I was next door this morning at the company adjacent to us. I asked where Fred was his boss told me he quit/got fired because he is off the wagon as he put it. was in detox for 3 days and got out in the morning. He showed up for work that day already a few drinks in. The boss asked me if I ever talked to him, and could not understand a word he says.. that is true, but I didn't think it was because of booze.. how do you not smell it on him ? wow.. that kind of life just has to suck I like my beer, but I can wait unitl I get home

Yes, but it's much more common for them to just come in drunk. Or high, or under other influences. But not in a long time have I seen it.

Other co-workers, heck yeah. When i was still on-call, i worked an 8am-4pm shift with one of the full time bartenders. he came in a total wreck. Bloodshot eyes, shaking hands...could barely put together a rum and coke. He told me he'd be back in a little while. This was 8:05am. At 8:45 am he was back, and it was a full 180...he was fine, smiling, joking, makin drinks like a pro. Little did I know he went to a storage area with a cup of ice, grabbed a bottle of Bushmills off the shelf and polished off half of it.

The owner of my company has a bit of a drinking problem but has reduced it some over the years, mostly due to medical reasons. Several months ago he bought an old bowling alley and put a bar in it. Over this past weekend he killed a company car with a little drunk driving.

Of course. The financial guy at my company in Chicago was the best. He made me more money than the rest of the company put together some weeks, but he was a total drunk. By noon every day he was blotto. Going to lunch with him was an experience, he would polish off 6 or 7 Manhattans while eating a salad. Never tried to hide it, never lied about it, went home after lunch every day. Didn't care, he rocked at his job. Sadly, he died very young (58) from a massive heart attack. Not sure if the drinking did it, but it probably didn't help. I've worked in the food service industry for years after I retired from the Navy, so I had plenty of drunks working for me over that time. Everything from the total lush who got messed up all the time and didn't care who knew it, to the much more common "secret drinkers" who thought no one would notice. Some I kept on because their good days outweighed their occasional bad ones, most I had to let go. Never really understood the whole drunk at work thing. I was a total lush and raging alcoholic for about 7 years and I never went into work messed up (Hungover to hell yes, drunk no). The thought of being at my job while messed up horrified me. When I started missing days so I could keep drinking, I stopped drinking so much. Big wake up call.

My brother was a lifelong alcoholic. He lost many lucrative jobs because of his addiction. My husband and his business partner would always lunch at the chinese resturant next door with clients. At one point their running tab was in the $20k range. No one ate.

Yup. That would be me... Not so much anymore.
When I was working for the brewery I worked for I would go to the bar across the street (where there bartender had a thing for me) and would get free drinks. I would cross the street to start my shift at least 3-4 drinks i, (usually vodka redbulls) plus a shot of some mixer. When I got to work I'd drink a glass or 2 of water, and then do beer shots with the bartender. I was pretty damn good at my job, so if they ever noticed they ignored it.
Now that I'm back in an office and working at a baby store, I don't really drink as much as I used to.. Sometimes I go with my bosses at the office and we have a drink or two, but other than that, my drinking is limited to the weekends/my days off.

i work as a video/film editor for tv, and when i worked night shift one of our other "veteran" editors, a guy in his 50s who was the most creative dude I've ever met, used to drink a 6-pack a night and do a hit of Mary Jane about once an hour. his cuts always came out amazing, he depended on the stuff to be creative.

I've had a drink once or twice at lunch but it was usually for a special occasion. (aka, I survived the department meeting without strangling someone). It was never enough to even buzz me though. Takes a bit more than 1 mojito for that.

Scarily enough, I knew a chick back when I was a lifeguard that would come into work high on ecstasy on occasion. A few other guards probably came in tipsy too, but if they did I never heard about it. I've never seen or heard it here at this job, but it wouldn't surprise me if I had been on a late-night emergency conference call and someone was a few drinks in. I can't blame them in that case, though, because they were technically off-hours. At my old job when I was younger I'd come in hung over and be fine in an hour or two, but as I got older the hangovers lasted longer so my drinking during the week has lessened and lessened. At this job I have to be a rockstar at all times so I just don't get drunk during the week at all anymore - more days than not I don't have anything, or if I do it's just a glass of wine. Lately, I haven't even been getting drunk on weekends. I can't stand being hung over any more.

Have you known someone who would get drunk at work?

At my first job there was a bunch of meth and drunks over there. They used to actually drive fork lifts around. Was in a HVAC facility that was unionized and in a VERY poor city

We drink a lot as part of my job, so technically yes. I guess the more I'm around it, the more in control I've become though. There are at least a hundred open bottles in my office and another 50-100 cases at any given time nearby. If I wanted to drink, I could but I don't.

Nope, we're a business development firm. I mostly work with alcoholic beverage brand/product development. I work directly with the manufacturers and I get to simultaneously work on my own brands: a whiskey, vodka and tequila.

Only back in the 80s when liquid lunches were kinda normal. We even had one guy get so drunk at lunch that when we got back, he went in his office, closed his door, and slept away the entire afternoon. That type of thing went out of style probably around '86, though. Haven't seen that kind of behavior since.

geez... you would think you would get sick from drinking all that mouthwash
Jezus no kidding. Just mix yer vodka with peppermint schnapps or something.
yeah it was kind of funny in the morning the mouth wash was the normal blue color and by the end of the day it was clear but it never got any emptier. his hands would shake so bad you couldnt read what he wrote until after lunch and by that time he was trashed.[/quote] good Lord, I'd think his stomach and liver would aim for his mouth and try to make a break for it
