Arguyle paced back and forth in his office at the Hall of the Lion. He was visibly agitated, nay, angry. He had heard very disturbing news from the Thidranki and now his blood boiled.
"The bastard! How could he do this? How could he betray us not once but twice! They say that betrayal gets easier the more often you do it. I suppose that is true." muttered the Highlander as he stopped pacing and peered out into the dark.
Then an idea came to him. He sat down and took quill and parchment from his desk drawer. Dipping the quill into the inkwell he put it to paper.
------------------------------------------
Lions of the Shadow,
Attend me immediately. I have a matter the greatest import to discuss with you.
Arguyle
------------------------------------------
Short and to the point. He made the appropriate number of copies and addressed them to Enos, Alakhazam, Kheslyn, Macivor and Velaron.
Calling out to his courier he handed the letters to the man and bade him deliver them with haste.
Then Arguyle MacFadden sat down and smiled. A most satisfied smile.

The young scout was busy purchasing arrows from a merchant in Fortress Sauvage and barely noted the messenger’s approach. Only when the lad cleared his throat and bowed politely did the rogue turn to see the folded parchment in his outstretched had. He recognized the seal of the Lions upon its closure and his eyes grew wide as the delivery boy chimed up.
“Tis an urgent summons for thee, Enos, and from none other than Lord High General Arguyle MacFadden himself. Your bloody in for it now, I should think,†he said with great satisfaction. The messenger disliked his job immensely and always imagined himself at least as skilled as many of the fools he saw called to battle.
The scout gave him a look that would have pierced armor plate from a hundred yards, and then passed by him to take a quick pony to Camelot. And in his mind he wondered, what manner of salutation this might be. He was fighting as bravely as he could on the battlefield of Thidranki, and found great satisfaction in his duty to slay the enemy.
His work had become almost pleasurable with the arrival of a fellow Lion rogue on the field, the lady assassin Kheslyn. As a shadowed pair they had wandered the hills and woodlands of the battleground for several days. They quickly came to sense each other’s strengths and skills and soon more than a few norse, trolls, and Hibernians had perished at their hands. They spoke only rarely, and then only in whispers, but few words were needed for each to know.
But what now of this summons? Had something of his efforts displeased the Lord High General himself? The scout stayed to his own most of the time and rarely spoke much of guild matters and such things. Politics, with their many entanglements, were not to his liking. Perhaps someone had reported a recent bout of drinking or disorderly conduct on his part. Yet the scout knew many within the Lions, most notably Macivor, who drank much more than he.
By the time Enos reached the Lion’s Guildhall he had worked himself into a near frenzy on the matter. He fully expected to be summoned before the Lion’s Council and have his guild cloak snatched from his back. But then, as he rounded into the corridor that fronted MacFadden’s office a familiar shape slipped from a near corner. She too, held a message like his.
“Khes, you too?†he stammered.
She nodded, and somewhat to his surprise, she reached out and took his hand for a moment. Then the both of them knocked on the General’s door. They rapped, not softly nor loudly, but in such a way as to say they had arrived, and would face what may wait together.

Heck, for the right cash, I'll arrange his death to..like..a small skeleton or something.

Arguyle cocked his head toward the door at the sound of the knock.
"Enter!" shouted the Paladin.
He watched as Enos and Kheslyn entered his office. This was the first time for either of them in his presence alone. Try as they may to hide it he could see that they were nervous.
"Well met to both of you. I was hoping that the others would be here by now. Nevermind that though. I have a very...." started the Highlander. Then from in the hallway he heard a loud voice.
"Lord High General! Tis I, Alakhazam the Magnificent! I have come at your behest and beg entrance!" came a shout and a knock from the now closed door.
Arguyle furrowed his brow at the boisterous voice of the Saracen. He nodded toward the door.
"Let the lad in if you please." Arguyle said to Enos.
The Scout moved to the door and swung it open. He motioned to the Saracen to enter and Alakhazam looked taken back by the presence of two others in the room.
"M'Lord, you summoned me and I have come." said the Saracen bowing deeply and spreading his cloak open befor him.
"Enough with the show Alakhazam. I have a matter of great import to discuss with the three of you." said the Paladin flatly.
"As you wish your Greatness." answered the Saracen with a smile.
Arguyle shook his head and began.
"You have all heard of Carrington Whitethorn I presume. He was once a Councillor within the Order and he betrayed us to the Hibernians. He returned and claimed that he did it for noble reasons and after listening to him I believed him and welcomed him back among us. This time as a Squire to Lord Kilaitz.
Recently, however, I have received reports that he has rejoined his Hibernian friends and is currently killing our countrymen in Thidranki." Arguyle became more and more visibly angry as he spoke.
"His forked tongue has filled both my head and heart with lies. He betrays us yet again. This time, however, there shall be no forgiveness for the Traitor. I charge the three of you with bringing me his head. You shall hound his days and haunt his nights. You shall bring death and despair to the Traitor and to his friends. You shall give him no quarter. You shall show him no mercy. Any that are with him are to be considered as marked also. But always, you will seek to kill Carrington first."
Arguyle watched the trio as he finished.
"Do you understand your orders?" asked the Paladin.

(You have to admit, I leveled fast. <wicked grin>)
Carrington nodded as several men and women entered a small hall in an undisclosed location near the borders. Among them, rogues, and rangers...a few champions and heros of deeds. He folded his arms.
"Men, today, many will give their lives. Men seek to destroy the very dream that is the Hibernian philosphy."
He crossed and looked the most seasoned Champion directly in the eye.
"The tyranny that is Albion is once again at work. With each victory we allow them, they become more aggressive. More bloody thirsty to spread their dream of blindness....hypocracy...the elite...and submission."
Several of them spoke up supporting the young man...nae, man now. He cheered as he spoke.
"I killed my former kinsmen last night. And I killed many of them....by myself....with no aid. I thought I would have difficulty in doing so, but when I saw the hatred in their eyes...that BLIND hatred...I knew that WE are doing the right thing."
Carrington raised his arm.
"We will stop the tyranny and blindness shrouded over the people of Albion. And unfortunately, we have to kill many to overthrow the throne."
Carrington raised his sword.
"As a warden, and a proud soldier of Hibernia, I am honored to fight along side of you, to end this ridiculous need of bloodshed...and pointless war!"

Carrington stood on a ramparts of Thidranki...looking out over the river toward the Albion stronghold. He folded his arms.
"Word has almost definately been spread that I lead here. They will send assassins...and soldiers alike, fueled by anger and hatred....as Albion always does. Blind hatred...failing to see the dream."
He sighed and looked down.
"I know their weaknesses. I know their strategy. I know they fight blind...and I know they fight angry."
Carrington touched the hilt of his blade lightly and looked over the horizon as the sun rose.
"They will fight with anger and bias. They will make mistakes. And they will fall by our hand."

"Patience," whispered the assassin. Not one of her greater virtues. Yet what would be most required from her.
Indeed, the lack of it fueled her tendency to stealth into crowds, rather than hunt marks along the outskirts. She rarely ran from combat. When she engaged, someone was going to perish. She was young yet. She'd much to learn. This lesson of patience would be among the hardest. Twas no doubt.
Two other rogues stood beside her in the presence of Lord High General MacFadden himself. Twas no longer only her life to risk. The task the general had presented them would require them to work as a team. She met the eyes briefly of the Saracen scout, her partner in the battleground these last few nights. The process of combining talents and efforts had already begun.
She sank to a low curtsey, following the actions of Alak, her fellow infiltrator, and said quietly,
"Ye've me pledge as well m'lord."

The scout listened intently at the charge put forward by Lord Arguyle MacFadden. He could sense easily, by sight and sound, the anger that boiled within the noble paladin. He had felt similar dislike for certain of the foes he had met in Thidranki, but obviously this Carrington had been placed on a special seat of hatred.
Enos now looked to his two rogue companions. Kheslyn’s fire and determination he already knew, and she would see this task done as surely as he. Then there was Alakhazam Hasim, a man whose name made the scout want to sneeze every time he tried to pronounce it. He struck quite a colorful presence as he vowed his oath to slay the Hibernian traitor. Yet, Enos felt sure that he would back up this display with actions on the battleground.
He noted next Kheslyn’s vow, and so, the scout too, swore to Lord Arguyle, “This vile recount shall know pain and suffering at the point of my arrows and tips of my blades. I shall carve my name in his liver and leave the rest for the dogs and wolves of the battleground.â€
The young scout felt assured as the High Lord smiled now at him and nodded his head in approval. And he felt a surety that the Hibernian known as Carrington would die many deaths at the hands of the Lions…

Emitting a slow and crooked smile, she listened in beneath the windowsill of MacFadden as she spoke. A popular roost she nested when once a Holy Knight, she found comfort in knowing that the hidden alcove in the Red Lion's guildhall still served some purpose.
Gathering her belongings, Anikka donned the shroud of the assassin to find Carrington in Thidranki this eve...to kill him.

Carrington smeared red warpaint over his face and looked to the men around him preparing for war.
"Spare any warriors that wear the colors red and yellow." he commanded, "They have families...a mind of their own....working men."
Carrington folded his arms and narrowed his eyes.
"But for the assassins...cut of their heads and send them back in a wicker basket."
"Most of them will die in futile attempts to destroy us. Remember...those who don plate, spare."
"For the Archers....cut off their hands and spear one of their eyes."
Carrington made the sign of the cross...his faith not shaken...but determined not to follow the political notions and agenda of a clouded Albion. If he had to go through his former realm mates to get to the monarchy...
So be it.

Carrington looked at Toki with a shocked look on his face.
"Actually, that doesn't really surprise me. I know Arguyle knows what's good....he knows what's truly right."
Carrington sighed.
"But, he has a bias against order. There's a giant flow we're all caught up in...I'm just going against it."
Carrington finished up with his war-paint.
"He probably hates me now. But, that doesn't bother me. If I could get him to think about what he's doing for one day...I could died out there today, and be happy."

Arguyle watched as his Assassins walked out of his office and to their destinies. They would be praised as heroes to the Order in the Book Of Records.
He poured himself a glass of scotch and sipped it.
"Carrington Whitethorne, know this, you are a traitor to the Order of the Red Lions. You have deceived and betrayed us for the last time. I have unleashed the hounds of hell upon you and I shall never call them off."
Then Arguyle wondered if he had made the right decision.

Arguyle sat behind his desk and pulled quill and parchment from the drawer. Dipping the quill into the inkwell he wrote.
-----------------------------------
My Dearest Toki,
Seasons have passed and I have long wished to write to you. To talk to you. To hold you. Until now I have been unable to do so.
I write to warn you that there is a traitor among you. Carrington Whitethorne is much worse than a traitor to his country. He is a traitor to his friends. A traitor to his family. He pledges his loyalty and then breaks that pledge as easily as he breathes the crisp air of the morning.
Do not trust this man. Do not think for a moment that he has not a personal agenda in all that he does. He does not understand the concepts of loyalty, honor and friendship. He is loyal only to himself. He honors only his own wants and desires. He throws away friendship at a whim.
I will hunt him. I will send my people to hunt him. We shall not rest until our task is done and our task will not be done whilst he breathes the air of the world. I beg of you to spread word to your folk. For none that harbor this man will be safe from my vengeance.
With undying love,
Arguyle MacFadden
------------------------------------------
Arguyle then rolled the note as tightly as he could. He tied the note to the foot of a specially marked pigeon. The only one in his coop that knows the route to Toki Rainbow. Then he released the bird.
"Fly my little friend! Fly!!"

