Do you have a cat? j/k Install some heat monitoring software and compare the before and after results and see. CPUID's HWMonitor is a good one: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Yes, you can leave the side off of the case. I'm sure almost every person in this forum has had a computer that spent most of it's life with a side off I had one computer that couldn't be kept cool without a box fan and a side off. Now aesthetically....there are "cleaner" ways to keep a system cool...but I'll leave those explanations to the more anally retentive people

you are obviously going to want to watch for dust levels too. won't take too long tucked into a tight spot, without the side on to get pretty caked in the crap.

Basically with the side of the case off, you have no AIRFLOW. As long as your not doing some heavy OCing, you should be just fine but a little hotter as your essentially moving into passive cooling for the HDs / Opticals....
Also, if by tighter you mean like a cubby with little airflow, I would suggest another location.

I'd day measure the temp with the side on and off before you decide. The case closed is designed to allow for airflow to pass from the front tot he back of the case over the components that need cooling. If you take the side off, that airflow is destroyed. Depending on how confined a space we're talking about, this may or may not have an effect on the cooling.

There are two downsides to removing a case cover. One is that you remove or change the airflow. The second is that you lose a RF shield. It might also be an issue for what can fall into the case.

I used to work at a design firm that did work for Ford/GM/whoever else. One day one of the case fans in the server went out and the server shut down right in the middle of a big project. I was told to get the server back up and running. I went down to the hardware store and bought one of those tornado fans... took the side cover off and pointed it in there. It stayed that way for 5 years... running 24/7/365. Eventually we got the approval to upgrade the server (when we ran out of drive space).

Pulling the side off and putting a fan blowing in isn't the same thing as what the op asked.
