It was the equivalent of letting the kickoff get returned for a TD as time expired.

I turned off that game last night at half-time. Terrible refereeing.
I don't care that we lost, the Olympics (and U23) is boring anyway. It's like college soccer.
But some of those kids could have got hurt. The El Salvadorians were just classless. Brek Shea gets hip checked on either side, spun in the air 3 times, and lands hard....and the ref didn't even show a card.

45 minutes of play, followed by 45 minutes of play. Period. That's not opinion.
No TV timeouts, injury time outs, no turnover timeouts...the game continues. The clock keeps moving.
The ball is not in all parts of the field at all times, but no one just stands around. Even the goalie. Only a complete moron who has never watched a single match in their life would think that.
Players are still required to move to other parts of the field as the ball is played.
It's certainly not 40 seconds of standing around for every 5 seconds of action.

so when a football players walks off the field between plays it's not the same as a soccer player walking to a spot on the field?
you are in serious denial if you think all soccer players on the field are putting in full effort all the time.
hell even after watching some highlight clips watching the edge of the screen you can see standing/walking.
not to mention i just watched 30 seconds of whining to a ref. sure the foot fairies were hopping around in protest, but i could clearly see 7 others standing still, and the goalie sitting down.

One thing you know about your soccer team on any given day, that at LEAST 8 of the 11 guys you send out, will play the entire game.
Unfortunately, with no access to oxygen machines.

well we all know that number is just idiotic.
47 of 53 players on the roster are morbidly obese right??
most teams have 5 receivers minimum...can you think of any morbidly obese receivers?
how about starting QB's...can you think of any?
so that's the 6 non morbidly obese players...without backup QB, kicker, punter, DB's, RB's, LB's.
i'll just go with TUG is being a poor troll, because i really dont want to think he is really that stupid.

Does it matter what the percentage is? I wanted to keep a clean, conforming number, so 90% seemed the most fun to rile up the masses.
Does it matter that 50% of the team is morbidly obese? 25%? When is it acceptable to mock an "athlete" that has to run 20 yards and needs medical attention?
Those 16 games a year when you only spend a grand total of 5 minutes moving on the field MUST BE ROUGH!

It's insane to put an impossibly high standard of athleticism on a sport and discount any sports that can't match it. That's the point. We all know Soccer is one of the most physically demanding games out there, but does that necessarily mean other sports cant be enjoyable?
Some people enjoy competitive chess, what do you think of that? Sitting for hours and hours. Some people enjoy Sumo wrestling, what do you think of that? Those morbidly obese fat men are probably better athletes than you or I.
is endurance the only physical trait that matters to you? what about strength, explosive speed, technique?

Yes, the running backs, wide receivers, kickers, and kick returners are all athletes...They do not account for half the team. I play NFL 12, I know these things.

There's more to athleticism than endurance, TUG. I already told you this. A guy who "looks" fat to you may actually be a fantastic athlete and perfectly healthy. So what if he can't run for as long as Feetball players do without needing an oxygen tank? I bet they can lift more weight than those Feetball players do though. But you aren't interested in physical strength, only in physical endurance...which is a completely arbitrary measurement of health and athleticism.

Explosive speed and strength in short bursts is indeed what partly constitutes athleticism. It's the same thing that allows a DE to get around an OT, it's the same thing that allows a shortstop to get a jump on a ball and make a fantastic catch/throw, it's the same thing that allows my boy Derrick Rose to cross fools over and dash from the top of the key to the rim in a blur.
endurance is NOT the only thing that makes a healthy athlete, for the 3rd time. By your logic, short distance runners are complete crap and only long distance runners are true athletes.

The Olympics did not want to compete with the World Cup, and to maintain the "amateur players" as opposed to "professional", and keep countries on equal footing they require all male players to be under the age of 23 at the beginning of the tournament. To add interest, they allow 3 over 23 players per team.
