magics and always suspected the worst of Dartel. Still, he was an ally and fought for Albion, so in that he was redeemed.
After a few hours journey, Predian arrived. Only Rharan, his trusted officer and noble paladin, occupied the hall. Word was spreading that Norse forces had penetrated Hadrian's Wall. Without so much as a word, Predian and Rharan nodded at each other and headed out to try to help.
The trip from Sauvage to Hadrian's was a treacherous one, but one intensely familiar to the two friends. They took a route east of Boldiam to avoid roaming bands of enemies. As they neared Erasleigh, Predian turned to Rharan, "Rharan..." His voice faded. His body slowly stumbled forward, dropping his weight onto his knees, then falling face forward into the ground, his body was no longer moving.

Seeing Predian drop, Rharan crouched, raising his shield, and scanned the horizon quickly for enemy archers or mages... but there was nothing here.
Letting his guard down a bit, he knelt to check on his leader. "Predian? Sir?" There was no sign of life from the friar other than his slow breathing. Sheathing his sword, Rharan began softly chanting the Latin prayers he'd learned from Lord Prydwen so many years ago, asking their Lord for strength and wholeness of body. He felt the familiar gift of healing power build within him, but couldn't feel the power aiding Predian.
A couple of wheezing coughs shook through the friar's prone form. Rharan tried to help Predian sit up, thinking to aid him to catch a good breath. The man was burning to the touch. There was a bit of blood around his mouth, brought up by his coughing. Some sort of swelling around his neck. And his skin... nearly the pallor of a zombie's, other than the dark splotches that seemed to be forming as he watched.
"Dear Lord..." Rharan glanced up the hill towards Erasleigh, still flying Ascension's banner. He lifted Predian up, shocked by how light the man was... how frail. Lord be with you, my friend... how long have you been hiding this?, the paladin wondered. You couldn't have lost so much strength overnight...
Running up the hill to the fortress, he spoke softly to his liege, not sure if the man could hear him or not. "Predian... hold on, sir..."
He caught the attention of one of the guards. "You! You've a cleric on duty this morn?"
The guard shook his head, glancing with concern at the body in Rharan's arms. "Nay, nor a friar..."
Damnation, what incompetence does our money buy here?, Rharan thought to himself. He took a deep breath, opened his mouth to question -- then glanced down as Predian shivered suddenly. No... No time for this, Rharan. "A minstrel, then, at least?"
The guard shook his head again, while a couple of the other hired defenders noted the commotion and came over. "Just the hastener, sir..." He paused, getting a good look at Predian's face. "Is.. is that..." The guard looked up at Rharan with concern.
Glancing up at the guard as he knelt and gently lay his friend down, he snapped off an order. "Form an honor guard. Now. We're taking him to Sauvage." Not waiting for a response, Rharan removed his cloak, and carefully wrapped it around Predian, paying no attention to the guards as they assembled.

The Lord's blessings were upon them in their journey, it seemed. The travel across the Pennines was uneventful, and the small force, moving double-time at Rharan's insistence, was soon within sight of Castle Sauvage. The paladin dismissed the guards, and dashed down the hill and inside the fortress, still clutching his guild leader tightly.
"Thank you, my Lord," he shouted, as he turned the corner and saw Master Visur and his assistance taking their places for the portal ceremony. Quickly, Rharan paid for passage to Rylestone, and trotted to the platform, straight for the head wizard. "Go now, sir, he cannot wait," Rharan told Visur.
Dark, deeply tired eyes looked back at him. "We cannot proceed yet, we're not scheduled to cast for another five minutes." he replied. His eyes dropped to Rharan's arms, and widened at the sight of Predian.
"That..." Visur looked back up at Rharan. "... is Predian?"
Rharan nodded, and replied urgently, his eyes pleading. "He is deathly ill. I need to get him to Rylestone... to Thrennoadae."
At the name of his love, Predian shifted. Both men looked down, to see his eyes flutter open for an instant. The friar's spoke raspingly, "Threnn... so sorry..." His body shook with another fit of coughing before he slipped back into unconsciousness.
Visur paused for an instant before looking up at Rharan. "Predian Cross has done more for Albion than any fifty men who will arrive in the next five minutes. Step back, please."
Moments later, Rharan blinked, as his eyes recovered from the intense flash of light. His eyes focused on the whitewashed walls of Predian and Threnn's home, just across the village commons. "Threnn!" he screamed, as he dashed across the field, and burst through her front door.

She’d been doing a bit of light reading, just something to pass a lazy day while Predian was out in the frontiers. She’d not felt like going out for some reason or another, enjoying a bit of quiet time amidst all their wedding preparations. Without a bit of warning, she heard her door crash in, and she turned fearing the worst. Her first instinct was that it was Kaidric for some odd reason, but the reality was far worse.
“Rharan.. dear god.. what happened ta Predian..†her eyes fell immediately to the man he carried so closely and protectively.
“He collapsed Threnn.. on the frontiers. He is so pale, something is horribly wrong.†He laid him down on one of the benches. Threnn came over rapidly, beginning to incant soft prayers when she noticed a bit of paper fallen from his prone form. She ignored it for then, whispering prayer after prayer until her knees nearly buckled from a revelation.
“He has it.. Oh dear hea’ens.. he has what Caerenn had.. Redhame told me.. but I dinnae listen..â€
She slumped to the floor, and felt the paper under her fingers. Lifting it up for lack of anything else to concentrate on, she saw Dartel’s name, and a few more scribblings of something else.
“Dartel?†she murmured, and showed Rharan the paper.
“Maybe.. maybe he kent he was ill.. and was…â€
She paused, drawing herself together. She was not about to lose him, not again. “Rharan, pick him up, we are going ta Dartel ta see what this is, what he can do. Perhaps …we’ve a chance ta sa’e him.â€

Dartel was startled from his readings as their came a loud rapping at his door, the sound of a plate gauntlet crashing against the wood nearly causing him to jump from his chair. He called out a bit annoyed, "Who is it?" He was a bit surprised to hear Thrennoadae’s voice.
"Open the door Dartel, please," Thrennoadae screamed, a sense of urgency and desperation in her voice.Dartel rose quickly and rushed over, pulling the heavy wooden door open as Thrennoadae came rushing quickly inside. Dartel eyed Thrennoadae curiously as she came upon him quickly, grabbing his shoulders roughly as she pushed him back a few steps. His gaze went past the half-crazed stare Thrennoadae was giving him to the door as Rharan burst in holding a completely limp Predian in his arms, a concerned look upon his normally stoic face.
Thrennoadae shook Dartel’s shoulders, "Ye gotta help him, yer the last hope he’s got." Dartel furrowed up his brow and arched his head to the side as he studied Thrennoadae’s face and the situation.
"What in the hell are you babbling about woman?" Thrennoadae pointed over at Predian as Rharan laid him down on Dartel’s small bed in the corner of the room, "He’s... he’s got what," Thrennoadae said in a soft voice as she began to sob lightly, "what killed our little girl."
Dartel reached out to embrace Thrennoadae, pulling her close to him as he whispered softly to her, "I’m truly sorry, but I am no healer Threnn." Thrennoadae pushed back from his embrace, her blue eyes flaring violently at Dartel as she whispered through clenched teeth, "I’ve nae forgotten what ye did ta me, keep yer damn hands off me." She reached her hand up to her face, brushing away a few rebellious strands of hair as she sucked in a deep breath, regaining a measure of her composure.
"Nae a thing the Church or the Academy can do will aid him Dartel," she said as she snorted with the last of her sentence, "but there are some that claim ye can. There was this note.. in Predian’s pocket with yer name on it.. tis why we are here." Rharan finished muttering a prayer over his dear friend’s unconscious form and made the sign of the cross over him before rising to join the discussion at Thrennoadae’s side.
"Threnn, there has to be a way that will not taint -" he started, before she cut him off, and pleaded with the cabalist. "Please Dartel, ye’ve gotta try fer his sake, fer mine..."
Dartel nodded solemnly and brought his hand up to his face, lightly stroking his chin as he thought a moment, his gaze far off as he thought back through many of his darkest teachings and findings throughout the years. His eyes lit up a moment and a slight smile took to curling up the corners of his mouth.
Thrennoadae watched Dartel with an eager expression, hoping beyond anything Dartel would have a revelation. Rharan turned, and went back to kneel beside the fallen friar.
"Aye?" Thrennoadae blurted out, "Ye’ve thought o’ something?"
Dartel nodded, but a foreboding expression came over him, "I have, but I warn you that the methods are untried, the results varied and the price of failure, deadly. I can promise nothing, but I thirst for the chance to toy with such powerful magics."
Thrennoadae nodded excitedly, "Anything, any cost to cure him Dartel, ye hear me, any cost." Dartel nodded and smiled wickedly, relishing the thought of toying with such dark and powerful spells, knowing all before him were rendered helpless as he held such power. He bade her to sit and be quiet as he perused through many of his oldest and darkest tomes. Rharan walked over to her, and Dartel overheard their voices as they rose above their hushed whispers.
"I do not trust him, Threnn."
"I dun ken what ta think Rharan, but Dartel is the last hope en I will nae lose Pred again, any cost...any cost."
"And if the cost is Predian's soul?"
She looked away from the paladin, did not answer. Rharan reached down, took her hand, and sat quietly beside her.
Dartel read for the better part of an hour, jotting down notes and marking passages in various tomes as he mumbled to himself. Thrennoadae, her patience far surpassed, strode over and planted the heels of her hands forcefully upon the table where Dartel had several tomes strewn about as she eyed him expectantly, "Well?"
Dartel gazed up at her slowly, his eyes narrowed evilly as he glared at her. "Well? Well you ask? I will tell you then. He is likely dead, there is but one thing I can begin to think of. We must acquire a few things along with a Cleric that is willing to possibly give their life for his." Thrennoadae blanched as Dartel’s words hit her harder than any foes weapon could, nearly knocking her backwards with their weight.
Rharan rose up and rushed over. "Damn you Dartel! Have a bit of sympathy."
Dartel arched his brow and sneered, "Sympathy? You would have me tell her falsehoods and let her believe I will deliver him back easily?" Rharan swallowed hard and glared at Dartel, but remained silent as he patted Thrennoadae on the back.
Thrennoadae gazed at Dartel for a time before speaking, "I will give my life for Predian, I am the Cleric ye seek. I will sa’e him."
Dartel scoffed, "You? Heathen.†He cursed, “You are neither a true Cleric nor a Druid. You lacked the power to save a child, much-less a grown man."
Thrennoadae’s face showed shock for a moment, then nothing, absolutely nothing as despair took her.
"Evil bastard." Rharan muttered as he started to guide Thrennoadae away from Dartel. Thrennoadae pulled away from Rharan and mumbled, "Kaidric, his brother might help." Rharan eyed Thrennoadae for a moment and nodded, "Surely, if anyone would aid him, he would."
Dartel rose up and stared at them both. "I will require a few other things as well." Rharan eased Thrennoadae into a chair and nearly shed a tear as he looked at the shell of what was once a feisty, proud woman. He gazed back at Dartel, "I will pay you back for your wickedness one day. Now, what is it you need for this deed." Dartel listed off a few things: the blood of the dragon, a piece of the flesh from the dreaded Legion, the lips of a succubus and explained how they must be ground in the Cauldron of Dagda with Thor’s Hammer.
Rharan’s eyes went wide as he shook his head, "I suppose the hand of God himself must do the grinding then?"
Dartel smirked wickedly, "You can call me God if you wish, but Dartel will do fine."
Rharan glared viciously. "Such blasphemous talk will end your days Dartel, take care they not fall on the wrong ears."
Dartel nodded slightly and went back to his books. "He can stay here if you like, and likely should so I can study him further." Dartel glanced at Thrennoadae, "She can stay as well, but bring another to care for her, as I will not be troubled with her."
Rharan let that shot at Thrennoadae pass as he walked over to speak with her. "I shall get our friends together Threnn. We shall accomplish this. For Predian. For you." Thrennoadae managed a slight smile as the two exchanged a quick hug. Rharan headed for the door, gripping the handle tightly as he looked back over her shoulder and shouted as he left, "Your life depends on her safety, Dartel."