Carrington stood on the ramparts with two rangers, who were giving him the days facts. Albion would be out in force tonight...and they would need to defend.
Carrington sighed and looked to the air. Something caught his eye.
A carrier bird, flying high over head.
Carrington slammed his spiked club down against the wall of the rampart.
"Shoot it! Shoot it!" he ordered as the archers began drawing their arrows.
Arrow after arrow whished through the air, but to no avail. But, at last by a complete fluke of luck, the arrow caught, not the bird, but the letter, and send it tumbling down into the keep.
Without wasting a beat Carrington scooped up the note as it hit the ground. He immediately recognized the Red Lions seal. He tore it open and read it...fury coming into his eyes as he did.
"DAMN IT!" Carrington shouted angrily, smashing his club into the the wall, "I knew it! I knew he would NEVER be able to see!"
The rangers watched Carrington in horror....having never seen his temper get the best of him.
Carrington yelled in utter fury and sent his spiked club flying over the rampart wall. At last, he began to settle down. He closed his eyes, fuming in anger...grasping to hold his temper.
"......see this is delivered to Toki Rainbow." he said slowly, his voice quivering, "And send her my apologies."
The ranger nodded and took off, letter in hand.
Carrington climbed the ramparts and looked over it.
"So this is going to be how it is, Arguyle MacFadden."
This is war.

It was a raucous night in the Laughing Lion public house, yet MacIvor sat at a small table by himself, sipping away at an ale and staring at nothing in particular. The local Glastonbury constabulary had hired him to help hunt some bandits that were plaguing the area. The hunt had gone very well, and as was his custom Mac decided to spend his wages sampling the region's libations.
His little ritual was interrupted by the arrival of Guildenstern, one of the Red Lions messengers and a man of a barely tolerable disposition at the best of times.
"Hard at work I see, eh Blackthistle?" said Guildenstern, with a smarmy countenance.
Mac ignored the annoying man and continued drinking.
"Always good for conversation, aren't you Macivor. Well, I wouldn't get too comfortable here, I have a message from Lord MacFadden requesting your presence at the Lions guild hall in Camelot post haste."
Mac held out his hand, still staring at nothing. Guildenstern handed over the message, and was promptly dismissed with a rude gesture and a "sod off" from the mercenary.
Mac lazily opened the sealed envelope and read the message. He read with disinterest, wondering what sort of honourable crusade Arguyle MacFadden wanted him to join this time.
The phrase "Lions of the Shadow" caught his eye, and a thin smile played upon Mac's lips. It seemed his lordship MacFadden needed someone to take care of his dirty laundry. Mac was now greatly intrigued.
He finished off his tankard of ale, slamming the empty pewter receptacle on the table's surface. Throwing the barkeep a silver piece, he set off for Camelot, eager to learn just what Arguyle had in store for the Lions of the Shadow.

Arguyle was just walking out of the Hall of the Lion when he saw Macivor enter the courtyard. He stopped and waved the man over.
"Mac, I have received grave news from Thidranki. Reports are that Carrington Whitethorne has betrayed us once again. This time I will have his head. I have dispatched a scout and two assassins to hunt the man down. I want you to oversee the mission. I want you to ensure that I receive his head Macivor." said the Paladin giving the Mercenary a steely glare.

Arguyle gave Mac his orders, then threw the mercenary a leather pouch filled with gold coins. Mac weighed the pouch in his right hand, then, satisfied at the estimated result, gave Arguyle a confident smirk.

Carrington paced back and forth. He was still infuriated by the letter he had intercepted earlier in the day. A young ranger looked at him.
"What do you wish to do, sir?"
"....." Carrington stopped pacing, "Send for Asylyn. But, return soon. I'll need you to send for Tayana....there is something I need to speak with her about."
Carrington folded his arms as the young ranger began to leave.
"Not to worry....I already have the top assassins out for MacFadden. Jander will definately get the job done. If not...I have a proposition for Asylyn."
The ranger nodded and quickly left.
A young champion made his way up to him, "Sir," he asked, "Why do you fight?"
Carrington rubbed his chin in thought for a moment, his insides still bubbling with anger. At last, he answered.
"I am a hypocrite." he muttered, "I say I fight to end this war, when now I am caught up in a personal fued against my former Lord."
The champion tried to comfort him, but Carrington would have none of it.
"And until one of us is dead, it will never end."

Word spread fast throughout Camelot. Whispers on the wind. Always the same two names and eventually a third was added.
Arguyle listened to the rumors for there was much to learned from idle gossip. Rumor had it that Whitethorne sought to send an assassin, perhaps Jander himself, to kill the Highlander.
With a chuckle the Paladin thought.
"Men of greater substance than yourself have sought my doom Carrington. Yet I remain. Send your assassins and I shall send them back to you in a box."

Ayslyn had left some time ago. Carrington wondered about the man that he would send to him. He stared out over the ramparts.
"You leave yourself open Carrington," someone whispered into his ear. "Had I been an enemy, you would most like be dead now."
The elf stood behind him, lithe, and whipcord thin. His blonde hair hung loose, framing his heartshaped face. His blue eyes were cold.

Raelyn strolled up to the door, basket in hand. She'd heard rumors in the City, and wanted to confirm them for herself. As she approached the door she heard voices within and called out her entry.
"NAWG!"
She strode inside and flicked out a cloth and from the basket produced cupcakes and whiskey. She sat saucily on the table and licked off the sweet icing as she eyed the occupants of the room with winks and nods.
"Carrington, my dear, I heard trouble was brewing and it wasn't from the lips of a broken hearted maiden. I'm at your service," she stated merrily expecting a sardonic grin and a charming smile in return.
Carrington turned to her with as solemn a face as has ever been seen on one of her guildmates.

"I'd step back if I were ye, elf. I haven't spilt any blood yet today and I'm gettin' kinda itchy," the heroine warned, eyeing the elf that whispered in Carrington's ear. Twirling her spear, Tayana nodded at the warden. "Ye called, yer lordship? And I'll thank ye to have a care with who yer sendin' out into Thidranki, half the youth of Devr'im are hunting here now, me brother included. I'll take it personal if ye get him killed."

Tayana blinked as the elf seemed to vanish, only to reappear inside of her guard. He caught up her hand, and planted a dry kiss on the back of it. "Ah, the ever lovely Tayana. The lad has nothing to fear from me. My knives are reserved for our enemies."

Velaron was eyeing an elven ranger in caledonia when he saw one of arguyle's fool messengers running around randomly shouting his name, the ranger drew his bow and shot at the messenger, his arrow going through the mans leg. he drew again but by this had given the infiltrator enough time to move to where the archer stood, quickly he sliced through the pointy eared beings neck artery and with ease did a follow-up summersault, using the foroward momentum he developed to drive his swords deep into his enemies belly. he walked off and let his poison finish the job, hearing the elf scream in pain and eventualy die.
quickly he ran to the messenger's side, ahh he remembered this one, the boy seemed to think he was a great fighter of some sort, velaron had seen the young one fight though and it seemed as though he didn't know which side of a sword to hold. "ye bloody fool" he said "i told ye to wait at the keep if'n ye had a message for me, serves ye right. what do ye want?" the boy handed him a letter and then fainted from the pain as some fellow soldiers carted him away to caledonia keep for healing.
--------------------------
Lions of the Shadow,
Attend me immediately. I have a matter the greatest import to discuss with you.
Arguyle
--------------------------
"must be important" velaron thought to himself, "he normaly does not use this kind of a tone in his writing". he sheathed the swords he still held and moved quickly through the shadows toward the portal keep that would take him back to albion.
....................
velaron arrived at the lions compound in camelot and although his body screamed for rest he sought arguyle immediatly. the paladin was in his office reading reports from the battle front but velaron could tell his chief wasn't really paying attention to them, there was something weighing on his mind.
"ye wished to see me m'lord?" velaron spoke softly as was his custom

"Ahh...Velaron. Yes. Carrington Whitethorne has betrayed the Order again. He has taken the trust of his Brothers and Sisters and forsaken it. I have dispatched Assassins to Thidranki to hunt him. I want you to watch for him as he leaves Thidranki. When he does, kill him and bring me his head. Leave no doubt that it was the Order that brought death to the Traitor." said Arguyle.
He then turned back to his maps. As Velaron was backing out of the room Arguyle said, "And Velaron. Macivor will be coordinating the mission. Seek him out of you have need of anything. Do not fail in your task Velaraon. I want Carrington dead."

"m'lord... i do not like to deny your requests but you must allow me time to weigh this command, carrington was like a third brother to kilaitz and i. to even think about killing him is something that i may not be ready to do. i know you feel betrayed by him and i do too, so you must allow me time to think." as velaron spoke these words he knew he risked his place in the order, but carrington was a brother to him, and one simply does not just go out and kill someone like that.
"by the way m'lord, do not mention this to kilaitz for he will surely deny you. he holds the fond memories of carrington and nothing you say or do will change that, i might be able to be swayed but it will probably require some act of carrington directly against me and my brother and no others to happen. he has a quite a few seasons before he will be worthy of battle with me so there is still time"

“Come on Alonwy, Carrington is your honour-kin! You HAVE to go and help him!†the young Celtic woman shouted at the elf who sat in front of the fire showing no signs of moving. She had been trying for the better part of an hour to persuade the woman to come to Carrington’s aid.
Alonwy Sighed heavily. “Anghard, I can not go….â€
“Your are breaking your vows! What good are they if you break them?â€
“There are other vows and bonds that I have chosen to be bound with. My Heart and soul belong to Dunchadt, and I will not kill his friends or brethren any more.â€
“That bloody Highlander.†So saying the young druid spat on the floor. She would not say his name, he had taken her best friend and mentor from her, and she hated him for it. “He’s made you a Traitor! “ And with that, tears in her eyes, she slapped the elfin women, hard.
Standing to her full height, Alonwy drew the young woman into her arms, speaking softly to Anghared “No,he has not. He has completed me. Love is a stronger bond than ever I imagined. And I will not be a traitor to his or my heart ever again.â€
“Carrington is right, the war is pointless, but his approach is wrong,†Alonwy continued,†killing only begets killing. If more could admit their love for others freely, perhaps we would find we have more in common than not.â€
‘I’m going,†The young woman said as she stopped crying but remained hugging her friend.
“As well you should. Follow your heart, as Carrington follows his and I follow mine.†Then she kissed the young Celt on the forehead. “Danu watch over you, Anghard.â€
With out looking back she called out “And you, sister.â€
Then running out the door of the small hut, she whistled loud and long calling her wolf companion to her. “Come on Keno Khan, we have work to do.â€

A dark cloaked figure stealthily trails after Carrington. A glimmer of light reflected off a scythe shimmered as the cloaked figure deftly slices an arrow in two that was aimed at Carrington's back.
He let off a soft, amused chuckle. "Carrington, why am I always watching you back? Well, a Blackblade always gives his word." His voice trails off as he continues to trail behind Carrington ever watchful.

