If your movie is good it'll just get pirated. Part of the reliance on the big opening weekend is driven by the fact that after opening weekend there'll be 50 billion pirated copies available on all the torrent sites.
With more and more people having large screen TVs at home there are more and more people willing to save the $20 (after their fat face gets popcorn and a drink) and just watch it at home instead.