Dartel started at a loud noise, and sat up quickly. It took him a moment to realize he'd fallen asleep in the midst of some research. The noise again - this time he recognized it as someone pounding on the door.
He glanced around... the first rays of light were coming in through the east windows. Predian was still on his bed, unmoving. And... yes, Threnn was still in the same chair where she'd sat all night. She glanced over at him, and nearly emotionlessly said "Answer it."
"What?" Dartel yelled towards the door. The door swung open, and Rharan stepped back in. His armor, usually kept meticulously clean and in shape, was nearly coated in dirt, blood, and some sort of vile bluish ichor. He stepped in a bit shakily, crossed
the room to Dartel's desk, and dropped a coarse canvas bag on the floor beside him. The bag hit the floor with a squishing sound, and the bluish fluid that stained the bottom of the canvas began to puddle on
the floor. "Succubus heads," he said to the cabalist shortly.
He dug through a bag on his hip for a minute, and pulled out a potion vial, filled with a thick reddish-brown liquid. "Golenstadt's blood. Thanks to
Nymh's new tactics. Don't waste it, I don't want to have to get more."
Turning away from Dartel, he knelt beside the chair where Threnn still sat. "Come on, Threnn. You need rest, you can't help him by letting yourself go."
The paladin guided her across the village commons to her home. He opened the door for her. "I need to go home for a while," he said wearily. "Sabreen's been up all night, Merthan's got a bit of colic. I'll find
folks to help with Legion soon. You.... get some food, some rest. I'll check on you in a few hours."

IC - A Friar Falling
|
She’d sat numbly in the chair the whole night through. Outside of her thoughts, she could hear Dartel and Rharan speaking, and heard Rharan leave. Dartel had glanced over at her, then gone back to his books. There at her side, still unconscious, still barely alive, was her Predian.
Yes, her Predian. Anyone could say what they liked about her, but when it came down to it, she would do anything in the world to save that man. She loved him unconditionally. He was her moon, her stars, her universe. And he was dying.
The soft sound of papers shuffling drew her attention to Dartel a moment, then it came back to her love. Gently, she shifted over, coming to sit on the bed next to him. A tear fell down her cheek, tracing its way across her flesh as she gazed at him. The pallor of his skin frightened her. The wheezing breaths that he took, each one sounding as if it were his last. She brushed her fingertips through his thick, silvering hair and bit back the sob that threatened to burst forth. Clasping his hand in hers, she brought it to her lips, kissing the heated skin gently before she began to speak to him.
“Predian, we’ll make it through this. We ha’e ta. We’ve nae gotten married again yet. I’ve heard o’ groom’s getting cold feet, but yer really taking it too far this time.†The soft laugh she tried to force out, hardly sounded a laugh, and swallowing hard, she continued. “We’ll beat this, ye and I. We’ll do anything and e’erything it takes ta cure ye. Dartel says he found something, it’ll work, it has ta.â€
She was rambling now, but she didn’t care. She spoke to him of memories, of anything that leapt into her mind. Recounting countless battles, or the banter they shared nightly with their friends as she listened to each deep, shuddering breath he drew. Inwardly, she feared each time that a pause whispered between breaths, and her voice would still until she heard the next rush of air into his blocked lungs.
“Ye ken, we wanted ta ha’e children Predian. Cannae ye see yer sons romping along in the grass with filthy little hands, bright blue eyes and nae a care in the world. Can ye feel the little fierce hugs as we tuck them inta bed at night. Or another daughter. This one with yer eyes. Calm, beautiful, kind with a smile that steal’s men’s hearts.â€
Hours passed, and her voice grew raspy, and Predian moved not but for the rise and fall of his chest. She bathed his face and neck with cool water, and her sense of helplessness grew. She couldn’t recall when she no longer had voice to speak, the tears closing her throat as she sat staring at him, willing him to live. As if her mere presence kept him alive. Her hand against his was the tether.
Sometime during the night, she must have passed out sitting there beside him. Dartel glanced over, and saw her folded against herself, nearly falling from the edge of the bed. With a roll of his eyes, the cabalist moved her to the chair, mumbling something about tending to women.
It was there that she awoke and sat, moments before Rharan’s return. She watched the exchange of items, still trying to comprehend everything in the cold morning light. It hit her, just as Rharan brought her to the door of her and Predian’s home.
"I need to go home for a while," he said wearily. "Sabreen's been up all night, Merthan's got a bit of colic. I'll find folks to help with Legion soon. You.... get some food, some rest. I'll check on you in a few hours."
And he was gone. Standing there on the stoop, her hand resting on the door handle she paused, her weary brain fumbling for answers. There was still something else to be done, and inherently, she knew she was the only one that could do it. Her gaze was drawn to the house sitting back against the hill. The tiny, yet elegant cottage that radiated wealth and fortune.
Rynnthorn’s cottage, but it was not that brother she sought. No, it was Kaidric.
Unconsciously, her hand went to her throat, and the memories of the dream flooded through her again. Brought back to her mind by his taunting words. She could hear him whispering, standing so closely behind her in Castle Sauvage.
“You wanted it, you must have, for you dreamt it. You enjoyed it.â€
The warmth of his breath against her ear brought back the nightmare in all its clarity and she shuddered again. She wanted to never see him again, but it was Predian’s life.
“Anything fer ye Predian.. I’d do anything,†she murmured softly as she pulled her fingers through her hair. Her hands smoothed at the wrinkles of her clothing as she walked slowly across the commons, and up the small incline to the cottage Kaidric and Rhalm shared. She glanced at the sun, just peeking over the hills, and hoped Kaidric was still home, though part of her wished there would be no answer.
She knocked loudly on the door, and waited.
Minutes later, she heard the latch pulled back, and the door opened to reveal the cleric. He was clad in only a pair of loose cotton breeches that draped across his hips. The soft red-gold of his hair was in a bit of disarray as he scrubbed his fingers through it, gazing at her with the eyes that could have been Predian’s. He was muscular, fit and would be attractive to nearly any female that would have seen him at that moment, but Thrennoadae fought the urge to retch.
“Yes sister?†he said, one eyebrow arching curiously. Fingernails rubbed at his chest as his bent arm rested against the open door.
“Its Predian… hes … hes dying..†she started, not even sure how to speak to him.
“Dying? And you can’t save him? I find that hard to believe.†He gazed at her, noting the lack of sleep, the fear in her eyes, as well as the loathing. It was the latter he thrived on.
“He has.. what killed Caerenn. There’s nae way ta sa’e him but one.. Dartel is working on a cure and .. and he needs…†her voice cracked, and she bit her bottom lip hard, nearly drawing blood.
“He needs a cleric willing ta gi’e his life fer Predian.â€
He chuckled, the bastard actually chuckled at her. “Sounds like that’s something you should be doing.†His eyes wandered her figure boldly, belittling the moment even farther.
She ignored it, and continued, trying to convince him the desperation of the moment, “I cannae.. being celt.. but ye.. ye are his brother…â€
“Half brother,†he interrupted her.
“Half brother.. but yer his family.. and yer a cleric.. Please.. Kaidric..â€
“You are asking me to give up my life for him? I have barely put aside my hatred of my family, and here you ask me to give up my life?â€
“Yer his only chance.. and its nae.. ye might nae die..†she was nearly in tears again, feeling the moment slipping. There was no one else, she knew that. It had to be Kaidric. She almost didn’t hear his next words.
“And what will you do, sister, to make it worth my life? What will you do to save his life?†His eyes undressed her, making her feel naked there on the stoop.
Deep breaths filled her lungs and tears stung her eyes as she murmured, “Anything. I would do anything fer Predian.â€
He stepped forward, and his large warm hand slide under her rumpled kilt till he cupped her firm backside. With a soft tug, he pulled her hard up against him. His neck bent, and his hot breath touched her ear as he whispered, “You know what it is that I want.â€
A moan escaped her lips as he released her, turned and walked back into the house. She hesitated moments, and forced down the bile that rose in her throat. Dimly, she saw him moving in the darkness of the house, waiting her answer. With tears in her eyes, and a silent prayer for Predian’s life, she stepped through the door.
Fingers lifted, and slowly began to unbutton her blouse as the door shut behind her, blocking her sins from the world’s eyes.

Rharan paused at the door to his home, carefully removed his armor, piece by piece, and laid it gently in the grass. Dressed now in a simple pair of linen breeches and an undershirt, he quietly opened the door to his home, listening intently.
He heard no squalling; she must have gotten their son to finally drift off. Moving as softly as he could, he entered the house, and saw his wife asleep in their bed, and the twins in their cribs. He was right, Merthan was sleeping. However, Cinae was starting to squirm... of course, he thought with a smile. She was the only one who'd gotten any sleep last night, and she seemed to have inherited her father's tendancies to wake early. And she was *never* still, it seemed - she wiggled constantly when she was awake. She'd be a real handful in a few months...
Softly, he picked his little girl up, and cuddled her close. She cooed softly, and those sparkling little eyes found his face. "G'morning, Princess," he whispered, and carried her with him as he crept down the stairs, got a bucket and brush, and stepped back outside to scrub the goo from his armor.
He stopped in surprise at the door... watched with disappointment, as Threnn shared a rather intimate-looking embrace with Kaidric, then stepped inside his home. Stood there a few moments, before turning back to his infant daughter.
"Don't grow up like her, princess... don't cheapen love so, just to get what you want..." He set her down to wiggle in the grass, smiled as she giggled.
After filling his bucket at the well, he set to work on his breastplate. As he did, he whispered a prayer for Predian's soul... and Thrennoadae's.

I want to know how they plan on pulling off the relic heist so they can mix this stuff. Won't the Middies just take them back while they are sleeping?
Also, don't you think Rharans group will bust ass to get DF open, but Mids will get it back right before they port in....lmao.

I am not sure about Predian but I would most assuredly rather die than live with that price attached. There is no question in my mind about that fact.

It is said that some clerics of Albion’s great church live in such fear that they cannot bring themselves to venture out of the heavily guarded fortresses that sit on the edge of the frontier. These clerics serve their realm by granting God’s enhancements and nothing more. They sway as if they were the living dead, shrouded by walls of safety, while their countrymen wage war.
Kaidric never understood these clerics. They were his brothers in the church, but he shared no common bond with them beyond title. He could not relate to them in any way, and yet there he stood, swaying from side to side, nearly still, nearly paralyzed, just like them.
He stood and stared at her. She was his prize and his undoing. Even as she slept the tears continued to run down her cold cheeks. He had taken from her everything that he wanted, and yet he was empty.
Kaidric, son of a servant and a noble, as a baby was hidden in a monastery to hide the shame of his family. His mother, murdered before he had ever known her. His father, dead before acknowledging his existence. He left that monastery after too many years, seeking vengeance for the wrongs done to him. Instead he found himself with two brothers and one was dying. Life had always been out of Kaidric’s control, whether he felt pain, sorrow, rage or joy, was always at the whim of others. He failed in helping his friend Rhalm. He failed in saving or avenging his mother’s death. He failed to have the childhood a boy was intended to. Everything: beyond his control. His rage and frustration had manifested in God’s power of smite, manifested into a power he enjoyed. He took pleasure in controlling life and death, but that power had consumed him. Controlling others became his passion. He had controlled Thrennaodae’s dreams, her fears and now her body. And in his hands also rested his half-brother’s life. A brother that had only shown him love and friendship.
And yet Kaidric stood still, empty. He had taken no pleasure from his horrendous act, and felt no remorse for it. Kaidric had found all the control he ever sought and he wanted no part of it.
His leg rose and moved forward, landing on the ground in front of him; a step. He took another with great difficulty, and more followed. The movements became easier as he crossed the wooded floor from the bed over to a nearby dresser. He slid open the top drawer of the ornate marble dresser and rummaged through its contents. He removed a shiny silver blade, about three inches in length and held it in his hand. He raised the blade into the air, letting the light from a nearby window reflect from it and shine into the cleric’s eyes.
He closed his other hand around the blade and squeezed tightly. With his first hand, he pulled the blade out from his clenched fist. He slowly opened that hand and watched for a moment as the blood trickled from it. He quietly chanted a spell, and watched as the wound closed. Still, he felt nothing.
He brought the knife with him to the far corner of the room, a shadowy place not touched by the light creeping through the windows. He sat down in that corner. “I do not wish to control my brother’s life†he said quietly to himself.
And as the sun took its place dominating the morning sky, a cleric awoke to the dampness of her own tears. A paladin buckled on his plate glove and set out to continue his quest. A cabalist shuffled tirelessly through papers and books. Kaidric sat in his dark corner, watching his own blood flow from his wrists……
And a friar lay perfectly still, with visions in his head of a little girl, calling to him, beckoning him to the light. A daughter calling for her father and it was time for him to join her….