Word had reached Akvad of Carrington's redefection. He sat in his room, lounging in a chair, staring out at the snow that blanked the land outside of the MacAndrew's keep.
He thought back to the words that he had once heard Dahrnkiel say, 'The war will go on until those that wish to end it are dead themselves.'
How true, he thought to himself, that so many try to end the war only to find that in the end they perpetuate it, make it stronger. Evil begets evil. He closed his eyes and listened to the moans of the spirit world.
They had grown louder recently, as if swelled by new and stronger voices. Akvad could not deny that the crypts of Albion has become packed with the undead, restless and angry. Soon they will flow over here, as they have in Avalon, he mused, then no one will know peace. Only a few holy spots will be left alone, until they too are overwhelmed. The veil will not save the elves, or the cold the norse. All lands will be covered.
Poor misguided Carrington, Akvad thought, he does what he believes is right. How many times has he cursed the death that follows him, not knowing that they are caused by him.
Akvad twists in a spike of pain. The agony of that night has not completely been forgotten, and it reminds the saracen of it frequently.
With the pain come flashes of blood, and a look of Carrington's face, white with a spray of red blood accross it, horrified at what he had done. There was hope for him then, Akvad thought, but where has that hope gone?
Dunchadt will be crushed, he stood up for the whelp against his friend Arguyle, for Alonwy and for a believe that Carrington deserved a chance to prove himself again. Akvad could picture the mercenary's face turning bright red, he eye darkening menacingly at the news. But neither of them would harm Carrington now, Dunchadt would not kill his love's kin, and Akvad would honour Dunchadt's promises like his own.
Lord Arawn help him if he hurt that girl though, or hurt those under the protection of the Tower, then there would be no mercy, no pity, no second chances.
Akvad leaned back into the chair and sighed... what was Carrington up to...

"Carrey, you look like hell," Chanell said as she walked in the room and saw Carrington sitting in the corner. The other NAWGs in the room snickerd. They had thought the same thing, but with the look on Carrington's face, they hadn't dared say a thing.
"Arguyle's sent assasins after me," he said to her.
Chanell stood there a moment in shock.
"When did you find out?"She asked him.
"Last night."
"L-last night? And you didn't tell me?"
"I didn't want you to worry," he told her.
"Did you not think I would find out?" Chanell told him.
He looked up at her, blankly. The other NAWGs in the room went about their business, pretending not to listen.
"Don't worry about it though, I've taken care of it." He said to her.
Chanell looked at him and arched an eyebrow. He knew she wasn't going to drop the subject until he told her. She couldn't belive what she was hearing. The lowless of such an act. Was /this/ what Albion considered "civilized"?
She looked at the other NAWGs and knew this couldn't be discussed in front of them. Not now anyway.
"Carrington...kitchen...now.." Chanell walked over to the kitchen door. Carrington looked up at her with a shocked expression on his face, and then walked into the kitchen with Chanell following.
"Sit," she said, pointing to a chair and sitting in the one next to it.
"Do you have any idea what you have just done?" she asked him.
"I know Arguyle, this won't end until one of us is dead," he told her.
"This isn't about just you anymore. Don't you understand that? I'm sure Arguyle has declared war on anyone who even knows you. Don't you dare even /think/ of leaving, Mr. Whitethorn. You pledged your loyalty to me and I plan to hold you to that. The second you stepped through those guild hall doors, you became our family. This family sticks together and stands up for one another. All you have to do is ask," Chanell took a deep breath and looked at Carrington. "Had you come to me with this last night, we could have come up with a more suitable solution. But, what's done is done and we'll have to work with that."
"It's not done yet," Carrington said as he looked at her.
"Not done yet?" Chanell asked.
"No."
Chanell sighed with relief.
"Carrey," she said as she placed her hand on his, " I know nothing of your politics, but do you trust me?"
He looked up at her and nodded, "Aye, I trust you with my life."
"Good," she said simply. She looked intently into his eyes, "Call off your plan."
He sat there a moment, a look of fear, and anger, and shock on his face. After a moment he nodded, "Aye."
He quickly rose from his seat.
"I'll be back."
"Where are you going?" Chanell called after him. But it was too late, he was already gone.
Chanell sat back in her chair and sighed.
'Carrington Whitethron, what am I goign to do with you.'

To Kill A Carrington......

Enos stood talking quietly with Kheslyn as the two awaited the arrival of the portal mages in Fortress Sauvage. Soon they would be off to the battleground of Thidranki to slay the wretched traitor Carrington. There were already reports within guild conversations that he had been spotted and slain by one of the Lion’s young necromancers, Khrell. This did not concern the scout, for he knew that evil always seems to find a way to restore itself. And if this Carrington had been slain, he would likely need to be killed many times to rid the earth of his influence.
The rogue pair were so busy discussing poisons and arrows and how best to inflict the most pain upon the Judas-Celt that they did not note the approach of the elder cleric. He nearly scared them out of their leggings when first he spoke.
“Ah, a brave pair off to the Lion’s business I see!â€
They turned in unison to see yet another of the elder Lion’s looking down at them. The cleric Jothan MacLachlan, smiled warmly as he stepped forward to shake the scout’s hand and bow politely to the young assassin. As seemed to be the reaction of many ladies, Kheslyn nearly fainted at the sight of his handsomeness.
“Greetings master Jothan,†they each said together.
The master cleric looked at the both of them with an expression of great concern and the hairs on their necks began to tingle as he spoke to them.
“I understand Lord Arguyle has tasked the young rogues of the guild with an important mission. Ye would do well to steel yerselves for what might be ahead. Especially you, young Kheslyn. No woman is safe when it comes to facing Carrington. His silver tongue has swayed and mislead the hearts of many a lady here in our fair Albion. No doubt, even now he has rallied the hearts of many moose-women to stand at his side in Thidranki.â€
“Mark well my words. He will try to trick you and beguile you, just as he now fools the Hibernians. That is to be expected, as everyone knows many of them are slow of mind, barely smarter than trolls. And given Carrington’s way with words he will certainly have the elf-ladies all fawning at his side by now.â€
“Do all of us a favor, and kill him on sight. And if ye take him prisoner cut out his tongue before he can use it to lead away your hearts as he has swayed those he now calls countrymen.â€
The master mages now passed silently near where they were standing and the expression on the cleric’s face brightened.
“Ye will now be off to the battleground. Always remember that evil never triumphs in the end, and Carrington’s treachery is evil incarnate. Ye will succeed my friends. Yer skills are greater than his, and our god is greater than theirs. Be well… and prosper on yer mission.â€
The last they saw of him was the blinding glare of the mage’s spell, as the cleric departed for battles they would not know, and they went forth on their mission to administer justice for Albion…

Arguyle stared coldly at Velaron as he heard his words. He was not one to give orders often but when he did he expected them to be followed.
"This is not a request Velaron. This is an order. Choose now what side you fight for. Do you fight for the honor of the Order or do you fight to protect the traitorous dog? We are at war. Carrington is the enemy. A dangerous one at that. He knows out tactics, our strengths and our weaknesses. The longer he lives the more Albions die." said the Paladin very matter-of-factly.
As he was about to continue a knock came from the door.
"Enter." called the Highlander.
A lean man entered. Bearing the livery of a courier for the Order. He had in his hand a letter.
"M'Lord, news from Thidranki." said the Courier bowing deeply.
Arguyle took the letter and opened it. He read the words carefully and a smile spread across his lips.
"Well, it seems that our new ally Arawn has already begun to earn his keep. Khrell, the young Necromancer, found Carrington in Thidranki. Carrington is dead." said Arguyle rather gleefully.
Then a more serious visage came across his face.
"No doubt some foul Hibernian magicks will bring him back from the dead but he now sees what his insolence and traitorous ways bring to him. The game has begun."
Then Arguyle looked at Velaron. He was still standing there listening to every word.
"What are you still doing here Velaron? You have preparations to make. Be to it lad." commanded the Paladin.

Ishish stormed into the Lions guildhall just in time to see Macivor leaving.
"What goes on here!" she shouted.
Seeing the heavy bag filled with coin at his waist Ishish grabbed Macivor's arm in a steel fist.
"Its true then is it? The High Lord General has put a price on Carrington's head?"
Ishish tore the bag of coin from Macivor's belt roughly, holding it up to his face.
"And you are going to do his bidding! Is there enough gold here to kill a friend?" Ishish shouted.
"Carrington may be misguided but he has a good heart. He was one of the few who looked out for me when I came to this land. He and I and the old norseman Questor fought side by side. I will not stand idley by and watch this murder!"
Ishish turned to go, but quickly turned back to face the mercenary.
"How much gold will it take for you to kill me Macivor?"
With that Ishish left the Hall of Lions.

Carrington stood on the ramparts of the Hibernian keep in Thidranki.
"How is your wound sir?" a young soldier asked.
"A mere scratch. They think because they outnumbered us last night that they can celebrate it today. But know this...we'll be ready tonight."
The soldier nodded.
"I hear you killed many Brits last night...most notably a paladin and a wizardress at once? I'm impressed, Carrington."
"One can do amazing things when fueled by anger. Arguyle thinks he can win a single skirmish and send his assassins, and call it an honorable win. We'll see about that when they're all lying dead...at their FAILED attempt to take my life."
Carrington turned to Tayana.
"Ah, yes...Tayana...I called you hear to tell you that the Order of the Red Lions have betrayed our cause. They may, and should be killed on sight. They are no different from any Albion fool, and are a danger to our dream. If they are seen, I ask you command your force to destroy them."
Carrington turned to the man of the shadows.
"Come....we'll talk alone."

Secaran sighed softly and released Tayana's hand. "Aye, perhaps we can continue later." he smiled, briefly before turning to Carrington. The warmth that had flooded into his eyes as he talked to the heroine vanished, replaced again with the ice cold killer's eyes. He bowed, barely, to Carrington. "At your service."

Mac watched with a disinterested expression on his face as Ishish threw the gold pouch at his feet in disgust and stormed out of the Lions guild hall.
In truth, he was hurt that Ish would suggest that he would even consider killing her for any sum of coin. He did not blame her, his aloof behaviour did nothing to convince anyone that he was incapable of such a thing.
The mercenary kept his feelings closely guarded. He strongly believed that to show emotion was a weakness, something to be used against you. Yet he considered the brash saracen armswoman to be his best friend, maybe even a sister.
He thought about the task charged to him. Was it a smart move to get involved in MacFadden's personal vendetta? And what of Carrington? He had been a friend of Mac's in days past.
Mac bent down to collect the bag of coins. He would follow through on his contract. He had no personal desire to see Carrington dead, yet both men had changed so much since they last fought as comrades that he would feel no remorse if the young man were to perish by his hand. This was purely business.
He hoped Ishish would understand. But unlike the simple mercenary, her goal was not the mere acquisition of wealth. She was driven by dark motives, by a hatred and desire for vengeance of her own.

Raelyn had made him feel better. It was odd how a single warm smile could change your feelings. He turned back to the assassin and folded his arms. He led him away from the bustle, into a dark corner. He lowered his voice.
"There is a mass of liqour and alcohol in a large storage area in the Guild-hall of the Order of the Red Lions."
He narrowed his eyes and pulled a vial of menacing looking fluid from his cloak, shaking it in the air lightly.
"My original plan was to have you poison it, but I have a new one..."
He beckoned him closer.
"What I want you to do requires two parts. I want you to infiltrate the storage area with this poison. However...do not apply it to the drinks. I want you to make it 'appear' that you have poisoned their water supply, as well as alcohol."
Carrington gave a satisfied smirk.
"Arguyle is much to clever to fall for a poison...so, that's why the farce. They will soon find that it is not poisoned, and go back to drinking and distributing. Then, the next night, I want you to infiltrate again. See me before then and I will give you several flasks of lethal poison. One drink will debilitate their bodies to a rasping sickeness...but will not be fatal. I don't want to have to kill them...but the next time, if Arguyle does not call them off, they will all die."
Carrington raised an eyebrow, a satisfied look on his face.
"One heel turn deserves another. Can you do this?"

