Until they learn to spend money better they deserve more cuts. The trustees just met and approved a 10% increase in salary for two new presidents over their predecessors and even said they wished they could give them more but they aren't allowed. There is one administrator for every professor in the Cal State system.

Of course this plan was just announced after Jerry Brown got a teachers union to combine their tax increase plan with his, whenever the democrats have a tax increase on the ballot there are always dire threats of doom and gloom spending cuts.

I think other things should be cut first instead of education. Bill Gates gave a good talk about the crisis on TED talk that I watched only a few days ago
http://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates_how_state_budgets_are_breaking_us_schools.html

A lot of it has to do with the federal government stealing state revenue to fund their own stupid things also, like 2 dumb wars. A lot of California's revenue also gets distributed to other states so it's available expenses that aren't debt is often times lower than what it actually generates in revenue

How much has total spending per student gone up over the last 10 years? Or pick your own time frame...

There is alot of complaining about college spending....but very few people seem to have even considered that question. It seems important if you are worried about spending. If you dont know these facts, it would seem hard to have an informed opinion on the subject.

Tuition is easy data to find. Total spending is pretty difficult to find. Good luck.

ed - nationally tuition at public universities was up almost 50% from 99-09. Thats inflation adjusted, and that sure seems high. But spending over the same period was only up ~15%, with the majority of that increase being research. The answer to that puzzle is found in declining state education dollars.

I would just like them to spend more responsibly, it is the main reason I would like to see the military's budget cut, wasteful spending.

The last time I looked at it, the increase in tuition for U of I tracked very closely with the decrease in state financing. It is pretty sad.