A persistent dripping was tugging at her consciousness, bringing out of the place she was hiding in. Drip, drip, drip, continuing without stopping as she felt the tears drying on her cheeks and the memories of what she’d done oozing back into her thoughts. Her thighs were numb, her body felt used and unclean. The soft skin of her felt tight from the trickle of her tears.
She fought the sound, the clear, dark memories of the act she’d just committed. She tried to push them away but her eyelids parted and she saw him. Of course she’d see him first, it was inescapable, he was part of her life, her past, her … sins now forever. His naked body hid in a dark corner, bereft of light as the dripping sound continued.
Eyes narrowing as she pushed herself up, grimacing at the touch of the bed sheets against her flesh. She ached to bathe, to rid herself of the foul bargain she’d accepted when her eyes finally focused on her ‘lover’ and the deed he’d committed slammed into her awareness.
“Kaidric nae!†she shouted, propelling herself out of the bed and in a rush she crossed the floor.
Drip, drip, drip went his life’s essence against the unaccepting floorboards, the blood pooling in a growing red circle. His gaze slowly turned upwards to her tear-stained face, an almost half-smile touching his lips as the horror of his actions flooded through her.
Without hesitation or thought, her hands clamped down on his wrists, and she healed the injuries to his body, closing the wounds, restoring the loss of blood with the grace of God, the cleric’s prayers answered this time. As they knitted shut, ceasing the dripping, stemming the ebbing of his life, one hand lifted from his wrist and she drew it back and unleashed a violent slap against his cheek. Twice more she hit him, then unleashed her anger.
“How dare ye do that.. ye took what ye wanted, and then and then ye do THIS!? How dare ye, ye bloody bastard!â€

IC - A Friar Falling

((Written between Predian and I on the dialogue))
The blonde cleric knelt in front of her brother in law, now her lover, the man that held Predian’s life in his bloodstained hands. Her chest heaved as she grew angry with him for stealing from her all she held dear, and then throwing it away without a thought. The twin pools of blood nearly touched her knees, as she glared at him with her brilliant blue eyes.
Slowly, he spoke, his voice blank and lifeless, “I don't wish power over Predian's life. Let me die.†He began to reach for the knife he dropped earlier, eyes intent on nothing else.
“Its too late, ye've gotten that power whether ye want it or nae,†and her hand slapped away the knife. The cold, bloodied metal skittered across the floorboards to the other side of the room.
"I do not wish to feel so empty,†slowly he stood, and began to walk to the other side of the room. Casually he brushed past her, walking slowly towards the blade.
She lurched to her feet, and spit out at him, “Ye took me. Ye used me, and now ye dare ta feel empty? Ye owe Predian!†She raised her fists in the air and screamed out a harsh prayer, stunning Kaidric in mid stride.
Again, completely without emotion, “Let me die.â€
She began to plead with him, eyes filled with tears the anger in her would not let shed, “Ye owe me Kaidric Cross and ye owe yer brother. Iffen ye wish ta die, then die fer him. Let him li'e!"
"Why?" came the cold reply. “There is no meaning, no value in a person or a life. It can be given and taken so easily. We are nothing."
“Because he is e'ery good thing in this world ta me, he is m'entire destiny. I cannae li'e without him. Iffen ye let him die, then ye let me die as well." Her voice cracked, and her arms wrapped about her naked torso. The room seemed empty, the furniture faded to the outskirts of her vision. There was only her, Kaidric, and the knife that still was visible where it lay across the room.
"There is no purpose to saving Predian, or any other."
She screamed at him, “I dun care what ye think anymore. Tis nae about ye and yer lackluster life. We lo'ed ye Kaidric, we took ye in, we kept ye safe and now ye dun care?" Her voice lowered, and she forced out, “He would die fer ye.â€
Kaidric slowly turned to look at her, standing there still disheveled from their tryst. Her golden hair framed her lean body almost like a halo. Yet none of that touched him then. "You did no more for me than the monastery paid to care for me. Than the church paid to train me. I owe you for my mother's death? I owe you for being orphaned and discarded?"
"Listen ta yerself, and ye call yerself a cleric, a man o' God. Yer a wretched tiny man that gi'es nae a shyte fer himself or anyone else! He will die. He might already be dead. Whilst I lay in yer arms gi'ing ye what ye wanted, whilst I ga'e ye what is rightfully his… he lays dying. Ye are a bastard in e’ery sense o’ the word."
Slowly, Kaidric’s gaze lifted upwards, and he met hers for the first time. She returned the gaze, her blue eyes full of tears, unshed and glimmering against her eyes.
"And if he lives, could he forgive you? Could he forgive me?"
"I dun care iffen he fergi'es me, fer he shall be ali'e, and that is all that matters,†she answered as she choked back a sob.
"I do not wish to be empty, Thrennoadae."
"Then let this gi'e ye purpose. Do something fer yerself, nae just fer others, do this fer him, and fer ye.†Her voice lowered, and she took a small step forward, her eyes begging him. “Please.â€
He looked at her, and his eyes filled with doubt. “Will it? I do not know.†He paused, and took a small step towards her. “I wish something else from you,†came his chilling voice.
Thrennoadae’s head jerked back and her eyes flashed. “I wish your love. Yours is the love that completes men. It fills them with warmth. I thought I would have that by taking your body, but it failed.†A shudder passed through her body, and she folded her arms across her chest, hiding herself from his eyes.
"I cannae gi'e ye m'lo'e."
"You give it to others"
"I lo'e those whom I trust and care fer, nae those that harm me, that .. use me."
Slowly he continued, "They all use you to feel what I wish to feel. The Reaver, I did not see love in his eyes. Nor the paladins that come and go." She paled at his words, at the nonchalant attitude taken with the mistakes and moments of her past. He continued, “And Predian, intoxicated by the same feelings I wish from you."
"I dun lo'e ye Kaidric, I lo'e Predian," she offered softly, a hint of fear in her voice at his desires.
“I've known emptiness and rage. Why am I to never know love? What makes him better than I?" he mused, voice still without any real sense of emotion. Thrennoadae’s eyes turned, and she gazed outwards towards the house where her love, her Predian lay dying.
“His time grows shorter, he is dying Kaidric."
In a rage, Kaidric screamed out, “I don’t care!â€
"Iffen Predian dies, there will be nae anything left o' me, fer I will die too. Will ye let that happen?"
Coldy, he answered, "Let him die. And then perhaps I can have you."
"I shall be dead too!" she fired back in response, chest heaving with her fear and her anger.
“Dead, as I wished to be, and you would not allow.â€
It was too much, she felt time was running through her fingers. She was out of time, and so was Predian. "Ye bastard! Fer once do the right thing! Ye failed o'er and o'er!! Ye failed yerself, Rhalm, now ye'll fail the only brother that cared fer ye!!" She stood one last moment, hoping beyond hope that he would come to his senses, that all she’d done was not in vain.
Slowly, his hand lifted and pushed through his hair. He eyed her up and down, admiring her sleek form, and then his cold, empty voice spoke. “No. If you will not give me what I want, then no."
A shudder took hold of her as she turned, and slowly walked to her belongings. She dressed, knowing his eyes watched her from behind and caring not. Finally, as she buckled her kilt in place, she turned and looked over her shoulder at him.
“I hope ye rot in Hell with yer own tormented soul as yer only companion fer eternity,†and she walked out the door, and ran back to Dartel’s home, praying she was in time to see her love still drawing breath.

What kind of awful curse stole Threnn's V's from her. The next story should include lifting that curse.

Well...my part is written up and in Pred's hands for approval...but the selfish bastard actually wants to write another part himself before I can post...sheesh, some people. <winks>
This sure has been a great piece to read and help in my own special, twisted way. Look forward to Pred's next piece and the go-ahead to put mine up.

Landric had almost reached his mailbox in Rylstone when he froze in his tracks. Another dead squirrel lay at his feet: smite-fried, like all the others. As he kicked it under a shrubbery with an "ARGGH!" he looked over his shoulder at the Kaidric Cross cottage, where the lights and chimney were ablaze with activity. Landric's eyes narrowed.
Knowing that the cottage's occupant couldn't hear him, Landric shook his fist and shouted "At least you won't be causing any trouble in THERE!!"
The mailbox was empty. Nothing from Thrennoadae. The wedding was only days away and the woman had yet to come up with her wedding vows. Landric still had no idea what he would be reading at the ceremony. "What on EARTH has the lass been doing?"
OOC This needed a huge BUMP this morning.

She couldn’t go straight there, not feeling as she did right then. With a rushed sense of urgency, she ran home, to her home… to Predian’s home. She dashed up the stairs and poured some water into a basin. With a shiver, she stripped herself bare and using a cloth washed the worst of everything from her skin. Nothing would take away the cling of his touch against her soul though. Her eyes were drawn to the far corner as she began to dress again, and she sighed as her gaze fell upon the soft folds of her wedding dress. She’d not even yet decided the color, and now she wondered if she’d even be able to wear it. She fought back the angry tears that tightened up her throat, and finished dressing in a simple tunic and kilt.
He needs me, she reminded herself. It doesn’t matter, married or not. He needs me.
Fingertips brushed against the fine silk fabric, then she rushed back down the stairs, nearly stumbling in her haste. Across the field she ran, and burst into Dartel’s home out of breath. He scowled up at her from his books.
“Be more quiet woman, this is delicate wording I must memorize.â€
But she heard him not as she strode across the room to drop at Predian’s side. He was still breathing, if barely, and she paused to whisper a soft prayer of thanksgiving. Gently, she took his hands in her own, and laid her cheek against them. His flesh was clammy, chilled to the touch but she paid it no mind.
“I shant lea’e yer side again Predian, fer anything. I’m here fer ye. I’m here m’heart.†Kissing his knuckles softly, she finally allowed herself the tears for her transgressions. Dartel ignored the heartbroken woman, eyes intent on his tomes, eager for the ceremony he was researching, and the opportunity it presented.
***
Rhalm heard the noises above her, the sounds of sex, and the argument between the pair afterwards. Every word cut through her heart like a knife, hurting her more deeply than she could ever remember feeling. She had thought Kaidric a good man, with a tragic past that held him back, but now she found he was darker than imagined and it frightened her. She could not stay another moment in that house.
Quietly, she packed her belongings into a small satchel. There were not many, just a few changes of clothing and a staff or two. When the door slammed upstairs her heart leapt into her throat. Softly, she moved to the stairs to listen, and heard nothing. Yet, inwardly she knew he was still there. Waiting for something. A momentary wish to speak to him, to understand him passed through her, but she pushed it aside. This was nothing she wanted any part of.
Carefully, she crept up the stairs, and saw him sitting blankly, staring at a wall. He was still unclothed and she averted her eyes. Any remote attraction she might have felt for him had been burned out of her by the words uttered just moments ago. On leather clad feet she padded to the door, staying against the far wall.
Perhaps he heard her breathing, perhaps he felt here there, but he turned not nor acknowledged her presence. Her hand rested against the door handle, and without a backward glance, she pushed it open, and stepped through into the morning light, and was gone.