Secaran chuckled softly. "You're a devious man Whitethorne. Make sure that deviousness never harms Hibernia, and we'll get along fine." He took the vial and vanished.
***
Infilitrating the guild hall was child's play for the nightshade. He had actualy been there on several occasions prior on business for Ayslyn. He dribbled a bit of the poison on the lip of the well, and poured the rest of the vial into a nearby ale cask, which he left open. Then he sat, and he waited. Soon enough he heard the steps of a guard on the stairs. He dropped the lid of the cask on the ground, cursed, and then dashed the now empty vial on the ground next to the well.
The guard rounded the corner only to see an elf moments before he was slammed back into the wall. The elf vanished up the stairs. After examining the storeroom, the guard reported that the supplies had been poisoned by a hibernian sabatuer.

Arguyle worked his way back through the Hall of the Lion and as he approached the winding stairs leading to the offices on the second floor he heard the heated exchange between Ishish and Macivor. More of a tirade on Ishish's part actually as Macivor didn't reply at all.
Arguyle thought about Ishish's words. They slapped him in the face like a steel gauntlet. Was he making the right choice? Had Carrington really betrayed the Order? Was this a personal vendetta aimed at the man because he was angry that Carrington hadn't come to him to ask for his help and to explain things?
"What are you doing Carrington? Why did you feel that you couldn't talk to me?" whispered Arguyle.
As Macivor walked from the building Arguyle made his way to his office and walked to a bare wall. Looking to ensure that the door was closed securely and the drapes window still shuttered he reached to the ceiling and deftly moved his hand until he heard a click. Then he turned and watched as a single board rotated in the floor in the opposite corner. Just in front of the fireplace. He walked to the area and took a deep breath.
Was he sure that this was the right thing to do? Was he making a mistake in revealing his deepest secret?
Shaking his head he knelt to the ground and withdrew a teakwood box. Walking to his desk he placed the box sqaurely in the center and placed a tiny key in the lock. The top of the box opened with a creak and Arguyle could smell the musty air from inside the box expel.
This box and it's contents had been handed down from generation to generation to the heads of House MacFadden. From father to son it passed. Arguyle's father had given him the box nearly 20 years ago. He had never opened it. But the contents of it were burned into his brain.
Inside were 2 simple items. A signet ring bearing the image of a lone acorn. Beside the ring was a stamp with the same insignia. Arguyle almosted gasped at the sight of the two artifacts. Until now he had not really known the truth of the Great Secret. Now it was staring him squarely in the face.
The insignia was that of an ancient Hibernian house. House Creel had served Hibernia faithfully for thousands of years until one day three hundred years ago an Albion Army led by none other than Uther Pendragon rode into the heart of Hibernia. To the gates of Tir na Nog they came. Death and destruction was all that was left in their wake. The Empress called her people into the mountain home. She ordered the gates locked magically so as to aid in holding off the marching army. As the mages were completing the last of the rituals to seal the gates shut there was a trumpet call coming from the direction of Mag Mell.
Smoke and flames could be seen from Tir na Nog as Mag Mell burned. The thunder of hooves made the mountain itself shake as the Albion army raced over the hils separating Tir na Nog and Mag Mell. The standard of Pendragon, a Red Dragon, flapping in the wind as the army rode hard to the Hibernian capital. For days the Albions laid seige to the city. The grounds were stained with the blood of Albion and Hibernian alike but the Albion army seemed to be unending.
Everyday it seemed that more and more appeared to aid in the destruction of Tir na Nog. The great siege rams pounded the gates. Buckling them at times. Only the powerful magicks of the Enchanters and Druids working together was able to keep the doors reinforced enough to hold. Catapults rained fiery pitch into the city. The brave warriors of Hibernia fell in waves of flame and oil. The death screams heard throughout the city.
Then on the 8th day of the siege there was a shout from outside.
"Creel!!! For Hibernia and the Empress!!" came the battlecries.
The Empress watched as from the north came what appeared to be a thousand riders crashed into the flanks of the Albions. Rangers rained arrows into the ranks of Albions soldiers felling them by the scores.
"Creel!! Creel!" came the shouts.
Then she saw the man who had borne her honor for many years. Torlo Creel with his flaming red hair rode hard into the Albions. He swung his great Celtic Spear from atop his horse slicing men in half as he rode hard for Uther Pendragon.
"Creel!! Creel!! came the shouts.
Then the Empress heard it. The shouts of women mixed in with the men. She looked as closely as her elven eyes would allow and she saw them. The women of House Creel bearing swords and bows. Felling enemies and being felled alongside their men.
"Creel!! Creel!!" came the shouts.
Feeling her spirits rise and rage the Empress called for the magicks on the gates to be released and the Hibernian's inside to charge. As one they crashed into the Albions. Hibernian arrow and sword drove deep into the heart of the Albion army. Suddenly she could hear a trumpet sound 2 sharp blows. Then the Albions began to fall back.
Retreat?
The Albions turned and rode as hard as they could back toward Druim Ligen. They were running back to the frontier. They were retreating.
She glanced a green and white clock in their midst. It bore a lone acorn on its surface. It was a woman. She shouted for rangers to bring her back. Suddenly armored men surrounded the woman and subdued her. Then she saw Uther himself lay the bound woman across his horse and ride north.
As the Empress surveyed the battleground she found the same cloak as that of the woman lying on the ground time and time again. Finally, she came across the one she was looking for. Torlo Creel lay face down in the mud and blood. A dozen arrows in his back and an Albion pike driven through his heart. His bloodstained cloak, bearing a lone acorn, whipping in the wind.
Arguyle shook his head bringing himself back to the here and now. He could see the battle as clearly as if he were there. He sat and put his quill to parchment.
--------------------------------
Ayslyn,
I beg your aid. I beg your counsel. What has happened to Carrington? What has happened to me? What can I do to stop this death and destruction?
Ghosts of the past call out to me. Begging me to stop this madness. Faces of the present beckon me to go on. To carry the fight to the enemy.
Speak with Carrington. I must know his intentions. Why does he continue to deceive and betray?
I beg your aid.
I remain,
Arguyle MacFadden
Descendant of House Creel
------------------------------------------
He then dipped the stamp in hot wax and placed sealed the letter with the seal of House Creel.
Then tying the note to his pigeon he sent the bird on its way.

To Kill A Carrington......

Carrington sat in the main hall of the Nawg guildhouse alone. In one hand, he had a flask of some sort of liqour, and in the other hand, he held a golden flower.
He seemed to be preoccupied with something...perhaps drinking away his sorrows for the night.
He put down his flask and nabbed one of his strands of grapes, whom Ishish had got him hooked on, and popped one into his mouth.
He often wondered what others would do in this situation. He had just given orders...but not orders to kill...only contain. To give Arguyle a warning. Whether or not he would get that message, would yet to be seen.
More than likely, it would make him more angry, and Carrington's dream would become more clouded...more and more distant. More imperfect, more hypocracy, and more impossible. He popped another grape into his mouth.
He had just given orders to poison his brothers and sisters. Better that than kill them. He didn't want to fight them. But, then again, maybe it was better off for them to hate him, rather than be stuck on him, and pull the Order's roof in ontop of Arguyle's head. That would never happen.
He began to think over why he gave the order. Why he was paying for such an act.
Was he a coward? Maybe he didn't want to face the Lions on the battlefield. Maybe he was angry. Maybe he wanted to make Arguyle pay for sending assassins after him...who were still hunting him as he sat there.
As far as he cared, Arguyle declared war on him, and it would not be over until one of them apologized and compromised what was in their hearts, or one of them was dead.
He wondered when Chan would return from her errands. He could use some company.

Chanell had spent the morning out at Dun Dagda going over her plans for the Ball with the guards. Things had gone well but she still had doubts about the Ball's success.
Finally coming to the guildhall, she planned to have a nice hot bath and to spend the rest of the day with a book. Walking in the door, she tossed her cloak on a corner chair and set her staff against the wall.
"Carrey!"
She wasn't expecting anyone to be there.
He didn't answer her. He just popped another one of those grapes in his mouth. Taking a deep breath, she crossed the room and sat on the opposite end of the couch.
"Copper for your thoughts," she said as she propped her feet up on him and stealing a grape.

Carrington managed a smile as she entered. She made her way over to him and propped her feet in his lap and stole a grape as she always did. It was routine now...a warm gesture he had just come to expect. He sighed, content for a moment.
"I was just thinking about everything. About what's important to me...and how big of a hypocrite I am for getting involved with this senseless war with Arguyle."
He sighed and layed his hands on Chan's feet.
"Chanell...thank you for helping me through this. I swear I'll make it up to you one day. If I live that long."

Chanell arched an eyebrow and looked at him a moment.
"You're right," she said matter of factly, "you /will/ make it up to me."
He looked at her. That's not her usual answer to that statement and was unexpected.
"And you're right, you are a hypocrite," she said as she stole another grape, "what are you going to do about it?"

Carrington sighed and looked down.
"I just can't answer that yet Chan." he said with a frown, "Arguyle already has assassins out for me...he's paging my friends here, telling them that I can't be trusted..."
Carrington looked Chan directly in the eyes.
"I don't know who to trust. The only person I know I can is you."
Carrington sighed and learned back, his crystal blue eyes fixed on the ceiling.
"Help me think...please."

Chanell got up and walked over the the liquor cabinet. Such a difficult task cannot be taken on without some help. Taking out a bottle of brandy, she resumed her former position on the couch.
She sat there a momemnt and thought.
"What if you just refused to play into his game? He'll expect you to retalliate right? Don't give him the satisfaction, Carrey."
She opened the bottle and took a drink. He looked at her and grabbed the bottle. He sat there with the bottle in his lap and just stared across the room.

Kilaitz listened to Velaron and wasn't surprised at the news at all, "he has ordered me to kill carrington kil, he has ordered me to kill our brother. arguyle told me that i had to choose whether i would fight for the lions or fight for carrington but i don't understand why it's necessary to fight at all"
Kilaitz nodded to his brother and deep inside him he felt a ball of anger rise. calming himself quickly the cleric thought about what he could do to help his younger sibling. "well i think it's quite simple vel, carrington will never see you unless you want him to, you could stand right next to him for quite a while and he wouldn't know it. just make yourself visible to him when he is alone and bow, let carrington decide whether you will plague his existence or remain friends. for myself i refuse to hurt him and arguyle knows there's nothing he can say or do to change that, if he doesn't he's in for a surprise."
he heard overheard ishish yelling at mac down the hall from his quarters where the two brothers sat and smirked at velaron, "it seems we're not the only ones who see this as a black and white issue either, go to cal and keep up your string of killing, when carrington comes i'm sure he'll seek you out whether it be for good or evil purposes."

Carrington popped open the bottle and took a long swig of brandy. He ran his fingers through his hair and glanced back at Chan with crystal blue eyes.
"Rufuse to play eh?" he said quietly, thinking about that statement.
It would work. Arguyle would most likely lose interest in it if he just disappeared from sight.
No...no he wouldn't. Arguyle wouldn't stop until one of them was dead. And hiding would compromise he pride, drive, and determination. He looked down and the bottle, then back to Chan.
"I'll need your company tonight, Chanell."

Chanell stole another grape and tossed it at Carrington; she giggled as she watched it bounce off his head. Taking the brandy from him she stood up.
"I think I'm going to have that bath now."
She made her way up the stairs and made a mental note to lock the door behind her.

