The Dark is Rising. They took a brilliantly written book about a boy living in England in the 50's or 60's (they dont say exactly when) with a big family, learning that he has mystical powers and is part of an ancient circle of the Light, and that he will have to fight the powers of the Dark. And re-wrote it to be a modern-day story about a whiny emo teen in America, changed the characters so much they werent even recognizable as the characters in the book any more, and basically re-wrote half the plot. I cried when i saw the trailer, just thinking that a whole generation of kids were going to associate this absolute dross with the title "The Dark is Rising", instead of Susan Cooper's award-winning books.

I was originally pissed about the movie as they fooked everything up from the story, even simple stuff like who made Lestat (which was magnus, not marius) but if you let all that stuff go it was a pretty decent flick. Much better than the fruity twighlight movies that ruined the whole vamp genre.

The original was not good (lol @ the voiceboxes that kill). I loved Stilgar's line "MMMMMMMMMM. Shaiiiii halooood" and it has Patrick Stewert as Gurney, that's pretty hilarious. And the eyebrows on the Mentants! OMG epic. Actually, I think as a B movie. There is a place in my heart for it. The Mini-Series was a lot better. And it was a joke kigaro posted: I'd like a see a Dune remake.

On a scale of 1 - 10 the first few Gor books were at best a 4 and get worse further into the series. The movie was a 0. The return of the king as a book is a 10 and the movie at best is a 4. You do the math.

Eragon. Not because the book was some great piece of literature, but that the movie was just that bad. Also, despite being a cheap rip-off of a lot of other great stories, Eragon ripped off really good stories... A lot of Stephen King's books got horrible movies... but then again, some of his movies are amongst my favorites ever. *shrug*

Yeah it is much better when vampires are twice as gay in fishnets singing like the douche from Korn One of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I didn't read the book. That one girl who died who is in it is hot though, so it was worth a single watching

the original Robert Heinlein book is STILL one of the great sci-fi classics. the movie? they could have just changed the name of the movie to BUG HUNT, changed all the names of the characters, places, and ships, made the same movie, and no one would have been able to guess that it was supposed to have been taken from the book. and Annanova's second choice, battlefield earth- the book was terrible, and the movie has got to be the WORST piece of garbage ever made. yes. i have read both starship troopers and battlefield earth, more than once. the book starship troopers is still one of my favorite reads. it was probably the book that first got me interested in science fiction. battlefield earth, not so much. the first half isn't actually to bad. the second half reads like it was written by committee just to push the page count up. but that is a common problem with L. Ron's sci-fi books. just look at the mission earth series sometime. 10 books, each one close to 1000 pages long, read like they were wrote by 4-5 different people. Terminius_Est posted:

That's like saying The Count of Monte Cristo was a bad movie because it completely changes the end (the point) of the book. That movie is still entertaining on its own as an interpretAtion even though Dumas writes a much more violent and cold book whereas the movie has a happy finish.

My understanding is the book is about totalitarian government and youth indoctrination (primarily) and is a social-political commentary on such. The movie barely touches on that, and it's about young, good looking people, slaying monsters. Should have just called it 'Bugs' or something

i think, of all the books i've read and then seen the movie for, two towers pissed me off the most. i still don't understand the decision to change faromir so greatly. complete 180 on his personality and what he did when he found out about the ring for NO reason. i don't get it and it really pissed me off. i also think the harry potter movies after chamber of secrets progressively got worse (mostly because the books got longer and they kept changing directors.) to the point of being unwatchably bad to me.

sounds like someone has been listening to much to left wing college literature teachers. read the book. decide for yourself. DunesVladHarkonnen posted:
Terminius_Est posted: No, it's not at all like the book. They kept the names and the aliens and the war but that's all.
My understanding is the book is about totalitarian government and youth indoctrination (primarily) and is a social-political commentary on such. The movie barely touches on that, and it's about young, good looking people, slaying monsters. Should have just called it 'Bugs' or something

There were lots of things in LotR that should and could have been done better...but none of them are BAD movies. And they would have had to have been 5 hours long to have been good adaptations of the books...so I don't think it's fair to count them...The books themselves are fairly long and cover a LOT of material...I just hope to God they don't screw up The Hobbit, because I will seriously consider hurting someone if they do it badly. and I though the harry potter movies were all pretty good too. They definitely left out a lot of stuff that shouldn't have been...I can't think of any examples in particular, I just remember after I read the books (which I did after the first five or so movies had already been released) there was a lot of stuff I wish had been in them....but in general, still good movies. there aren't a lot of books I've read which have been turned into movies...I read most of The Golden Compass, and it had a fair amount in it that was missing...but I can't comment on it too much, because I got bored with the book and stopped reading it.

You guys just don't know awful... the Dragonlance movie was done in He-Man style animation... So take my childhood memories of after school cartoon, and mix that with what is at least a pre-teen storyline... just the scene of Tika's boobs bouncing all over the screen at the Inn at the beginning of the book made me feel all kinds of wrong to be watching it!

The first one did ok iirc, but when they killed marie it kinda ruined it. I still liked the movies though. I really was disappointed with The Hunger Games. I felt like they left a lot out in the translation, not to mention the way the majority of it was filmed. I think I could have held a camera steadier than they did. I'm both excited and scared for the visual edition of The Dark Tower series. It's one of my favorite reads and I really hope they don't screw it up.

The Golden Compass turned one of the book villains into a movie hero, and it combined a couple of other characters into nonsensical trash. I doubt it was the *worst* ever, but it was pretty bad. At least they left the most unwatchable scene for last.

uhm.. i didn't say they were bad movies? i just felt that the EXTREME change to one of the most noble men in the book pushed it over into being one of the worst translations i've ever seen. i don't watch many movies of books i've read. i always hate them. and i absolutely loathed two towers because of the faromir thing. jezza, i've seen that dragonlance cartoon and i agree with you 100%. i was SO BAD. i couldn't even watch more than 10 minutes of it.