IC - A Friar Falling

Thrennoadae’s storming out left Kaidric a bit rattled. He expected her to beg him, after all, she needed him to save her lover’s life. She had not closed the cottage door behind her, and he calmly walked to it. As he approached he heard a familiar voice “hello brotherâ€. The voice was followed immediately with pain, several men stormed into the cottage, knocking Kaidric back. Two men grabbed the cleric by the arms and slammed him against the far wall. In the shock he did not notice a bracer being clamped to his wrist. Almost as quickly as he was slammed back, he felt a sharp pain in his gut as a third man punched him. The other two forced Kaidric to the floor and the three proceeded to kick at him, as he tried to curl up into a protective ball. The men wore iron tipped boots, and the repeated blows to Kaidric’s head and chest caused him to nearly lose consciousness.
“That’s enough.†The voice spoke again, and Kaidric could make out the sound of the door closing behind him. The voice was now easily recongnizable. It spoke calmly, but with a clear and simple authority. It was the voice of Kaidric’s half-brother Rynnthorn. Rynnthorn, a few year’s Predian’s elder, had been the head of the Cross estate since the death of their father. He was a cunning and vile noble, armsman by trade but career politician.
Hearing Rynnthorn’s command, the men ceased their assault on Kaidric. Kaidric’s eyes strained to focus through the overwhelming pain he was feeling. Though his vision was blurred, he could make out six men. The three who had been beating on him had taken positions close to his body, arms crossed as if guarding him. A fourth man carried a chair and placed it in front of Kaidric, a few feet away. Rynnthorn softly stepped to the chair and took a seat, and the final thug stood behind him.
Rynnthorn made a hand gesture that Kaidric could not make out. It was followed by footsteps and the opening and closing of a door. Kaidric deduced that Rynnthorn had ordered one of his men to stand guard outside.
“So tell me Kaidric, was she all that I imagine?†Rynnthorn spoke with a smirk, clearly inquiring about Kaidric’s time with Thrennoadae. “On second thought, don’t tell me. I’ll find out myself in time.â€
The look on Kaidric’s face was of confusion, and the cleric strained to speak but was cut off. “You really thought I wouldn’t know? Little happens in this realm without my knowledge. Especially nothing that occurs within these walls. This is my cottage, after all.â€
Rynnthorn gave a nod to one of his guards. The guard stepped in front of Kaidric, and then stomped down on the cleric’s hand. With Kaidric’s hand pinned beneath his boot, the large man grinded his heel into it, crushing it into the wooden floor. Kaidric cried out in pain, a shriek that would have turned the stomachs of ordinary men.
After what seemed like an eternity, the man raised his boot and allowed the hand to be free. Kaidric lifted his now mangled hand with his good one. He attempted to summon his healing powers but nothing happened. The bracer on his wrist glowed briefly and then stopped.
Rynnthorn laughed. “Your powers will work again when I allow them to. And the pain you feel is as good as you will ever feel again, if you do not do as I say.â€
“What do you want?â€
“Predian and I have never been close, Kaidric. He doesn’t approve of my methods or my politics, but he is my brother and he will not die. If it’s your life required to save his, so be it.â€
Rynnthorn paused and reflected a moment. “You know, your mother gave up a good fight before I killed her. She was the first life I ever took. Oh, I didn’t enjoy it, but she left me no choice. She was trying to blackmail me, threatening to ruin the family name. If the knowledge of my father’s affair with a servant were released, we’d have been ruined. She had to die.†Rynnthorn continued, “I never knew that you existed. I never thought to look. Had I, you’d not be here today. And yet, here you are.â€
“I will not save Predian.†Kaidric spoke, his voice shaking from the pain.
“You will, I’ve no doubt of that.†Rynnthorn nodded again to one of his guards. Kaidric was held down and his head held back. One man poured a foul liquid down Kaidric’s throat while a third man forced him to swallow. Kaidric choked down the liquid, unable to spit it out. “For the next day or so, you’ll do anything I tell you; once that drug sets in.â€
Rynnthorn laughed out loud, “I didn’t need to cause you all this pain, but I had no choice. I wanted her first.†With that, Rynnthorn rose up from his chair and motioned for his men to leave the cottage. He was half out the door himself when he turned again to look at his brother, “go to Dartel’s home, Kaidric. Do what the cabalist asks of you. I’ll be watching.â€

IC - A Friar Falling

The trip to Castle Myrddin in Snowdownia was quick and uneventful in itself. Dartel had obviously been in the relic room for quite some time when the others arrived. Thrennoadae entered first with Kaidric leaning heavily upon her, Rharan just steps behind her, a large hammer strapped across his back and Predian draped in his powerful arms. Dartel glanced up from his preparations a moment, pointing to the corner of the room, “Wait there and tread not on the chalk runes and symbols.†They all shuffled into the corner of the room Dartel indicated and watched with extreme curiosity as Dartel went about the painstakingly detailed preparations, their faces screwed up with a mixture of shock, revulsion, wonderment and awe.
The windows had been draped with black velvet, denying even the strongest rays of sunlight entrance. Despite this, the room was well-lit due to the hundreds of candles burning throughout it. The candles outlined a large circle in the middle of the room, the shafts of the candles alternating pure white and pitch black. Beneath the flickering light were visible many arcane runes drawn in exquisite detail upon the floor. A putrid odor hung about the room, seemingly emanating from the Cauldron of Dagda.
Thrennoadae glanced around the room, then at her companions, her face showing the lines of worry etched about her eyes and the corners of her mouth. She recognized a few of the symbols from her days long ago in Hibernia, and those were only vague memories for she had seen them but once because it was forbidden to draw them for any reasons. She closed her eyes and searched her memories, running back through her lessons of old, trying to recall anything about them, but the only thing she recalled was her instructor’s dire warning, “Death nae takes lightly those who tread upon him.†While Thrennoadae never understood those words, they filled her with more than a bit of trepidation now. She continued scanning the floor and noticed a few runes of Norse mythology, while having no insight as to their meaning, she could begin to guess. There were many other intricate drawings upon the floor, but none that she could identify. Rharan stood motionless, his face devoid of emotion as he stared past the unconscious friend in his arms and focused intently on Dartel. Kaidric sat in the corner of the room, his fingers scratching alternate wrists as the itch of full healing set in upon him, his eyes sunken back in their sockets as he prepared to give his life over once more.
Dartel rose slowly, nodding his satisfaction as he turned a complete circle. “The preparations are now complete, my designs are flawless.†Dartel crept carefully on the balls of his feet as he moved outside the circle to the corner opposite the group. He bent low and picked up two robes from the floor, one pure white, the other dark as infinite night. He draped one robe across each forearm and walked to stand before Kaidric. “You, Kaidric, wear the white robes. You will be Predian’s guide from the hand of Death this day.†Dartel said before turning to Rharan, “When both are robed, lay Predian to the right of the Cauldron, head near the large black candle. Kaidric will lie on the other side, his head beneath the white candle. I cannot stress enough, do not upset the chalk drawings.†Dartel waited for Kaidric to pull his robe from his forearm before thrusting the black robe toward Thrennoadae. Hesitantly, she clasped her fingers around the robe and pulled it from his arm. Dartel stepped back behind Rharan and unbuckled the hammer from his back. “Ah, Thor’s Hammer, well done Rharan. The flesh of the Legion arrived by messenger nearly an hour before your arrival.†Rharan nodded and sighed, “Never thought I would say this, but thank God for the Guild of Shadows. They were instrumental in the borrowing of the Hammer for a short time.â€
Rharan held Predian upright as Thrennoadae took to disrobing him and dressing him in his ceremonial black robe. Kaidric moved slowly as he redressed himself, his motions slow and deliberate as he detached himself from the moment, from all moments, tried to transcend his mortal coil.
Dartel took Thor’s Hammer and pressed it roughly into the Cauldron, grinding the contents into a thick paste as the Cauldron of Dagda glowed fiercely with an eerie purple hue. He chanted in an ancient tongue, long forgotten to most men as he prepared the ingredients. Both the subjects properly garbed, Rharan aided by placing both men properly within the circle at their appointed locations.
Predian lie still, his flesh cool and pale as his chest rose with each shallow breath. No fits of coughing came to him at this point, his very life teetering dangerously at the cliff of oblivion. Kaidric lie with his eyes closed, hands folded across his lower abdomen as he made his peace God.
Dartel turned to Thrennoadae and Rharan, his voice low and commanding, “The time has come. Close the door and remain silent. Speaking or breaking the sanctity of the circle will kill us all, remain at the door or be gone with you now.†Thrennoadae and Rharan nodded solemnly and remained silent, both backing up a few steps closer to the doorway as Rharan reached back and pulled shit the heavy oaken door.
Dartel turned back and thrust both hands into the Cauldron, drawing forth a cupped handful of the vile contents as he went first to Kaidric. He knelt beside the white-robed man and brought his hands to his lips, the contents dripping onto Kaidric’s lips and running into his mouth as he swallowed and held back the urge to wretch. Kaidric stiffened sharply as he felt the liquid burn its way down into his stomach, sure that it had destroyed each part of his throat on the way down. Dartel rushed to Predian and likewise dripped the substance onto his lips and into his mouth. Much like Kaidric, Predian’s body went completely rigid, his eyes snapping wide open as he seemed to scream in silence. Thrennoadae stepped forward, her heart screaming to her to end this unholy ceremony, but Rharan stopped her by grabbing her arm and pulling her back and shaking his head, “This is in Dartel’s hands now Threnn.â€
Dartel watched with morbid curiosity as his potion worked its wicked effects upon each man. He watched as their bodies died completely from the taste of dragon’s blood, a substance bane to the mortal palette. He waited for the moment of the next effect, eager more to justify his greatness in his own mind than for the lives of his subjects. Dartel smiled broadly as he began to see both men’s spirits spill forth from their lips. “Yes, yes†he mumbled, “the succubus is drawing their spirits as I predicted.†Rharan said a silent prayer and Thrennoadae felt the tears stream down her cheeks as both Predian’s and Kaidric’s very souls seeped from their mouths and hovered above their bodies, rising toward the ceiling. Each mans’ spirit a light shade of blue that flickered to white, vaguely resembling a human form as they floated up.
“Now...now†Dartel seemed to command in a low voice. Both bodies lurched furiously as they inhaled deeply once, then lie back to rest, their chests rising slowly in unison, very slowly, but alive nonetheless. “The flesh of Legion will not allow your bodies to die.†Both spirits stopped immediately as their bodies came to life beneath them and began to hover back to them, drawn inexplicably back to the land of the living. “NO!†Dartel screamed, “First to the light, it will cleanse you Predian, then you must draw him back Kaidric.†Dartel watched, his un-blinking eyes narrowed as he inhaled with shallow-breathed excitement. Predian’s spirit rose toward the ceiling, Kaidric’s following, but remaining a short distance behind. A blinding flash erupted in the room as Predian’s spirit touched the ceiling, his essence shining brighter than anything witnessed by those present, but not painful to the eye. Thrennoadae wept openly as she witnessed the beauty and purity of Predian’s true, untainted soul.
Kaidric, apathetic to everything began to follow Predian to the light, desiring the end, needing the end, coveting it as he floated up to join his half-brother. Predian’s spirit, completely whole saw deep into his brother’s essence, knew his intentions and determined that he would save Kaidric after he too was cleansed by the Holy light. Dartel arched his head to the side as he watched Predian’s essence flare brightly, seemingly beckoning Kaidric’s spirit to rise as well. “You cannot, must not†he screamed, “I prepared for but one affront to Death.â€
The moment Kaidric’s essence contacted the light and the Holy explosion occurred, it was drown out by blackness deeper than anything imaginable. A darkness so deep it weighed upon the souls of all present took the room. The only thing remaining visible were the souls of Predian and Kaidric floating nearly 6 feet above the floor before a specter of Death itself flashed into existence. Dartel felt his cold stare upon every inch of his body as though it were pressing through him. Death hovered before them in all his infinite glory and wickedness. A cloak of night wavered behind him on a gale force wind that stunk of death and decay, his skeletal figure mostly hidden beneath a robe that glimmered with screaming, distorted souls of the Fallen trapped within them. The skeletal jaw moved, but the words issued forth not by true sound, only into the minds of all present. “Foolish mortals. I am Death, you shall learn that in its truest measure shortly, your flesh, your blood will be my playthings," the spirit chided.
Dartel blanched as he gazed upon his end, “But...but, you should be powerless here.â€
The specter laughed then, the sound nearly bringing blood to all their ears as it shrieked horribly through their heads. “You prepared well Cabalist, this I will grant you, but that hammer is fit for salvaging, not a God, thus your ceremony was open to my eyes.â€
Death raised his mighty scythe and took aim upon the two stranded souls, “I shall take these two first and let you witness their destruction.†Death’s scythe whistled toward Predian and Kaidric, the very fabric of creation being torn in its wake as it bore down upon them. Thrennoadae screamed out as the scythe tore through both their souls, rending them in half, their light flickering and fading instantly. Rharan called out a prayer to God stepped forward, futilely believing his ability to aid in some form.
Dartel wasted not a moment as he clapped his hands together sharply, the crack of flesh on flesh echoing in the room as he screamed out in defiance of Death. Dartel screamed out, his vocal cords nearly snapping with the strain, “I DENY YOU THIS†as he sent forth his life essence to the two souls. A brilliant flash of light erupted in the room, a cataclysmic explosion sending everyone into darkness as the abyss swallowed them.
Thrennoadae was the first to wake, her eyes fluttering lightly open as she glanced around, adjusting to the light spilling in through the destroyed windows. Dartel lie near death, blood trickling slowly about the corner of his mouth. Rharan lie unconscious, but in good health, against the door, his tongue protruding slightly through his mouth which lie agape. Thrennoadae called forth her healing powers quickly upon Dartel and made sure he was stable before turning her attention to Predian and Kaidric, both men lie still and peaceful as they did before the ceremony. She sat down and burst into sobs as she saw Predian’s chest laid still, not a breath passing his neither lips nor Kaidric’s.
“Pred, dear Pred†she called out, “why?â€
“Why what?†Predian’s voice answered weakly.
Thrennoadae blanched and nearly fainted when she realized it had come from Kaidric’s mouth.