"Ah, yes...Tayana...I called you hear to tell you that the Order of the Red Lions have betrayed our cause. They may, and should be killed on sight. They are no different from any Albion fool, and are a danger to our dream. If they are seen, I ask you command your force to destroy them."
He turned away from her to wander off and speak with the elf, the rarely seen Secaran, casually dismissing the heroine. Tayana's eyes narrowed, her grip reflexively tightening on her spear. This was what he had summoned her here for? A waste of her valuable time... As a rule she spared no enemy, for none had ever spared her, and the few she might hesistate to slay were the ones she had met personally. Whether or not an Alb wore the colors of the Red Lions had never mattered to her... though she had checked the bodies of the fallen for them on occasion, as an afterthought.
Watching the traitor walk away, she shook her head. Good intentions or no, he'd betrayed his people, it was unlikely they would forget that. Tayana sighed, an annoyed hiss, and comforted herself with the knowledge that if nothing else, she would at least be able to shed more Albion blood.
((hideously late in the storyline, but i still wanted to respond... and interrupt carrington's attempt to get his groove on ))

Ayslyn sat in his library and re-read the note. "Well at least one of them is willing to think this over." He swirled the small vial containing the sample of the poison that Secaran had saved for him. "This is nasty stuff. It won't kill, no. But I wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of it either. We need to end this."
He took pen, ink and paper and began to write.
Lord General Arguyle,
It saddens me that things have come to this state of afairs. While I share Carrington's desire to end the war, I too must question some of the means used to do so. Know, however that my first loyalty must be to the people of Hibernia.
I suggest that you, Carrington and I sit down to talk in a place of my choosing. I vouce for your safety during the talks, and for as long as it takes you to return home from them.
Give the messanger your answer.
In Hope of Peace,
Ayslyn Greenwillow, Champion of Rhiannon.
He rolled the parchment, sealed it with the willow on green wax, and handed the scroll to Secaran.
"See that Arguyle gets that. I need to talk to young Carrington."
***
Ayslyn stepped into the Nawg guildhouse.
"Your pardon, but I have a question for Carrington that can not wait. Lad, are you truly dedicated to peace, and would do anything to achieve it?"

Carrington nodded as Chan went upstairs to bathe. He yawned and draw his blade...while he didn't use it, he carried it with him, just in case. He ran his finger along the edge...still sharp.
He looked around and picked up an orange from a bowl on the table in front of him. He tossed it up in the air and rolled it over his fingers mindlessly for a moment...a fine distraction.
Holding the blade straight up with his left hand, he took the orange in his right and and tossed it against the blade. Almost immediately the orange split completely in half, perfectly, landing on the table. He grabbed one of the halves and began to eat.
Then it hit him.
He was too full of himself. Why did he think he could end this war? Why? He thought back at how quickly he had dismissed Tayana. Why should she care what he wanted? He frowned at himself. Maybe he was just a fool.
Maybe, he thought, maybe he should slow down and take a look at what he cared about, that was close to him....and not so much about dreams.

Arguyle heard the sound of the alarm from within the Hall of the Lion. Springing from behind his desk he grabbed his sword and shield and headed down the stairs. He followed the sound to the store room and found the guard there looking at the casks.
"What happened here?" demanded the Paladin.
"An elf M'Lord...he...he..well...he was fiddlin' wit da kegs methinks. I heard a crash an' came directly down 'ere. He shoved me inta da wall and fled. But he left behind 'is flask and da open cask der." said the guard.
Arguyle touched the liquid on the lip of the cask and put it to his lips. Spitting the liquid out he roared.
"Jothan!! Get Jothan and Khallie down here immediately!!"

Akvad had decided the time had come to act, to do something other than sit here and ponder.
Breifly he considered talking to Dunchadt about it, but had heard the big man's yelling from up the tower, and guessed that he was in no mood to talk about it.
Sitting down at his desk, the small man began to pen his note:
-----------------------------------------
Carrington,
I wish there were words I could write to you to turn you from this bloody path you have chosen. However, I have learned that you are a man who will stand beside his convictions until the bitter end. So I will tell you the only things I can.
Remember Alonwy. Remember the sacrifices she was willing to make, did make. Remember Dunchadt. Remember how this war you seem so willing to perpetuate affects more than the participants. Remember cutting deep into my back, spilling the remains of my life out. Remember and see what this all leads to.
The spirits wail with anger and loss. War solves none of this. Evil begets more evil.
I will finish this with a warning to you, if you hurt those in my care, or those i care about, you will never know a moments peace.
I do not wish to do that. Revenge and hatred consume the hater more than the hated, leaving both dead in its wake.
Akvad
------------------------------------------
He finished his writing, and looked over the parchment. In the light of the candle, his precise script looked as if it was written in blood.
"I do not know what I hope to accomplish by this," he muttered to himself in his naitive tongue.
He sprinked the sand over it to help it dry. Rolling it up, he put it aside.
Then he sat down again to write.
---------------------------------------
Alonwy,
See that Carrington gets this please. And do not tell Dunchadt.
Akvad.
---------------------------------------
The reaver rolled this note around the last one and slid them both in to a tube.
Marking the tube with the MacAndrews seal, he handed to a messanger set up just for communication between Dunchadt and Alonwy.
"Hurry, this is important," Akvad told him, and sent him on his way.

Secaran sat outside the window to Arguyle's study, waiting for the general to return. He hoped that Ayslyn knew what he was doing. Putting these two in the same room could cause problems, to say the least. Still Ayslyn had a way about him. He seemed so naive, so inanely sure that the universe would make sure that right prevailed and that no matter how bad things looked, he still believed. Even more annoying was that often he was right. If Secaran hadn't witnessed some of the things he'd seen, he would never have believed them. But still, often when Ayslyn's motives were pure, the universe seemed to align itself behind him, and everything seemed to work itself out, regardless of how bad things were. He had seen the Ranger turn what should have been utter defeat into astounding victories, turn lifelong, bitter enemies into the staunchest of allies, and even friends. Somehow, he knew that Ayslyn would work his stange brand of magic here, and hopefully, get these two one-time friends to see reason.

Carrington sat reading the letter for a long time. He had killed many Albion men and women on the Thidranki fronts the night before...and for what? Only a few of them were in self-defense. He sat there, silently.

Without looking at her, he handed the letter to her. Chanell took the letter and sat down to read. When she was finished, she handed it back to him. For once she didn't know what to tell him so she just sat there and looked at him.

Carrington turned to Chan.
"He's right you know."
He sat back and looked at the ceiling. All he did seem to do all the time was sit there, dumbfounded. He was a wreck mentally, and emotionally. Why was we following this path? Why?
"But Chan, how can I just NOT do anything? Am I supposed to let Arguyle's assassins kill me? I have to take action."
He sighed and looked to her.

Carrington frowned. He looked at Chan as she pierced him with her eyes and words. He sighed and looked down. He sat Akvad's letter down and stared at it.
"You're right Chan. You're absolutely right."
He looked her directly in the eyes.
"THAT is why I'm fighting to end this war. It's pointless. It doesn't have to be this way, but it is. However...this war with Arguyle, is also pointless...not only that, but personal, and backed my anger. Maybe you're right. Maybe I should try to stop it."

The scout bowed politely to his assassin shadow. She smiled back at him. He found it interesting the feelings that had grown for her. There was something about their bonds in battle and death that seemed to be melding them together. Though a pair and each distinct, they had quickly grown so in tune that they now seemed more one than separate.
And now they faced their united task and single purpose – kill the traitor.
They spoke only briefly at the portal keep of Albion in Thidranki. Soon they had joined to hear the battle voices of their fellow soldiers.
“Mids incoming from MPK to MBâ€
“Skald and Dancer near sniper hillâ€
“Flank to the leftâ€
“Oops…can I get a rez…â€
The messages came and flashed through their minds in rapid order as they stealthed about the battleground. Now and then they would send reports of enemies seen or slain. And always, in the back of their minds, the Hibernians. They wandered near the ruins and watched closely the portal keep of the tree people. Now and then the doors would open. Sometimes a lone celt or two would exit and be slain on the hillside. Then again, the one might turn into several or a dozen, and they would report back to their brothers.
“8 Hibs heading MBâ€
“Hibs heading to MPK via riverâ€
“Anybody seen that Carrington traitorâ€
“Don’t worry about him, just kill em allâ€
They continued to move in stealth most of the time as the battles, large and small, ebbed and flowed across the land. Sometimes they would be in the thick of matters and sometimes they were far away when the tumults came. And, as expected, now and then they would see the death screams of the traitor and hear only the whoops within the words.
“I got him that time!â€
“Another Carrington dead.â€
“Those dang mooses hit hard.â€
“Oops…any rezzers left?â€
For a long while they traveled the lands of war until sleep pressed heavily on their eyes. Carrington had been slain every time he had been seen. Yet, their mission was not complete. Not until they saw him on their own and placed their own blades in his belly would their mission be done.
And it was a mission in which they would not fail…

Arguyle was fuming by the time he heard Kilaitz make his comment about the ale.
"Look what your 'Brother' has done now Kilaitz! Look at it! He send his bumbling assassin to poison our very water supply and the ale! You know I had actually started to think that maybe I had made a mistake. That maybe this hunt for Carrington was wrong. But he has gone too far! There are children that drink from this water! The treacherous bastard does not care about anyone or anything except his own agenda! Choose here and now Councillor! Do you stand with the Order or with the bastard that would kill all of your Brothers and Sisters!! Men, women, children! He would kill them all! I will not have it! I shall see him hung from the gates of Forest Sauvage! I shall see him dead!" shouted Arguyle angrily.
"Jothan!! Khallie!! Somebody get them down here!" he yelled again.

“Khallie!!!â€
The very rafters above the cleric trembled and groaned beneath the weight of the Lord High General’s bellows. She looked with alarm toward the ceiling, and wondered if the structure would hold, and not collapse down upon her head. Scraping of wood on wood and violent thumps of furniture abused, a shattering of glass, muffled street-raw curses...all coming from the office above the Guild’s main hall she’d just entered.
“What in the heavens,†she muttered, glancing at her companion. Her friend, the assassin Orthos, stood beside her holding parcels of poisons, counter to hers of medicinal worth, recent purchases of their weekly restocking errands about the city.
A quirk of his left brow and subtle tilt of his head, and he said, “Thee best go methinks.â€
“Now, aye,†she sent over her shoulder, making haste for the stairwell. Twas no time to seek her scout husband. As she heard her name thundered a second time, her insides twisted, skin turning cold as winter frost. She needed no empathic abilities to realize the truth.
Something was terribly wrong.

Arguyle watched as Khallie came down the stairs of the cellar. He waved her to him.
"Khallie, it seems that the traitor has sent assassins to poison our water and ale. I need you to bless and purify our entire storeroom full of drink and food. As a matter of fact, the animal will probably try over and over again until everyone one of us is dead so plan on making this an everyday thing. Do it multiple times per day. We have to keep our stores clean of the beasts vile touch." said the Highlander.
As he walked up the stairs he turned back to Kilaitz.
"Kilaitz, ensure that the guard is tripled throughout the Hall and set wards on the storerooms."
Then walking from the cellar the Paladin pledged anew that Carrington Whitethorne would rue the day he betrayed the Order.

