That would be a dirty move by Blizz, hype the "guaranteed beta invite" when you purchase the AP and you wind up getting into beta at the very end. ><

There's a video with a dev of GW2 talking about their model. The RL money is for armor and fluff items, which can be obtained in game without RL cash. There are 3 currency types in game.

It won't be like Lotro where you can't quest in such and such zone without paying $2.99.

I'm in the same boat. Disappointment after disappointment with MMOs over the last few years has jaded me. No doubt. But this blind fanaticism for Guild Wars 2 makes me wonder at times. It's like the sacred cow or something. Well, anyway, best of luck with getting a beta invites to everyone.