Dartel your last piece really knocked my socks off. I even know how it's going to end (because I can't handle long-term suspense and I made someone spill the beans in game ) and I was STILL scared.
<applauds all the writers>
Stuff like this is why I clicked on "Percival, the RP Server" originally, and Thrennoadae & Predian's IC posts in particular are what brought me back from the darkness that is Cancellation a couple of months ago.

Those were the only words uttered, as Kaidric drifted back into his unconscious state. She leaned over her love’s still form, and she could hear the faint beating of his heart and felt his warmth breath exhale against her cheek. Hot tears stained her cheeks anew as she listened to his breathing. Clear and deep breaths that filled his lungs easily, no more wheezing or rattling, no more gasping for air. She turned to look at Dartel, but he was examining Kaidric. Rharan began to stir as well, rubbing the back of his head as he slowly stood up.
“We ha’e ta get him home,†she whispered softly, afraid to raise her voice yet.
“Don’t you mean them, Threnn?†Rharan replied just as quietly.
A blush touched her cheek and she forced a nod. “Aye.. them..†yet a glance at Kaidric made her stomach twist in knots.
With the wit he’d shown before, Rharan was able to contrive a stretcher, and they placed both men’s inert bodies together. Groaning, with Rharan at one end and Dartel and Thrennoadae at the other, they managed to get them down the stairs and to the waiting horses outside. The ride from Snowdonia to Rylestone was easily the longest she’d ever taken. She rode close to Predian’s horse where he was strapped to the saddle, while Rharan stood watch over Kaidric’s form. Dartel, normally full of himself and talkative had said nothing, and that frightened Thrennoadae more, almost as much as Kaidric’s words earlier.
Kaidric’s words… Predian’s voice.
She didn’t tell Dartel, she didn’t know what to say. Maybe it was a trick of her mind, yet she knew it wasn’t. The images of the ritual were burned into her memories, the gleaming scythe, the magics of the cabalist. A shudder whispered through her, and she glanced between the brothers.
Finally, they arrived in front of Thrennoadae’s home.
“You must keep them together, until they both wake,†Dartel said immediately.
“No… I dun want Kaidric here..†she retorted.
“I care not what you want wench, they stay together or you risk further injury.â€
Rharan, ever the diplomat, simply carried Predian up to the bedroom, laying him into his bed. Then he found a traveler’s pallet, and made up a small part of the floor against the wall in their bedroom, and brought Kaidric up as well. He glanced at Threnn, and offered her a brief hug before taking his silent leave. She could see the unrest in the paladin’s eyes before he turned and headed home to his wife and children. Dartel examined both men briefly, and told her curtly to keep them warm and dry, and above everything else, together.
And then, she was alone. A glance at the sky to the east showed the sun would soon rise. Suddenly, she was exhausted. Her body felt as if there were lead weights attached to her flesh as she pushed herself back up the stairs and closed the front door behind her. She stirred up the fire, and with an apprehensive glance, forced her way up the stairs to the bedroom. In the dim morning light, she could see their bodies, still yet breathing deeply, laying exactly where Rharan had placed them. Her eyes gave a brief glance at Kaidric before she turned and crawled into the bed next to Predian.
Sleep overwhelmed her in moments, and she drifted off holding tightly to her love.
**
Hours past, and the three lay sleeping in the small house. Near twilight, she felt Predian stir against her side and her eyes snapped open.
“Predian?†she whispered faintly, voice thick still from sleep.
Slowly, his eyes opened, his beautiful brown eyes. He gazed up at his love as she huddled next to him on the bed. His hand rose and he touched her cheek gently, yet she felt it not as she stared into his eyes.

Rharan walked silently to his home. Something kept teasing at his mind... a phrase, something, he'd almost heard. Something about that being - demon, fallen angel, spectre of death... whatever it was - it almost seemed like it'd spoken directly to him at some point. Yet, as he replayed the events in his head, he knew there had been no time for that... everything had happened so quickly...
He walked through the door of his cottage. Sabreen looked up from where she sat, spread on the floor in a most ignoble fashion, playing with the babes. The wizardess looked up at him, her face turned serious. "They went through with the ceremony, did they not?"
"Aye, they did. But I fear it didn't go as intended." He explained the recent events to his wife, as he unfastened his armor and cleaned it.
"Dartel is but a fool, he should have been more careful," she pronounced at the end of the story. She stood, crossed the room, and hugged her husband tightly. "I'm just glad you're all right."
* * *
Sleep was a long time coming that night for Rharan. Finally, he drifted off, his wife curled against his side as usual.
- and awoke, sat upright in the bed suddenly, feeling horribly chilled. The voice... that thing's voice, he remembered now. As he was losing consciousness, that horrid voice drilling into his brain -
. "And for invoking His name in My presence, you
. shall surely lose all which you hold most dear..."
"What is wrong?" Sabreen asked him sleepily, as she gently urged him to lay back down.
"... nothing. A bad dream," he said hesitantly, as he stretched back out.
She yawned, and cuddled against him, resting her head on his shoulder. "Go back to sleep, my love, they'll be waking soon," she murmured, as she drifted away almost immediately.
Rharan held her close, and did not sleep again that night.

Theres more..
but guess whose turn it is ... again..
Of course, in Predian's defense, he has a real life, has to work, a wife to come home too, and then all that ganking that gets in the way.
Thank you all so much that keep this alive though, it means the world to us.

Dartel sat alone in his small cottage, staring blankly at the various tomes and notes he had compiled before going through with the ceremony. The dark words of Death echoed in his head, “you flesh, your blood, will be my playthings.†Dartel shuddered to his core as he thought of the many wicked things Death implied with that remark. He knew now that his soul was marked, and upon his demise, the pasty white boned hand of Death would drag him into the Abyss for eternal torment. He felt the mark on his soul acutely as he searched within himself.
Dartel’s eyes drifted over to the bed where Predian once lie, Thrennoadae diligently keeping watch over him for most the time. His thoughts drifted off and sleep took him as his face slowly drifted down to rest upon an open tome. Dartel’s dreams were many and varied, he dreamt of Death stalking him throughout all time, could feel Death’s bony fingers ripping into his flesh, clawing him as rivulets of blood formed in the wake of those tearing claws. He dreamt of the ceremony and relived every fearful moment until the point he screamed out in defiance to Death and transferred his life force into the ceremony and the two brothers in hopes of blocking Death out. He felt a strange calling to learn more of that spirit realm now, perhaps only through further study could he find ways to shield himself upon death from the inevitable.
It was the last dream that had Dartel find himself sitting upright quickly, his breathing quickened and a stunned look upon his face. He recalled Thrennoadae in her wedding gown, however he was starting at her as though he were next to her at the alter. He recalled each beautiful moment of the ceremony and of her, the way her hair was done up with flowers from the frontiers, the way her breasts heaved over the gentle V of her dress, the gleam in her eyes as she looked upon…him? Even in his dream Dartel was confused. He kept reminding himself of the hatred he had for her, this heathen Cleric/Druid that didn’t belong anywhere, but could not push away the feelings of…love?…despite his intense disliking of her. He had once wanted to bed her, but only to prove to her that it was her nature to be evil, to be beneath him…of late he wanted nothing to do with her, but this dream, this memory…confused him. The dream continued well into the night, past the small reception with their friends until they stole themselves away into their bedroom. Dartel recalled with extreme clarity the events of their wedding night, the flowery smell of her skin, the smoothness of her skin, the taste of her kiss and her screams of pleasure. It was those screams that awoke Dartel, his eyes wide and searching, but nothing outwardly. “What in the hell happened to me?†Dartel questioned the darkness.

There is more...problem is that the next part is stuck in Predian's head and I think his brain is constipated. <laughs>

I followed your story shortly after I started playing over on Nimue. Glad your adding more to the story. I had to go back and read the beginning again to remember where I had left off at. Didnt matter, it was a great read then and it will be even after you finish it methinks.

Im a avid roleplayer at heart. I currently play in 2 D&D campaigns and play mostly RPG's. But I come from Albion Gawaine and on there is no roleplaying drama, more like soap opera drama mixed with steriod induced professional wrestling drama... :\
Basically my server sucks! To bad I hate the XP tread mill, or i would re-roll over to Percival where its obviously a good time to be a roleplayer! I also love to write this type of stuff.
Great story guys, keep at it! Maybe I'll /lvl30 a toon on here! Maybe another Wizard

No, Molten, the good folks continuing this story are from Albion. But only Hibernia has /level 30 here. So you can /level 20 in Albion or Midgard, but only Hibernia for 30.

(I decided to try writing in first person, because I've had horrible writer's block)
(where we last left off, from Thrennoadae)
Slowly, his eyes opened, his beautiful brown eyes. He gazed up at his love as she huddled next to him on the bed. His hand rose and he touched her cheek gently, yet she felt it not as she stared into his eyes.
-----------------------------------
“Thrennoadae.†I spoke her name softly and a warm smile crept across my face. She was a vision, an angel guiding me back to life. I felt my strength returning to me, with one hand I brushed against the cheek of my love. With my other hand I clenched my fingers tightly, feeling the muscles in my arms pulse without pain or resistance. This was the strongest I’d felt in some time.
There was more, however. I had gained something beyond my own strength, something I could feel within me. Something strange and yet eerily familiar. I closed my eyes and felt my body shudder as memories flashed before me. Memories not my own. A monastery, the pain of loss, rape... With that thought my entire body tensed and my eyes violently opened. I was shaking and short of breath, but my eyes were clearly focused. I was not focused on the eyes of my smiling love, but beyond her, at the figure looming over us both.
He just stood there like a shadow. Watching me, watching us. He did not speak, he did not move, I could not tell if he was even breathing. He stood, projecting his hate upon us. I could feel the weight of the deeds he had done, he had not saved my life by choice, but by force. And the price, the price was higher than I could stomach. The smile on my face turned to stone and I too could feel rage within me.
“Leave.†I struggled to force the word, but it was said with cold conviction. “Now,†I continued.
My brother turned and walked away. I could hear his footsteps trail down the stairs, but more than that, I could see the door through his eyes. I could feel the cold metal of the handle as he touched it.
My eyes returned to Thrennoadae’s, but I had no words for her. Her dreams had been violated, and her body traded for my life. She had endured more through this than I had, I walked close to death, but she lived the hell I was not destined for, and now the man who caused it was part of me. For the first time in my life, I felt fear.