Carrington sat down with a quill and a parchment. He began to matter-of-factly write.
---------------------------------------------
Arguyle MacFadden,
I send this as a plea for us to end this guildwar. It is ridiculous for the both of us to waste lives on such a pointless squabble between ourselves. You should be recieving my first care package...the poison in the water, aye?
It isn't poison. It's an imitation. That was your warning. I want it to end. You send assassins after me...I send assassins after you...you attempt to turn my allies against me, I poison your water...it will only go on and on...esculating until the moment when we're either all dead, or one of us is gone. And what satisifaction would that be? What REALLY would be the point in that?
Please, think it over.
Signed,
Warden Carrington Whitethorne
---------------------------------------------
Quickly he rolled up the scroll and sealed it with the guild seal. He passed it to a waiting ranger, and the message was on it's way.

Macivor was enjoying a pint of oatmeal stout in Ye Mug when a messanger, with flushed face and wide eyes betraying an intense fear, bursted into the tavern.
"I seek the mercenary Macivor," he announced in a quivering voice reminiscent of one who had just reached the age of puberty.
"Christ, what do I have tae do tae enjoy a drink in peace?" Mac muttered to himself as he motioned the messenger over to his table.
The messenger stumbled over to where Mac was seated, knocking over two unoccupied stools in te process.
"Sir, I bring grave news from the Hall of the Red Lions" the messanger said, panting as though out of breath all the while.
"It seems a Hibernian assassin has poisoned the water supply!" He flinched as he reported this, as though he feared the mercenary would strike him for bearing such grim tidings.
"Dinnae care. Dinnae care tae drink water much," was all Mac had to offer on the subject.
The messenger took two steps back from Mac, bumping into one of the patrons standing at the bar and eliciting a dirty look from the barkeep. The young man felt it wise to get a good distance between himself and the sellsword before delivering his last bit of news.
"Er, there's one more thing... it seems that the assassin managed to taint some of the ale in the storehouse...."
Mac stared at the messenger for a good 15 seconds, eyes wide with disbelief, as if trying to make sense of what he just heard. Then with a roar, he upended the table where he was seated and stormed out of the tavern.
*****
A tear welled up in Mac's right eye as he surveyed the damage done to the libations stored in the cellar of the Hall of the Lions. What kind of person would stoop so low as to blight a perfectly good keg of ale? And this was not cheap stuff either, Mac himself had imported this keg from the far off kingdom of Bavaria.
"I didnae want tae make this personal Carrington, but ye have left me nae choice!"
Then walking from the cellar the mercenary pledged anew that Carrington Whitethorne would rue the day he betrayed his ale.

As Arguyle prepared a bounty poster for Carrington Whitethorne he heard a knock on the door.
"Come!" called out the Highlander.
In walked a slender Saracen that Arguyle had not seen in a long time. He carriend a bow in one hand and a letter in the other.
"What is it Scout Oded?" asked the Paladin.
"M'Lord, I was hunting in Forest Sauvage when I spied a lone elf. A ranger. He was moving along the shoreline of the lake there in the forest. Right across from the island. You know the place? Anyway, seeing the enemy I drew my bow and let fly an arrow from behind and above the man. My arrow flew true and the elf toppled to the ground. In doing so, he lost his grip on this." said the Scout offering the letter to the Paladin.
"It fell into the water. When I retrieved it I opened it and found that it was addressed to you. Unfortunately the ink was smeared by the water and much of it is unreadable. I wanted to bring it to you in case you were able to make heads or tails of it." continued the Scout.
"Thank you Oded. You are a good man." said the Paladin.
Taking the letter Arguyle opened it and read.
------------------------------------
Arguyle <blurred ink>,
I send <blurred ink>. <Blurred ink>. You should <blurred ink> first care package...<blurred ink> poison <blurred ink> water <blurred ink>
It <blurred ink> poison. <blurred ink> warning. I want <blurred ink> poison your water...<blurred ink> until <blurred ink> dead <blurred ink>

Signed,

-----------------------------------------
Arguyle wadded up the paper. His ire increasing with every word he read.
"So you want us dead? We shall see who ends up dead Carrington Whitethorne!!" growled Arguyle.

"What do you mean it got wet?!"
Carrington seethed and shoved the ranger out of the way.
"You realize that the message might not get across now?"
"I'm sorry Carrington...it was unavoidable."
"Unavoidable?!?" Carrington fumed and threw his club to the ground.
He took a deep breath and sighed.
"You're right. It isn't your fault. Did he send a reply?"
"No sir."
"Well then...we'll just have to wait. Maybe it wasn't damaged."

(Bumbling? Oooooooh Dem's fightin' words Argyule. )
Secaran quickly grew tired of waiting. He decided that approachin Arguyle might be prudent. He left his perch by the window, and made his way to one of the safehouses that Ayslyn maintained in the city. He choose his dress carefully, for an elf spotted wandering the streets of Camelot would find ill welcome in these times.

She strode through the streets, her pace quick, a look on her face such that most avoided her and the few that half started shouts of good morning let them trail away.
Occasionally fear flickered in her ice cold eyes and small flames burst through clenched fingers. Rumours were rife around Camelot about a cleric defected to hibernia, talks of killings of people thought to sympathize with the celts and poison in all the water supplies in the city.
No more she thought to herself. Would there never be peace for those who just want to be left alone. She strode quickly through the gates, her robes flapping in the wind.

The Guards looked at the monk before them and eyed him suspiciously. It seemed that as of late everyone was under suspicion.
Finally, one of the guards nodded and replied.
"Wait here. I shall inform the Steward of your request."
The Guard turned and disappeared into the guildhall. The Monk stood outside under the watchful eye of a half-dozen armsmen.

he must choose a side? but he didn't agree with either one... Kilaitz sighed and grabbed a few of the younger lions from the training ground, told them of what had happened and gave them direct orders to be standing at every corner in the hallway and for three to be patroling the cellar, he too fealt a deap loss for the poisoned ale.
"well caer, i think you done it this time, even if arguyle orders mac not to touch you he won't listen." kilaitz though to himself
pulling velaron to the side he said to him quietly, "make contact with carrington, see if you can find him, i want an opinion unblinded by rage" velaron nodded and went to find the ex-lion who had caused so much trouble.

The monk smiled benevolently on the departing guardsman. "Thank you my son," he said in a crisp avalonian accent. He stood, calmly in the yard, reading from an ancient and worn bible.

Kyle approached the monk at the entrance to the Hall of the Lion closely as he listened to the conversation below. The man looked familiar. Like a long lost friend. Bryndal? Could it be?
He turned to meet the guard as he was entering the room.
"Yes, I know. Let's go greet this visitor." said Kyle.
As the door opened he looked at the man and greeted him formally.
"Hail and well met good Friar. What news from the Avalonian Court? Camelot is a fair jaunt for an Avalonian to make. Even for a stout Friar as yourself."

All was still and quiet now, the brief skirmish over. The scout and assassin regarded the two Hibernians, laying not far from each other, felled by bow and blade. The scout had spotted the Celt, had him nearly dead afore she could even reach him; and with a sigh, she wondered if the scout really needed her sometimes.
They saluted their foes, a sign of respect. And beneath the pearl bright moon, casting light where there should be only darkness, the pair slipped into the shadowed world of stealth.
By a willow near the river, the assassin placed a hand on the scout's shoulder, halting him, and leaned in to whisper.
"Tis me honor to be by ye side, scout." She felt his hand rest briefly atop hers as she spoke. "The general will be pleased."

Ishish entered the Lions compound after having been out trying to reign in her anger. She was, of course, unsucessfull.
There were guards everywhere. Even the recruits were armed and standing watch. Marching across the compound she heard an unholy scream come from the storerooms.
"NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" the voice screamed.
Drawing her sword she sprinted into the storeroom expecting to find someone being tortured. What she saw was most unexpected. Macivor was sitting on the floor his arms wrapped around a small keg of stout. The man looked close to tears.
"What goes on here? Why are you holding that cask?" Ishish asked the mercenary.
Macivor explained what had happened in an impassioned voice, vowing to skin Carrington alive for such alcohol treachery.
Ishish was stunned. Poison? How could the man she once fought side by side with have done such a wicked, cowardly thing.
"Tis cowardice at its lowest level. War I can understand, swords and armor, spells and arrows, but poisoning food? Townsfolk drink from this well!"
Anger began welling up inside of her. Although it was always there, just under the surface. She must speak to the Lord High General.
Pulling her wineskin from her side she tossed it to Macivor.
"Its arconian red. Finest red around. Save me some for when I come back. We will drink to the loss of drink."
With that Ishish turned and went to find The General.

Carrington left the keep in Thidranki. While he appeared to be alone, this was not the case. A woman assassin...by the name of Tryal...from the most powerful guild in the war, Retribution, trailed around him.
"Stay close." Carrington said, "The Albion assassins are so eager to end my life that they will almost definately go for me carelessly. That's a fine meal for you."
She grinned and nodded.
They snuck around to the Albion territory of Thidranki, and scouted their keep. Knowing there would soon be battle death and blood, they prepared themselves.
At last, an assassin lept from the shadows at the Warden...quick to the reflexes was Carrington...he quickly evades and yelled, giving Tryal the word.
Tryal, the crimson dressed assassin lept with tigress-like agility and buried her blades deep into the back of the cloaked Albion...sending blood spurting into the air. He staggered around to meet her with his blades.
Just then, another Albion assassin lept from the shadows, but Carrington was again, too fast. He took a gash on the leg, but only minor. He clutched his spiked club and began to parry the assassin's blows.
Blood sprayed onto the lush green ground as the first assassin fell to a neck-shot by Tryal's blades. He quickly stepped over the corpse and dug her poisoned weapons into the side of the woman assassin that was now deep into battle with the warden. She screamed and neared death.
At last, Carrington reared back, raising his spiked club into the air, and with one fluid motion, brought it down upon the head of the poor lass, splintering her skull...causing her head to mush...killing her instantly.
Carrington limped and Tryal helped him toward some shelter behind a tree. He quickly tended his wounds and prepared for more death.
"This is only the beginning of our night."
She smirked and nodded.

Carrington and Tryal regained their strength.
The crimson assassin slipped into the shadows.
"Stay here. I thought I saw the door open...I'm going to scout."
Carrington nodded and slipped out from behind the tree, ready to back her up if she needed it. At last, she slipped out of sight leaving the Warden alone.
"A dangerous situation this is, Whitethorne." he thought to himself.
And just as he did...SHHWWW THUNK!
An arrow punked harmlessly against his shield. Surprised, he looked around, but could see no one.
PSSSSHHWWWWW SHIP!
Another arrow soared through the air, this time, grazing harmlessly across his armor.
He raised his voice to yell to Tyral...
SSSHHHHHHWWWWW THUDD!!!
Carrington screamed in pain as the stout arrow buried true into his arm. Another.
SSSHHHHWWWW THUNK!
Directly into his left leg. He stumbled to the ground.
"TRYAL!!!" he screamed.
"CARRINGTON!" she screamed, but was too far away to be of any use.
At last, Carrington spotted the Archer...a familiar looking man. He began to drag himself toward him...but as he did, a woman assassin lept from the shadows and buried her blades deep into his shoulder. He howled in pain. This couldn't be the end. It couldn't be.
PPSSSHHHHWWWWW THUUD!!!!!!!!
Directly underneath the arm as he raised his raised his weapon arm to fight. Powerless, he fell to the ground.
Tryal at last lept from the shadows, but it was too late. Arrows fluew true, and poisons found their mark. She fell soon after.
With a bow, the two assassins left them for dead. Carrington dared not move...if he did, they would almost definately behead him. At last, they were out of sight.
With all the strength he could muster....arrows protruding from his body, he drug himself over to Tryal, and wrapped his arms around her. He drug her for what seemed like hours...along the water, back toward the Hibernian base.
He was running out of energy. He couldn't possibly do it any longer. Bleeding, and most likely near death...the poison setting in, he began to feel sick. He lost conciousness.
Tryal, with her remaining strength began to shake him.
"Carrington?! CARRINGTON!"