Time had flown by, or had it? She couldn’t tell one day from another it felt, not since that night. A chill sped up and down her spine as she forced herself to take a deep breath, then another. Yet today, today was their wedding day. Her gaze drifted to the corner where her gown hung suspended from the wooden beams. Her eyes traveled over its layers of gleaming pale gold silk decorated along the bodice with its iridescent gems that caught even the smallest bit of light. The wedding was but hours away, and she felt… a bit queasy thinking of it. She wanted to fight the feeling back as mere nervousness, her entire guild and many of their friends were gathering outside to watch their union. Yet, she knew it was more than that. Something had changed that night.
Predian was himself, sweet, kind, generous, yet there were the occasional glimpses of his eyes as she caught him gazing at her that sent a shiver through her, raising the gooseflesh on her arms. It would be gone a moment later, but she knew she’d seen it. As for Kaidric, he was an enigma, and one she avoided at all costs. If she saw him coming down the path towards Rylestone, she would turn the other way. Of course, it was obvious, but she could not help herself. She was afraid of the words she’d hear come from his lips. She was terrified of the gaze he’d level on her. She feared she’d look into his eyes, and see Predian trapped inside.
Her nervous fingers dropped the brush she’d been using and she peered into the mirror. Her features were pale, her eyes looked too bright for her cheeks. The wealth of her golden hair tumbled about her shoulders as she debated on how to wear it still. Downstairs, she could hear the sounds of people moving about, making the preparations. They’d hired cooks and gardeners for this day, and the whole village was decked out like a festival. Glancing down at the vanity in front of her, her eyes rested on a small box. Gently she pried it open and admired the glint of platinum. It was Predian’s wedding band. Across the face was inscribed a Gaelic prayer for marriage, and inside was written a few simple words for her husband to be.
“Hope everlasting, promises eternal. Love flows, grows and blossoms between us,†she whispered the translation to herself and sighed softly. She carefully closed the box and stood, stretching out her frame. “Yer getting old Threnn…,†she told herself as she pressed her knuckles against the polished wood. She leaned close in, turning her face side to side slowly. Here and there in the strands of her thick golden hair, she could see a silver hair. The lines beside her eyes had thickened over the last few years. And inside, she was beginning to feel older. “Bah, thirty years is nae that old..†and she pushed herself away and padded over to where her gown waited. She loosened it from its clips, and the soft silk flowed freely across her flesh as she slid it over her head. The hem brushed the floor, encasing her legs in its silken length, as her shoulders were bared, just a thin sliver of fabric traced from her breast to her back. She turned side to side, admiring the way it clung to her torso, then flared out in a riot of fabric, and the gems glittered softly against her breasts. A simple v-shape showed not too much, but yet accented her figure perfectly. A smile touched her lips as she nodded. “Nae bad fer a Celt…, nae bad.â€
She heard a heavy footstep against the stairs, and a soft knock at the door. “Aye? Come in, I be dressed,†and she smiled bright as Milric walked through the door. The knight was her truest friend, ever there for her when she most needed him, and today was no different.
“Milric!†she beamed at him, and darted over, heedless of her gown to give him a tender hug. He returned it chastely, though with enough warmth that she knew it genuine. Giggling like a young girl, she twirled in front of him, showing off her gown and her long hair swung freely about her.
“What do ye think?â€
"I think the dress is the second most lovely thing in the room," he said after a moment's appraisal. Her cheeks flushed bright red and she smiled a dazzling smile at him.
“Bah, yer speaking with a tongue as sil’er as yer armor taday.â€
She gazed back at him, noting the gleam of his armor. He was decked out in his full regalia, polished till any touch of light set it shining. His black cloak was freshly cleaned and not a single stain or tear marred its length as it swirled about his ankles. His dark hair was brushed back and she could see just the touch of gray at his temples. Oddly, she’d never thought of him as old before, yet she knew him nearly twenty years her elder.
A bit of awkward silence filled the air, and she attempted to make small talk. She asked him if he’d seen Predian yet, and if everything was nearly ready downstairs. Finally, the silence filled the air again, and softly she whispered, “Milric, do ye think… do ye think he’s changed?â€
Milric looked out the window, his eyes fixed as if staring at something impossibly far away. He turned back. With a faint, sad smile he offered, "Inside each of us is all the people we have ever been."
She nods and almost said something in return yet the words seem to fail her.
Further conversation was stifled as Landric bustled up to the door and knocked loudly. “Threnn! Its time!â€
“I’m coming Landric, I’m coming,†she yelled back and then gazed at Milric. “Will ye walk me down m’dearest friend?â€
"The honor is mine," he said offering her his arm.

-OOC-
Alright.. for those that have been so faithfully following this and all our dear in game friends..
We will not be holding the wedding IN game.. it will be simply told here in story form. Predian and I agreed this is what we wanted.
For those of you that wish to attend.. feel free to use the next day or two to add a short blurb of the story of your own. Feel free be at the wedding preparations, taking your seats.. whatever.
We'll be taking it back over from Threnn's appearance and her walking up the aisle, so no jumping around in our time line! <grins>
And yeah.. if i'm being a bit strict, I'm sorry.. but i know some of you really wanted to jump in but just didn't know where. This is the spot.
The scene is set, Rylestone is decked out in the finest, the three Ascension minstrels are playing (Vektar, Seymoura & Graver) and Predian and Landric are speaking somewhere and soon to come to the front of the benches. Theres refreshments and many friends at hand. If you can see yourself as a guest at the wedding, and want to bump into a few friends, have at it and enjoy.

A hooded and cloaked figure smiled at the preparations, winding up a servant's staircase to a balcony to watch from above. So many weddings over time; and it was obvious from the faces below that this would be a joyous one. She took in the Church and the people within as if for the very first time. Or the very last; she nodded to herself, and froze the moment in a memory she could take with her.
Blowing a kiss to the unseeing congregation, and whispering fervent hopes for happiness, she left the way she came, unnoticed.

Behind a distant tree, watching the bustle of preparation, was a figure not seen in Albion in ages. A slight smile pierces his face as he remembers his friend. A moment later, he is gone.

Gliondel took a deep breath as he tightened his cloak up around him to hide his elven form. He passed through Caste Sauvage unnoticed. The journey will be much easier now, he thought to himself.
Gliondel finally arrived at the Cross home. Much to his fortune, he was not noticed as he entered through the door. He pulled his hood more over his face as he walked to the gift table and laid two marvelous jewels on it. On one was a Gaelic inscription, "Best wishes to you and Predian, Thrennodae. May you two always be happy, from Gliondel Istalindir." On the other, written in English, was, "Predian, may your God bless this day for you and may you remain happy for the rest of your days. Gliondel Istalindir"
He chuckled softly, knowing these two would never know who Gliondel Istalindir was. He decided to stay for the wedding, realizing his life was in danger. But he didn't care. Gliondel sat in the darkest corner of the room from which he would watch the ceremony.

Steely eyes gazed unfeeling from the depths of his cloak. Wolfsbane leaned nonchalantly at the back of the congregation, wondering why the hell he was there.
Weddings represented everything that brought him pain. And even worse, it reminded him of his own wedding to Brienne, and the twins she now took care of herself.
He sighed and shrugged, and then he remembered who was to be married.
Predian, the friar that had given him a strange friendship throughout the years, was marrying a beloved friend, Thrennoadae.
The two of them could not have hoped for a more perfect match, and it he was envied to see the sight of such love.
Furtively he pulled a flask from his side and drank deeply, but not without first raising it to a toast.
He whispered, "To your love, Thrennoadae and Predian Cross... may it never wander."

"The honour is mine." Landric heard Milric's deep voice through the door and, a second later, saw the door knob turn. For some reason Landric decided -- that very second -- that he did not want to see Thrennoadae in her gown right then. Not until the ceremony.
With a shout of "Oh, I've got to change!" over his shoulder he went barreling down the hall and the stairs to the landing, where he made his way through the gathering crowds into the room where his vestments had been laid out.
"Has Predian been here?" he asked the attendant acolyte as he slipped out of his robe and held his arms out.
"Yes m'lord, here and dressed and gone he is", said the young acolyte as he held up the first robe -- the alb -- for Landric.
"Alb!" giggled Landric, as he slipped his arms through the carefully pressed, white linen robe. "The name of that one always makes me smile." The acolyte nervously nodded and forced a smile as he wrapped the silver-threaded cincture around Landric's waist, buckling it in the front.
"NO. Not the dalmatic. The TUNICLE. The tunicle is next. How long have you been here?" The acolyte stuttered with fright as he slid the tunicle through Landric's sleeves and over his head. It was shorter than the alb of course, but heavier and more ornate. The white alb still showed at the bottom.
"Three months, m'lord," whispered the acolyte as he shifted the dalmatic, trying to find the front.
"This way" said Landric, and as the third robe went on he added "Oh 'tis all right. You'll learn soon, not to worry". Landric smoothed the gilded dalmatic with one hand and pointed to the chasuble with his other. "Yes, that one is next. The funny-shaped one." He sighed as the gaudiest one yet slipped over his head.
"Okay four robes is enough." Landric held out his left hand and let the acolyte wrap the long maniple about his wrist, just enough so that it would stay fastened when he lowered his hand.
"Why the left hand only for the maniple, m'lord?" asked the boy. Landric looked at the acolyte blankly.
"I do not know. Frankly I don't care. I'll let you in on a little secret, my dear boy: I HATE all this foofery. So don't ask questions. Just learn how it all goes on and what it looks like in the end. And forget the rest." Landric turned to his desk and pointed at the next piece -- white linen straps with two pendants.
"Now this one, this one I actually like. The pallium. Now remember, the chalice pendant goes in the front, over the chest. And the cross pendant goes over the back. The Albion and the Ascension emblems. Yes, this one I like."
Predian guffawed as he entered the room. "You look like a CLOWN again" he said with a smirk.
"PFFFFF don't pick on me when I can barely move." Landric stretched his neck upwards while the acolyte wrapped the white linen amice piece around his neck and into the top collar of the alb. "And I'm not a clown until the MITER goes on" he said as the acolyte carefully set the large headpiece over Landric's greyed hair.
"Yes, yes with the miter I now look like the King of Spades. Hand me my glass of wine!" bellowed Landric. The acolyte adjusted the lappet with one hand so that it hung from the miter over Landric's right shoulder, and handed the glass of wine to him with his other hand.
Landric smiled approvingly to the boy.
"You know you friars have it easy. None of this fancy gettup. Just the leathers." Landric said as he grasped the long and ornate crosier with his right hand: a staff curved at the very top, based upon a shepherd's crook. Landric hit the wooden floor firmly with the crosier, giving a good solid THUD.
"Predian, my friend, today you're looking better than you have in weeks. You look well again, thank God." Landric pushed his way to the door.
"We're ready. Lets do this. These robes are too damn hot to futz around in."
Predian and Landric walked out and to the back vestibule. "I hope you practiced your lines, Pred. You know how much time Threnn spent on those vows."
Predian nodded "Aye I have" as the two of them proceeded up the aisle, smiling and nodding to the many friends on both sides.
They reached the front, where they turned and waited.

She slipped quietly into a space in the seating at the rear of the congregation. The quiet murmering of the crowd lowered even more as Landric and Predian walked up the Aisle. An air of expectancy passed throughout the crowd as the groom turned to face the crowd.
She quietly smoothed her dress, softly shaking out the folds of her skirt, the garment unfamiliar after the heavy array of plate she usually wore and turned to face the entrance into the aisle as she waited patiently for the bride to appear.

Gazing from the shadows, an unfamiliar form watched the congregation tensely. Having slipped through the gates of Sauvage in the dead of night, he informed no one of his journey. As he walked towards the back, he hid his hands, a slight silver glow visible through his gloves. He smiled gently, thinking of his beloved Nolidnas at home in their bed, sleeping. Sitting down, he mused to himself: "No matter how different, no matter how long they've been enemies, it seems as if almost anyone can be brought together by the love of two people." Weary from many months of unending fighting, he began to wonder why it couldn't always be like this, so peaceful. Suddenly, he snapped back, and his dark eyes once again searched those around him. "Not yet", he whispered to himself... "not yet." And so once more he was alone, waiting for the ceremony to begin.

IC - A Friar Falling

He stood on a green hill in Lough Derg. Rain sloughed from his hair, ran in rivulets down his bearded cheeks, and soaked through the lapses in his armor. The wind, when so minded, beat needles into his weatherworn face, and he squinted his eyes against the driving downpour.
From here, despite the rain, he could see the fastness of Druim Cain, impenetrable, shrouded in mists, a giant of stone and timber protecting the homelands from the merciless hands of invaders. Here, on this hill, Daerein Maghrein was safe. Safe from weapons, safe from strife. From violence.
That bulwark kept the invaders out.
But there was nothing it could do to keep Celts from leaving.
Something caught in his chest, then, and his breath held for a moment. Days long past grew in his mind’s eye, and he remembered sun on his youthful shoulders, light laughter by his side. He remembered friendship, and battles fought in the rolling lands beyond Cain. And he thought of Lotharian, gone so long.
His eyes fell to the sodden green at his feet. Where the fates had taken his friend and guildmaster all that time ago, he had never known. He had never cared to find out, to pursue it. In these times, it was enough that the man was gone, and Daerein still felt the loss.
And he felt the loss of another, one who was close to him, but closer still to Lotharian. She had gone before he had, but she was still alive. He was sure of it. He had seen her on the greens of Emain perhaps a fortnight past. Before recognition had come, he had raised his mace and rushed her, ready to swing, and then had stopped in his tracks, frozen, dumbfounded even, while battle raged around him.
He had squinted, looked ahead, and had decided beyond doubt that it was *her*, she who had gone so long ago. There had been rumors, of course. There were tales of the treachery, of her resurfacing to use her powers for the good of the other side of things.
A stumbling armsman had knocked into him then, brought him to his senses, and he was forced to rejoin the battle. But his heart was not in it at that moment, and it was not long before steel found him, and he fell.
Later, by the bindstone, while the healer worked her arts and brought him back to shape, the cleric's face would not leave his mind. But there was no room for more hate in his heart. There was nothing he could do to bring himself to loathe her, to despise her for her decision. He had known her too long. It was one thing to bring death to nameless enemies, thick trolls and fragile Avalonians, and to be stricken by them… It was another to hurt a friend, even a once-friend as Thrennoadae had been.
He sloughed off his sodden cloak and gathered the overweight material in his arms. Then, he folded it neatly so that the emblem of the Phoenix faced outward, proud. The battle stained garment was placed on the ground, on the crest of this nameless hill in Lough Derg. He had worn this shroud for years; it had been with him on the last day he had seen Threnn, on the last day he had seen Lotharian, and again, on this most recent time in Emain when he saw her once more.
It was time for a new cloak.
Drawing a dagger from a small pouch at his belt, he stood for a long moment, letting the rain wash over his body, and then he drove the dagger through the fabric and into the ground, pinning it there.
Then he turned and left the place, his memories and sorrows not gone, not erased, but abated, shackled to the soil of a land he could only help but love.