Macivor finished fastening the writ of bounty to the door of Ye Mug. He stepped back to admire his handiwork. The poster read:
"By Royal Decree
King Constantine of Albion has placed a bounty in the amount of 5 copper pieces on the head of the traitor
CARRINGTONNE WHITETHORN.
The bounty can be collected at the Defenders of Albion upon presentation of the offender's severed head."

Twas almost the dawn, the skies lightening in anticipation of the golden warmth and heat to come.
But for the rogues of night, twas time to rest, and inside the portal keep of Albion, the scout and assassin unfurled their bedrolls and prepared to sleep.
The scout's sharp eyes and prowess with bow had assured their mission a success. Carrington and his guard had been slain by their hand, and tomorrow would bring more opportunities to serve their guild and hunt again the enemy pair.
Khes was learning patience. And she was learning teamwork. And she couldn't help but continue to wonder, as she fell to slumber watching the scout, if he needed her...as much as she was starting to need him.

The monk bowed low in greeting, carefuly closing and puting away the bible. "I would not know, I have not been privy to news of the courts in a very long time. My order stays in seclusion for the most part, to better focus our minds on God." He crossed himself, and bowed his head briefly in prayer. "Our monastary lies in the Avalon Marsh," the monk said, spying Arguyle striding towards them, "There is a lovely, Green Willow, on the grounds that is believed to have sheltered a saint, though the records are sparse on precisely which."

"Carrington, you still do not look so good." the young Celt had finally made her way to the keep. " I was able to remove the poision and by Danu's grace mend much of the damage, but you still need to rest some."
Looking around him from his sick bed, Carrington saw Anghared sitting by his side, her wlof friend Keno Khan at her feet. She had brought some food and drink for when he awoke.
"I could not get Alonwy to come,"she said in a tone of saddnes mixed with disguest. "She used to love battle. But now......some honour -kin she turned out to be..."
She handed him some herbal tea, "Here drink this, it will help your insides heal faster. I mixed it with honey so it won't taste as bad.'
"Sence Alonwy has let you down, I offer what service I can to aid you. Could you use a druid here?" she smiled warmly knowing it was a silly question.

Kyle smiled slightly as he listened to the monks reply. He glanced over his shoulder and saw Arguyle headed toward the stairs.
He turned his gaze back onto the monk and made a simple motion with his hands. Within seconds the monk was surrounded by a half-dozen armsmen, blades drawn. Above them from the balconies more armsman and scouts took aim at the monk with crossbows and longbows.
"You sir are under arrest under suspicion of conspiracy to assassinate Lord High General Arguyle MacFadden. Your ruse has been found out and resistance will result in your immediate death. Submit or die." said the Steward flatly.
Then, grin spreading wide across his face, Kyle added.
"Had you not claimed to be a monk you might have gained an audience. However, it is well known within Albion that there are no Avalonian Friars."

The monk raised a slim eyebrow. "I do not recall claiming to be a friar, simply a simple man of God." He held out his empty hands, "As you see, I carry no staff, nor am I trained at all in its use. However, I commend you in your desire to protect your lord. It shows that he is as good and true as the stories I have heard in my trip north from my monastary. As I see him there, I suggest the following, to put you at ease, and to show I am no threat." The monk removed a sealed scrollcase from his robes. Opening it, he removed the scroll from within, upended the case, and shook it hard, then slid his fingers deep with it. "There, you see, nothing in it, nothing to harm your lord. Just a message for him." He replaced the scroll, and the cap on the tube. Offering the resealed case to the crier he smiled benevolently, "Give this to him, I shall wait here for his reply."

Arguyle heard the commotion at the entrance as he was passing toward the stairway. He looked to see what was going on and saw a man in the vestments of a holy man being surrounded by guards. He could hear Kyle placing the man under arrest so he began moving toward the activities.
As he drew nearer something the man said finally registered. He had mentioned a Green Willow. Then it clicked.
"Tis alright Kyle! I know this man! Let him pass." said Arguyle as he eyed the man.
Kyle nodding toward his Lord moved to the side allowing the man entry to the hall.
Arguyle walked closer and smiled. Placing his hand on the man's shoulder he laughed.
"It has been a long time since I last saw you my old friend. Come. Join me for a drink by the fire." said the Paladin as he led the man up the stairs and to his office.
As the man entered Arguyle shoved him into the room and shut the door quickly behind him.
"Did Ayslyn send you?" whispered the Highlander.

(They said I couldn't be a Bard... Nobody said ANYTHING about singing I refuse to be tied down by game rules )
The monk closed the door behind him and removed his cowl. Pointed ears peeked through long hair. Secaran smiled and handed the scroll over to Arguyle. "He did. And you can tell whoever is howling in grief in the cellar that the ale is fine. If you have the poison checked, you will find that it is a mild sleeping draught. Carrington means to warn you off. He does not relish the thought of killing those he once called brothers. Even if it was only in arms."

Arguyle looked deep into the elf's eyes. It was as if he was peering into the very soul of the man. Searching.
Finally, satisfied that the man was telling the truth Arguyle relaxed and took a seat behind the desk.
"Tell me, what the hell is Carrington doing? Why does he continue to do things on his own instead of allowing those that would help him to do so? And what is this nonsense about him wanting to bring down the Royal House? He knows that Constantine is my friend. A brother really. He has to know that I will not allow him to harm the King." said the Highlander.
Noticing the brief look of surprise on the elf's face he smiled.
"Do not look so surprised. Do you think that Carrington is the only one with spies. There is not much that goes on in his camp that I do not know about."

Know this, though, the first sign I have that Carrington has not aborted this fool mission I shall unleash hell. "So for your hatred of one man, you would ruin a country." Secaran looked speculatively at the Lord General. "Then again. Perhaps Ayslyn was wrong about you. I suggest you reflect on the Stones game and Mansfield's advice to you," he grinned at the look of shock on Arguyle's face. "Ayslyn is very old, and has many eyes. And above all is dedicated to protecting people. Read the scroll. If your answer is yes, come to Emain three days hence. Ayslyn will find you." He replaced his hood, and turned to leave. "May your god look down on you favourably, for I know that our Goddess does us." He opened the door and left.

Ayslyn approached the Nawg guildhouse. He was more than a little fond of the lively guild. Anyone that took that much joy in the simple living of life was alright in his book. Today however, they harboured a potential threat to the peace of Hibernia, and its people. He rapped sharply on the door, and when it was answered, announced, "I need to speak with young Carrington."

Carrington almost immediately opened the door. He was almost obviously waiting.
"I swear to God Asylyn if you call me young one more time, I'm going to slap you upside your damned elven face."
Carrington looked like he hadn't slept in days...his mood was almost definately effected...he was a wreck.
"No, are you going to give me the damned news or are you going to stand there looking pointy?"

Carrington, stressed and sleep-deprived started at the ranger with an extremely annoyed look on his face.
"...."
Carrington shut the door behind Asylyn, then turned to face him. After a moment of silence...
"Well NO BLOODY SHITE I'm going to try an' work it out! STILL I have recieved no word from him! Nothing! Does he not care that I'm trying to contact him! Does he think that I WANT this to go on and on until we're dead?!"
Carrington seethed. He looked to the ground, closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Look Asylyn...you don't want this personal bloodshed anymore than I. An' he should know that I can barely go outside to have a breath of fresh air without his blood assassins screaming "land or death!" And he expects me to make contact with HIM!?"
Carrington folded his arms and lowered his gaze at Asylyn.
"You're a friend of his aye? Has he gotten to you to? Go ahead! Draw your blade Asylyn! See if you can take my life! In the name of NOTHING!"
Carrington seethed and glared at the ranger...an emotional wreck.

A dark mercenary lingered near the woods of Howth, but her features were unrecognizable as a highlander. No, her hair was spiked outward in the common celt look, and she'd painted her face blue with the markings of a local clan.
She'd been listening to the stories on the wind and in the taverns as she searched for news of her lost brother. It seemed things raged white hot between Albion and Hibernia at the moment, and who was to blame?
Carrington of course. Carrington Whitethorne.
"Damn farking pretty boy cleric needs his head remo'ed from his bleeding arse. Mucking up e'erything fer his own desires.. AGAIN."
She spit and began to polish her blades.
"Little prick,.. mayhaps I'll pay him a visit," Moryan muttered a few more foul oaths as she disappeared into the shadows.

Arguyle thought long on the words Secaran had said. He read and re-read the missive from Ayslyn. He was torn on what path to take. Carrington had been like a son to him. Albeit a son who had betrayed him and torn his heart from his chest.
One thing was certain, if Carrington did not give up his quest to kill the King then Arguyle would be forced to hound the man to the end of his days.

Ayslyn didn't respond right away. "Lad, I am more than a thousand years older than you. Had I wished you dead, you would aready be so, and none of the people in this fine house would have been able to stop me. Now, what I am interested in at the moment is protecting my friends, which, despite severely trying my patience, you are counted amongst.
Now, you apparently have some silly notion of assassinating Constantine. If this is true, you Will discard it right now. Killing him will do no good, and cause a great deal of harm. Next, I have arranged a meeting between you and Arguyle, where we will all sit down, and Civily talk, and hopefully resolve this little vendetta that you both appear to be engaged in. Until then, he has called off his assassins. You will get some rest, so that you will, hopefully, be a bit calmer when we meet."

To Kill A Carrington......

The young Saracen scout stood just outside the entrance to the portal keep of Albion in the battleground of Thidranki. Close by his side stood his companion, the assassin Kheslyn. The scout’s days in this place were quickly drawing to a close and he was none-to-happy about it. There were so many enemies who needed killing, along with the traitor. It seemed the one who fancied himself the pretty boy of Hibernia had fled to the deepest reaches of the tree peoples. He had not been seen in days. Only his lady assassin bodyguard had been spotted, and the scout had taken great pains to fire arrows into her spine.
But that was what he always did. Killing the Hibernians had become a welcome passion for him. Trolls and the folk of Midgard be one thing, but the leaf peoples he had come to hate. The norse are large and easy targets. But the elfs with their pointy ears and tiny little rat-like lurikeens had come to be his hated foes. And there were so many of them. They seemed to breed like yard cats, except cats serve useful purposes. Hibernians are good for nothing but bodkin targets.
He thought of recent nights of siege at the central keep. He had stood long hours at the battlements firing at the evil little minions as they scampered below the keep walls. Here he would see a celt sitting, one true arrow and the foe would die. There he would see one healing another, and careful aim would send the both of them to deaths well earned. He found killing them utterly to his liking. And even when their mindless horde managed to beat down the doors and kill the last of the Albion defenders… he was happy.
He had killed them more than they he. He had bested each one he wished. Carrington had proven more talk, and show than action. But then, that is the way it is with some folks. They talk and brandish arms and cavort about on the battlefields. Yet in the end they are dead and he is alive.
The god of truth speaks for the cause of Albion. And he says traitors and wee-folk must die.

Secaran patroled the area around Howth, following the woman in the shadows. Slipping from shadow to shadow, faster than the eye could track, he grinned. "What brings the lovely Moryan out to our humble homeland?" he whispered loudly.

The woman stopped and snorted. "I'm sure ye bloody well know elf. Yer kind know e'erything, aye?"
She leaned her back against a tree, looking utterly non-chalant as she used a small whetstone on one of her many daggers.
"I'm looking fer a lost brother, tis rumor that he was seen in Hibernia. He means the world ta me, and I mean ta find him." Her dark eyes gaze about a moment, then draw back to the elf.
"Also, I've heard farking Carrington is lurking. That pretty boy stirs up more problems than 2 bears in a beeshi'e. Best watch him."
Shoving the dagger home in the sheat on her thigh, she casually added, "Anything else elfling?"

Secaran chuckled softly, "Everything? No, that is just a rumour we spread to increase our mystery." He grinned. "Well, for starters, I would prefer Secaran over Elfling. After all, what is the fun if only one of us knows the other. The facial tattoos are excellent by the by. If I hadn't already known what you looked like, I would have been taken in by them." He took a wineskin from his bags, and drank from it before offering it to her. "Care for some? I hate to drink alone," he said with a wink. "If you'ld like, I might be able to help you. I could hardly refuse to help a beautiful woman, now could I?"

A shadow glimpsed. A brush of weight upon the hillside grasses. The merest whisper of a blade unsheathed.
He was good. But not good enough. She'd detected him.
Kheslyn's head tilted, eyes flared. She almost didn't breathe. No muscle dared defy her command for stillness, for silence, as she marked the norse assassin passing the broad-trunked rowan she hid beside, in view of Hibernia's portal keep.
The keep doors would open any moment. She'd not much time. In the darkness she hunted him, marking well his tall figure, calculating height, weight, evaluating distances, determining strike times. A few steps behind him, gaining ground, moving swiftly, releasing the glowing weapons unto their deadly tasks.
He must have sensed her. Foolishly he halted, he turned.
Within one breath and another she'd slipped in front of him, arced the blue-grey blades sparking moonlight high, with no hesitation, slashing his throat. She pivoted to the left then came again, driving both blades deep into his midsection, feeling the leather armor and muscled flesh give way to unyielding enchanted mithril.
A low gurgle and sigh, the only sounds escaping from a throat steeped in blood, slashed open to the chill night air. The norseman staggered, eyes glazed, his strength, his life...failing...extinguished as he toppled forward.
She viewed him flatly. He'd have slain her if given the chance, as surely as the horde of his kinsmen had taken her life not a half hour afore. A cold rationalization, but such was the ways of her craft. She saluted him, and tilted her head once more.
The quiet shoosh of soaring arrows, a scream of agony, and she knew that somewhere close, her partner the scout had completed his task as well. The shadows welcomed her as she sought him, moments later in his company. She felt him behind her, leaning in to whisper. She nodded, gaze never leaving the Hibernian gates, now opening wide to the two, possibly three groups departing.
They'd orders not to kill him...Whitethorne...for now. She studied the Celts in particular, but his warden's form was nay among them, for the third night running. She'd heard rumors he'd retired from battle. The shadows hissed of his changing professions. She'd believe what her eyes told her, and that remained to be determined.
And so for now, she and the scout would wait, and watch, silent and unseen in the darkness of night.

Her nose wrinkled at the wine. "Nae thanks, wine dun do it fer me." From a pocket hidden deep in her satchel, she pulled a battered and worn flask. She gently unwrapped it from its soft cloth.
"I had this made special, right afore I left.. its made by Nocte, he called it Rot Gut. Care fer a swing?" She unstoppered it, taking a long drink as if it were the finest sweet water, but her cheeks flushed and her eyes watered just a bit.
She offered him the battered silver flask with a crooked grin. "Might want ta take it easy on it though, stuff will rot out yer tongue."

"Rot your tongue out? I'll pass then. I'm fond of my tongue. It has a number of interesting uses." He grinned. "I'll stick to the wine." He toasted her with the skin before taking another drink.

She shrugged in the classic Moryan fashion, took another sip in rememberance of her friend Nocte, then tucked the flask safely away.
"So, ye recognized me, but yer nae trying ta off me. I'll admit ta being a bit puzzled about that. What other surprises might ye ha'e in store eh?"
Her dark eyes drifted to the shadows a moment, but a casual action as if she had nothing to fear.

"Oh, I am full of surprises. Not all of us feel the need to slaughter every non-Hibernian on sight. The man I work for believes in helping people, regardless of the circumstances of thier birth, or whom they pledge thier loyalties to. So, since you don't seem to be rampaging across the countryside, slaughtering those I am pledged to protect, I see no reason why I should harm you. And if you need help," he paused for a moment. "Well, that is what we do."

Shrugging her shoulders, she spoke again after a few moments thought. "I dinna think theres anything I need, I'm simply tracking down the rumors of his whereabouts."
Dark eyes softened a moment, "Honestly, I think m'brother is dead, and I shant find but his gra'e when I finally reach the end o' m'search. And that is something I'd rather confront on m'own. Maybe then, I'll return home and be able ta put it ta rest."

The brave scout of Albion was making his way slowly towards the land of the leaf peoples. The trolls of Midgard had recently captured the main fortress, and so he moved cautiously as he passed one of the central bridges. Suddenly his senses alerted to a presence nearby. Off to his left he saw the movement – an elf ranger with stealth so bad he might as well been a firbolg. The scout smiled and quietly drew his bow. The ranger’s hiding was so poor that, even in the several seconds it required to aim the arrow, the scout did not lose sight.
The bodkin flew and pierced his worthless elf skin. The ranger turned, as though he was amazed that someone had spotted him. Carefully the scout took aim again, looking straight into the eyes of the Hibernian. The elf began to run, but it was so use, as the second arrow pierced his heart and he fell in a heap of elf-flesh.
The scout smiled again. Soon enough, the target would be Carrington, and sure enough the result would be the same. No matter what shape or form the traitor acquired, the scout would seek him and slay him.

Secaran nodded. "I can certainly understand that. Very well then; I'll leave you to it. If you need anything though... It was delightful to finaly meet you, face to face... I am glad to have had a chance to talk to such a fair, " he paused, grinning mischieviously, "Lady." He slipped away into the shadows, chuckling before she had a chance to react.

With a snort after the elfling, she rolled her eyes and made her own way into the darkness, seeking that which she most likely would never find.

((The pleasure was mine ))
Ayslyn sat in his chair next to the fireplace. A book sat, open but unread, in his lap. He sat, and he thought. He only hoped that Arguyle would agree to meet him. That he and Arguyle would both listen to reason, and work this out. That, at the end of the day, he would not have to view him as a true threat to the peace. He closed the book with a sigh, and motioned one of the children over. "Carie, lass. Can you do me a favour?" The girl nodded happily. Ayslyn smiled. "Thank you. Go and find Tayana. Ask her to come see me. I think I might need her help." The girl grinned, and bolted off to find the Heroine.

The heroine had been fighting finlaiths for so long that her vision had begun to blur and the nearly transparent beasts had become altogether invisible. It had been a very long day, and as she dismounted from her horse outside of Mag Mell what Tayana desired most in the world was a good meal and a long sleep...
"MISS TAYANA, MISS TAYANA!"
Cursing inwardly she turned to see one of Ayslyn's pint-sized minions waving excitedly to her.
"Well now, what can I do for ye sweetheart?" Tayana asked the girl, resigning herself to the fact that her dinner and collapse would have to wait.
"Ayslyn sez that he wanted ta ask that you come see him 'cause he needs your help wit' something," the girl dutifully repeated.
"Oh he does, does he? Well, lead on then."

(Pint sized... Feh! A few of them are fully Quart sized I'll have you know )
The girl lead Tayana down into the warren of tunnels that lead to Ayslyn's home. When she got there, she found a steaming bowl of stew and a round of bread, fresh from the ovens. Ayslyn sat in his chair, smiling. "I'm sorry to drag you down here like this. You're most likely famished and tired from the hunt. What I have to ask you can wait until you are fed." He nodded to the supper on the table. "Eat first, then you can properly tell me whether or not you will help."

Tayana looked first to the food, and then to the elf. "The world would truly be a better place if there were more men like ye, Ays," she smiled gratefully. Seating herself at the table she broke off a piece of bread and paused before she popped it into her mouth. "Ye might as well tell me now what it is. Fed or unfed, ye know I'm goin' te say yes."

Ayslyn smiled at her. "I don't know that the world can handle more than one of me lass." His smile faltered slightly. "I plan to put Carrington and Arguyle in a room and see if we can't work this nonsense out without too much bloodshed. I'll be busy getting Arguyle here, and I would very much appreciate it if you could bring Carrington down. He's not in top form right now, and he might not agree," he paused, "Especially since he can't know the way here right now. But, I can't allow him to refuse this meeting, and I would ask you to ensure that he does not. Can you do this for me?"

The heroine smirked, "Well, I wouldn't mind if there was another one of ye, as long as he wasn't spoken for too."
"But that sounds simple enough. Ye've seen Talannis, so ye know I'm used to dealing with cranky, unreasonable men. How hard do ye want me to pursuade him if the lad's opposed to the idea?" Tayana asked, raising an eyebrow. "And when do ye want me to fetch him? I'd at least like to finish this first," she motioned to the stew, "As I think I'll be needing a full stomach."

Ayslyn smiled "Aye, your brother... That is part of the reason I asked you. There is nothing so persuasive as a proven track record." He winked. "He needs to be here, so I have to ask you to not take no for an answer. But, do try not to hurt the lad permenantly. Unconscious I can work with. Maimed, or crippled... Not so easy." He grinned. "I don't need him here for another day, so you have plenty of time. There are spare rooms also, if you don't feel up to the trip back up. Hopefully Arguyle will agree to this meeting. I imagine he will be more ammenable if I don't have to kidnap him."

((oof... Yep, Tay, it looks like you'll have to bring him the hard way ))
Ayslyn sat again in his chair, thinking. Tay had clearly been exauhsted. And so, after her meal, Ayslyn had, with much glaring from her and much chuckling from him, ordered her to take advantage of one of the empty quarters. "From what I have heard of the lad's adventures of late, getting him down here won't be easy. Rest, and tomorrow, you can go and fetch him."
His people within the Lions had not mentioned any preparations for Arguyle to depart. Ayslyn wondered if he would come, or if Ayslyn would have to force the issue. "Oh well," he thought, "Time enough to worry about that on the morrow. I best take my own advice, and get some rest. This all should prove vastly entertaining at the very least."

Carrington Whitethorne donned his newly crafted ranger gear...and intricately carved and spellcrafted recruve bow. Tonight, he would take his retribution. Tonight he would kill.
At first, Hibernia was out in few numbers...and they had to tip-toe around the massive forces of Albion, who had recently taken Thidranki Faste from the clutches of the barbarian Midgard peoples. But a call to arms was made....and oh was it answered.
Hibernians, shield to shield drove Albion back again and again, and Whitethorne shined.
Mage after mage fell by a single arrow...trolls, brits, kobolds, inconnu...it didn't matter. All that stood in Hibernia's way fell.
At last, at the end of the night, Carrington turned in. He was certain that Albion would be out in stronger force tonight...and that he would have to be more prepared than he ever was.

Self-Deprication analysis:
RANGER of Hibernia, Dead Man Walking(!)~
-Traitor Marked for Death by an Entire Country of men-(!)
-I'm Carrington Whitethorne, and You're Not.- (Poor me) You're no match for me, so why don't you just lay down.