IC - A Friar Falling

(If any part of this is a little confusing, its because I've been writing Waybreaker as concurrent against Friar Falling's timeline. So this draws off both -.-)
Aelhaeran shielded his eyes from the dazzling morning sun as he strode a brisk pace along the muddy riverbank of Rylestone. It will still quite early, but the sunrise alone was already promising a warm, clear day. Quite fitting for the event about to unfold. Today, oddly enough, was to be the wedding of Thrennoadae and Predian. The second wedding that is. It'd been some time since he first set foot in Albion. Some time since his first arrival in the harbour of Gothwaite. The chilly morning he'd first met Threnn as he wandered Gothwaite Castle. In spite of himself Aelhaeran shivered at the dark memories of the time he'd spent wandering, little more then an exile without any real path or identity left to call his own. That lost feeling, and the darkness that had occupanied it had first been shaken when he'd met the Celt turned Cleric. As he walked, Ael smiled too himself at his own melodramatic sentiment. If it hadn't been for Threnn, and later on Ascension, he'd probably still be a hopeless wandering vagabond. Still, he wasn't ready to face Threnn again since falling out of grace with the Church of Albion. Threnn or Predian. Predian, the very man that had helped him learn his way along the path of a Friar to begin with. He owed them both a great debt for their friendship, one he didn't feel worthy of being able to repay as he was now. Still, he wasn't about to miss their wedding. Even though he had no intention of walking right into the middle of it. As long as he could at least keep eye over it from afar that would be enough for him.
A sudden resistence on his foot shook him out of his thoughts. Glancing down, he realised he'd wandered a bit closer to the water then he would have liked and the muddy riverbank was clinging to his leather boots in search of a new victim. Making each step a tad more difficult as he had to pull a foot out of the mud to take another stride forward. With a quiet oath he moved further up the riverbank and onto the grass. He should be near his destination by now anyway considering how long he'd been walking. No sooner had the thought crossed his mind when he noticed the emerald leaf'd trees ahead of him had been festively decorated with long, white streamers. This had to be the right place. Ael slinked away from the river and towards the epicentre of the promised festivities. No tree had escaped whomever it was that had done the decorating. As he moved further, following the riverbank, he spotted what was sure to be the ceremony's staging area. Near the riverbank began several rows of what looked to be benches. Even at this early hour he could see people scurrying about the area, making preperations, trying to arrange seating and working on further decoration of the area. A few select people were dashing madly about from place to place with armsfull of various blossoms, some in pots, others simply twined into bundles. As he watched from his vantage point, the lavish potted flowers were being deployed in various places around the area that had been set aside for the actual ceremony. Much to his surprise, one lone figure had actually climbed a nearby tree and was busy trying to entwine some of the blossom stems through out its branches. Elsewhere, someone was busy working on hanging the brillant white and brown banner of Ascension on a nearby house. Running a hand through his dark brown hair, he wondered if they were behind schedule, judging from the frenzied pace at which they were working.
With a quick glance around, Ael spotted his perfect perch for this morning. Nearby was an old, streamer laden oak tree, its branches drifting lazily out over the water of the river. Content with his discovery he slipped over to the massive oak, slinking under the shade of its leafs. Streamers dangled a fair ways down from the branches. Far enough down to brush his face as he approached the trunk of the oak. Gentlely rolling one between his thumb and finger he realised the white streamers were actually woven out of a soft silk. As if to tease him for his discovery, a soft breeze swept across the river causing the streamers to sway outwards as they rode the wind. The streamers rippled like water in the air as the breeze caressed them. Several of them persisted in drifting lazily into his face, tickling his skin and ruining the otherwise beautiful display they were putting on. Seeking escape from the streamers, he took a seat at the base of the tree, leaning back into it with a thankful sigh. It'd been a fair walk all the way to Rylestone from Camelot and he was grateful for a chance to get off of his legs for a bit. As he crossed his legs and put his arms behind his head his roman leather armour creaked as if to agree with his sentiments. Much to his satisfaction he noted he could see the entire ceremony quite well from this vantage point. Although there was no way he'd be able to hear so much as a word of it at this distance. Not even if they yelled the vows.
"Ah ha!" a voice startled him even as a weight suddenly struck him in the side, plowing him over onto the grass. Before he could even get a handle on what had happened he found himself pinned to the ground.
"Aurora." he accused as he regonized the piercing blue eyes he was staring up at. The mistress of the Guild of Shadows had easily taken him completely by surprise. He hadn't heard so much as a rustle of grass at her approach, it was unnerving. Unlike himself she was favouring a simple cut green tunic and brow leggings, with no cloak to interfere. Her usual tomboyishly short dark hair looked as if it had rebelled against the comb this morning.
"I thought I might find you here." she pronounced, satisfied with her deductive skills as she grinned impishly down at him. She was straddling him and pinning him with her hands on his shoulders. But he knew she lacked the weight to truely keep him pinned in that fashion if he really made a move to get her off of him.
"Get off of me." he stated flatly, giving her a chance before he removed her himself. Being pushed over onto his back had pulled his cloak taunt underneath him, resulting in an uncomfortable amount of pressure around his neck from its collar. In addition he had landed rather uncomfortably on one of the oak tree's roots.
"I thought you said we were friends?" she pouted as she stared down at him, leaning her face a bit to close to his for comfort as she tried to glean an answer. She'd been acting like she was without a care in the world since he'd relunctantly accepted her friendship.
"We are. Now get off me before I remove you." he warned. In the back of his mind he wondered how Aurora, being such a high ranking member of the Guild of Shadows, got away with swapping moods from a serious woman to a playful girl at the drop of a hat when it tickled her fancy.
"Spoilsport." she accused, rolling off of him. But only part of the way as she rolled onto her side with her head on his arm.
"All the way off." he pointed out gruffly.
"Came to see the wedding?" she asked, changing the subject. He'd learned that whenever she was doing something he objected to in this fashion, she'd change the subject so he'd put up with her position a little bit longer.
"Aye, what did you think I came for?" he sighed, letting her be for a moment anyway. Though he should probably stop letting her think her ploy would work on him all the time before it became a habit for her.
"Sunshine? Fresh air?" she offered.
"A moment's peace?" he countered.
"Hmph." she grunted, finally sitting up and releasing him.
"Why are you here?" he asked as he too sat up. Getting a foot under him he got to back his feet in order to free his cloak properly before it choked him. Brushing dirt off himself absently, he gazed down at Aurora, who was still sitting on the grass before the oak tree staring up at him.
"Because you are." she answered in a tone that said she thought he was an idiot for even having to ask.
"Don't you have something more important you could be attending to?" he responded as he reclaimed the seat at the base of the oak tree he had to begin with. Making sure he didn't sit on his cloak.
"Not really, no." Aurora said as she crawled over and mimic'd his posture, sitting beside him and leaning against the wide trunk of the oak tree with her arms behind her head. "Are you really not going to go over there and talk to them?" she asked suddenly, swinging back to her serious persona.
"Nay, this is fine for now." he replied as his eyes once again drifted back towards the distance wedding preperations.
"You sure?" she persisted, her blue eyes suddenly fixing on his face intensely.
"Aye."
"Alright then.." Aurora accepted, her voice falling off into a quieter tone. Without another word she slinked over closer to him, slipping an arm through his and resting her head on his shoulder before she too cast her eyes over towards the wedding area.
"Aurora.." he warned as her habit of being uncomfortably familiar with him resurfaced yet again.
"Just for today, alright?" she asked quietly, not taking her eyes off the preperations going on in the distance.
"Fine." he sighed, letting her be. Whenever she spoke in that tone it felt like the next negative word out of his mouth would somehow shatter her feelings. Whether he liked it or not, she often won these little duels more then lost them once she started using that tone of voice.
"It's nice isn't it?" she asked in distant voice.
"What is?" he replied, answering a question with a question.
"A wedding," Aurora said.
"Whatever you're thinking, stop thinking it." he warned, fearing where her train of thought was going now.
"Silly, what did you think I was going to do? Run down and catch the bouqet?" she chided him.
"You wouldn't." Aelhaeran tensed, turning to look down at her. He honestly wouldn't put it past her.
"Of course not, I'm already married." she turned and grinned mischeviously at him, referring to the cover identity as his wife she'd used at Lord Hawktorn's banquet. Or rather, the cover identify as her husband that she'd pulled on him without warning at the banquet.
"We're not married." he stated darkly as he gave her a flat look.
"Now now dear." she chided, mocking him. "We'll talk about it later."
"We're NOT married." he repeated with more convinction as his irritation with Aurora began to rise.
"Shhh!" she chastised, putting a finger to her lips for emphasis before reaching up with the same finger and pushing his head away from her. Turning his eyes back towards the wedding area. "Its starting."
"We're not married." he muttered one last time under his breath as he turned his attention back towards the area of the wedding.
Back towards the wedding of two of his dear friends.

As Milric walked her down the stairs, she could feel the excitement stirring around them. True, it was just a wedding, but the guild coming together was a large event. They didn’t always have time for one another, especially as of late, so this was a double treat. Heady scents and aromas hit her nostrils as she and Milric arrived on the main floor of the house. Here and there were folks she’d never seen before, scurrying about and making sure everything was ready.
They stepped outside and the early morning light dazzled her with its brilliance as she lifted a hand to shield her eyes. Blinking away the bright light, she was finally able to focus on the area about her and Predian’s home and smiled softly at the preparations. A few of her guildmates had gone out of their way it seemed to decorate Rylestone with streamers and all sorts of varied flowers in pots and woven into the very tree branches. She felt touched that her friends cared so much about her and Predian’s happiness. Most of course didn’t realize the recent heartaches and the near loss of the friar, the only came for the happiness and celebration. The knight at her arm gazed about and she almost thought she saw a warm smile as he shared a moment in their happiness. An enigma always, that one would be, she realized. Very few knew the truth of Milric’s past, his present, his entire existence. With a gentle squeeze, she let him know she was ready to continue, and they made their way down the stairs.
All around her the guild banners of Ascension fluttered in the gentle breeze, making her smile even brighter. “Looks bloody better than The Court’s,†she teased, nudging the stoic paladin at her side. A soft grunt was her only answer and she laughed. Down near the river, she could hear the sounds of the minstrels playing some sort of Gaelic tune they’d learned, hoping to surprise her. She didn’t have the heart to tell them they’d learned a birthing song, and a war march, it sounded well enough and no one else realized. Her eyes danced as she saw Vektar, Graver and Seymoura playing their instruments under the shade of a tree nearby. A glance about her and she saw more faces she recognized that were making their way to the benches as she appeared from the house. Down below at the end of a long white runner was Landric talking softly to Predian. He hadn’t seen her yet, waiting for her there and she took the time to admire the man she was about to marry for the second time.
Though his hair and beard were silvered, there was an aura of youthfulness about him, perhaps in the crinkle at the corners of his eyes when he smiled. Dark brown eyes that returned your gaze and a warmth to his features that drew a person in. He was decked out in his finest, a deep blue tunic and black breeches tucked into a pair of polished boots. His hands were so used to holding a staff that she watched even then as he struggled to find a comfortable place to rest them. In and out of his pockets they went, clasped in front, clasped behind and she stifled a soft chuckle. Standing at his side, looking a bit exasperated was Krendle as he patted him again on the back and she could see a glint of gold in his hand as he was surely assuring Predian that he did indeed have the ring.
Scattered throughout the benches were the rest of her guild family. There on one side was Rharan with Sabreen, and their twins sleeping peacefully on a blanket under a close tree. His arm tight around his wife, he nodded to Threnn with a gentle smile. Athelston and Gardan were situated on the other side of the row, both looking rather upstanding for once. Vocca, Cerisdor, Merdinus and some of The Court were seated throughout the crowd, guild colors of brown and soft tan dominated the crowd. Here and there were other colors, other guilds and her heart was touched at each and every one. A slow hush settled in as she took slowly moved to the end of the aisle, the breeze catching her waves of hair and tumbling them about her as if a veil. Graver caught her eye, and with his nod, the three began to play the march they’d chosen out for her. To her surprise, it was completely perfect. A soft blending of the traditional Albion wedding march touched with the trill of Graver’s flute as he added in a Gaelic rendition.
At that moment, Predian turned to see Thrennoadae standing there, and she could see the hint of tears in his eyes as his gaze fell upon her. Her breath caught in her throat as all the love she had for him welled up inside her and threatened to burst forth. She forced the butterflies that invaded her stomach down and smiled up at Milric next to her.
“I’m ready,†she whispered softly, and the knight smiled.
“Of course you are Threnn,†and he turned to her and offered her a gallant bow. As if the moment was meant to be, as the knight in his gleaming armor began the slow walk down the aisle preceding her, a stray beam of sunlight caught his breastplate and almost illuminated the man with its touch. Thrennoadae chuckled softly to herself and shook her head. “But o’ course.â€
Milric reached the end of the aisle, and with a graceful precision he made a bow to Predian, and then took his place as Thrennoadae’s protector. Another nod of Graver’s head, and the music changed again. This time into a sweeping, lulling sound that whispered through the crowd and hung upon the air itself. The flowers that decorated the trees above the aisle shivered, and a soft shower of petals rained down as the Celt started her slow walk down to the man she loved. A delicate halo of petals tumbled through her hair, and brushed against her soft shoulders as she continued to walk, and she could almost see the sly smiles play across three minstrel’s lips. She mouthed a soft thank you, and hoped the sparkle of tears in her eyes showed the depth her appreciation.
And then, she stood next to him, her Predian. Her hand actually trembled as she reached out to clasp his, tucking the small bouquet of white and yellow iris’s in her other hand. “I love you,†he couldn’t help but whisper.
“And I lo’e ye,†she replied. A soft clearing of the throat brought their attention back to Landric who looked a bit flushed to be in front of so many people.
“You two will be the death of me,†he whispered to them, but the warm smile on his lips belied the words. In his hands he clasped a book, and with a few shaking fingers, he parted the pages and opened to the one he had marked.
“My dearest friends, we gather here today to witness the union, the reunion, of two of our most treasured friends. We come together as witness, as partakers, as companions as they restart their journey together and we shall hope and pray for the strength of this joining. May the mistakes of the past be remembered, but the pains be forgotten.†His voice was clear and filled the small area, the joy in his eyes a testament to what he felt.
Predian clasped her fingers to his, and she could feel his eyes upon her. She squeezed gently and smiled back before Landric’s voice came again. “To walk the path of life with another, to share its trials and tribulations with someone that is your partner is what many hope to obtain. Some seek it and never find it. Some find it and never realize it. Others find it and let it slip away for one reason or other.â€
“The two before us now sought it and realized it. They also let it slip away once before. Today the come here and vow to the world that they shall keep it and one another for always. Is there any truer testament of love than to find it again once it was lost?â€
The cleric’s fingers flipped the page, and he shifted from foot to foot before continuing. “Let us continue with a prayer.†As the heads bowed across the crowd, there was one that did not. Hidden under the thick shade of an elm tree, Kaidric watched the ceremony unfolding before him. Things inside him were confused, a jumble, and he loathed a part of himself. Yet, he could not escape the need, the want he had for the woman marrying his brother.

The messenger was at his whit's end.
He had endured the path through Lyonesse guarded by the statuesque Telemons, passed the house of the undead Pikemen and ran for his life near the cottage of the infamous Pygmy Goblins.
He was now in the deepest parts of the forsaken land, the place where you die quickly and get pulled into the waters by all manner of evil.
All of a sudden he saw a sitting figure in the lea of a monolith. Wearily he approached placing his feet carefully to avoid making any noise.
The robed figure took a long swig from a jug he had then let out a tremedous belch - scaring all of the animals nearby. Startled by a grouse flying by him the messenger ducked, and looking up he saw the end of a crackling staff.
'What's your business lad' the robed man asked.
'A message for Pedevere Lord Mage' the young man stuttered.
'Mage - hah' and the man lifted his robes to show his battle scarred leather. 'Pedevere is over there' he pointed with his staff.
The messenger rose and peered into the mist. Then he saw the man he was after. Lying face down in the mud, a woman walking around him kicking his lifeless form.
'But he's dead - we must help him' and the messenger want to draw his blade.
'Easy lad' the Friar said 'You don't want to go upsetting Morgana' If possible the messenger paled even more. 'She'll tire of him in a few minutes and I'll pop down there and pull his spirit back. Now what's this message?'
The young man pulled a scroll from his pack 'A wedding invite. The Lord Predian is marrying'
'Off with ye lad then' the Friar said and thankfully for both of them the messenger began his precarious journey home.
As he burned the message the Friar chuckled. 'Best you don't try and go to Camelot old chum. Not after the last time.' Then seeing Morgana had left the Friar went of to revive his friend.

As Landric finished the humble prayer and heads lifted, Threnn brought her eyes back up to meet Predian’s. A singular smile touched his lips as he gazed at her, and their fingers intertwined more closely. The sound of the river dancing merrily across the rocks, the trickle of water as it whisked past created a soft background of noise as the ceremony continued. The early morning sun was just warm enough without undo discomfort. The day was absolutely perfect.
Yet, as Landric began to speak once again, Threnn felt a chill tickle up and down the length of her spine. Her bared shoulders rippled with gooseflesh and her eyes darted nervously into the gathered assembly. All the faces there were smiling and friendly, yet at her uneasiness the knight Milric tensed a bit. His hand shifted slightly, coming to rest upon his ceremonial blade yet there was nothing outright visible that was causing her distress. She offered the paladin a weak smile, and her eyes came back to rest on Predian’s. He had noticed as well, and his hands clasped hers more reassuringly. “It’s alright love, its alright,†he mouthed silently.
A soft breeze shifted through the village, stirring the flowers where they were bound into the boughs of the trees, as Landric’s warm voice continued. “And so dear friends, let us listen to the words they have chosen to speak to one another this day. Predian, would you speak your vows to Thrennoadae?â€
Predian gazed deeply into Thrennoadae’s eyes, and the world stilled. There was only his soft, warm voice as he spoke to her the words he’d so carefully crafted. In the crowd of onlookers, men and women held hands and drew closer listening to the words of love and devotion whisper from his lips. Thrennoadae felt a tear well up in the corner of her eye, and as she blinked it away, a soft whisper caught at her senses. She thought it someone in the crowd and tried to clear her thoughts and focus on Predian’s voice. She gave him a tender smile, yet that soft, sibilant whisper teased at her ears. Her crystal blue eyes darted away and sought the source of the sound, and she wondered inwardly if anyone else could hear it.
It was then she noticed a dark shape, not too far away but certainly not a part of the festivities. It rested against the trunk of a large maple tree, features obscured by the deep shadows. Her eyes narrowed and she focused on the shadow a bit more. A sudden clarity hit her as the breeze wafted through the leaves, and the shadows parted to reveal his face. It was Kaidric, and his lips were moving in perfect time with Predian’s as he recited the vows of love, of marriage. She froze, and in an instant Predian, Landric and Milric all realized something was wrong.
“Threnn, what is it?†Landric asked in a rush, brow creasing with worry.
She couldn’t answer, her eyes were frozen on Kaidric’s face. He’d ceased speaking when Predian did. Predian himself had moved forward, almost blocking the line of sight between the two, but hadn’t moved far enough. Milric’s gaze was along the crowd, searching again for whatever it was making her uneasy.
The moment hung in the air and she felt pushed under a thin sliver of ice. It was clear, she could see everything moving around her yet she could scream and no one could hear her. She was drowning and all around her seemed to close in tight. Her throat was thick and she suddenly was gasping for a ration of air that would not come. The clear blue of the river twinkled behind Predian… away from Kaidric… away from the crowd of friends and family.
With a blood-curdling scream, she clasped roughly at the fine silk of her gown and lunged away from her husband to be, away from her best friend and ran with all her strength down the river and disappeared from sight.

Thrennoadae had DAMN well better not pull an Ophelia. I'll never get a wedding gig again if brides start hurling themselves into rivers on my watch!!
Nice work, Threnn!

(( Due to me being selfish...I played instead of writing earlier...I believe this fits though, and is harmless enough if not))
Dartel had wandered in late to the ceremony, stationing himself far to the back, well behind everyone and everything. In the days since the ill-fated saving, if you could call it that, of Predian's life, Dartel had gone back over his tomes, over his notes, over every bit of his life nearly as he fought to once more gain control of his thoughts, his emotions.
Despite his hatred for Thrennoadae, Dartel now acutely felt Predian's undying love for her...along with Kaidric's twisted desires. All these emotions made his stomach swallow itself as he felt on the verge of doubling over. A soft, pained moan passed his lips, which was quickly accompanied by a Shh! from the woman seated in front of where he stood. Dartel glared viciously at her, one side of his mouth curling up in a sneer as her eyes opened wide in fear and she quickly turned her back to him, wrapping her arms protectively around herself.
Dartel watched the ceremony intently, hoping beyond hope that upon their joining once more, that he would be released from this hell. He tilted his head curiously as he noticed the distress etched on Thrennoadae's face, turned to follow her gaze and noticed Kaidric off in the distance. Dartel blanched as he saw the brothers' lips moving in unison, mumbling to himself, "Then my worst fears are realized, but thank the Gods only a bit of myself was tied into those magics." He spun his head around, watching Thrennoadae sprint off, a handful of fabric clenched tightly in one hand as she lifted her beautiful dress a bit, allowing her to stride freely as she bounded away.
As the ruckus began, Dartel quietly snuck out the door and made his way down the path to the stablemaster, his fingers nervously turning the silver over and over in his hands as his mind raced.

Its pretty much agreed between the authors that there might be one final bit from Predian, if he chooses.
The rest of the story is wrapped up, and moving on.
But thanks for wanting more.

Behind their home in Rylestone, a covered bench rested on the edge of a hill. It overlooked the river whose soft current had become the sound to which Predian and Thrennoadae slept at night. Thrennoadae and Predian often came to their bench either alone or together. They would sit and think or talk or curl into each other's arms or simply take in the view, the view which touched Thrennoadae’s heart so deeply that she spent days raising the platinum to get it as her own.
Today, the bench was occupied by Predian, and he sat under the fading sun light recalling the events of the past few months. His forehead wrinkled as he tried to count how long had passed since his near marriage to Thrennoadae. It had been long enough for his heart to begin to heal. Long enough for him to return to Rylestone. Long enough for he and his love to find a new bond in friendship.
He could recall vividly the wedding, their second. Thrennoadae was a vision in her gown, her eyes bright with the warmth that touched Predian's heart so often. Milric, stoic as he always was, had himself even smiled upon seeing her. From the start, however, Predian could feel a dark presence. Their entwined souls had made that possible and the friar could feel Kaidric watching. When his bride ran, he knew it was his half-brother's doing. He would have chased her, but he left that task to Milric. Besides, he had no words to offer her. Kaidric's soul had darkened his own, and she felt it. He could not be the man she loved. And so he let her go, he would have to approach her later.
Her absence left a void in his heart, and for a time he stayed in the guild hall, or made camp in Lynn Barfog, where they had first shared their love. He avoided her, in part to spare her pain, and in part to spare his own. But they had gone too long and through too much to let things end. They shared a home, lead a guild, fought side by side and had been part of each other's hearts.
As the time passed, Predian could feel Kaidric's soul fading from his, he was becoming himself again, and it was time to move forward with Thrennoadae. They talked, slowly at first, but over time they found what they needed from each other in friendship. He moved home, making up a bedroom of his own. He still had a softness for her, and he still hurt, but this was the best way, and like all wounds this too would heal.
While Predian's soul healed, Kaidric could feel his half-brother's soul slipping away, leaving him empty once again. Predian knew it too, and that he knew that he would have to set aside his hatred of Kaidric, if he were to ever help him.
-------
Thrennoadae came home that night and found her Friar asleep, on their bench overlooking the river. She stood next to him a moment and took in the view as the moon stood high, reflecting upon the calm river. She draped a blanket over Predian and softly smiled at him. Before returning to their home for her own sleep, she bent over and gently brushed her lips across his cheek, cold from the night’s air.
