We need a high speed rail line. A lot of people would choose that over putting up with all the BS involved in flying these days.

I would much rather take a high speed train and spend a few hours more getting somehwere than deal with getting nickle and dimed by the airlines. The reason our domestic passenger rails are in the state they are in is from lack of upgrades and working on shoe string budgets. Modern rail infrastructure would go along ways to solving most of the problems Amtrak has. Yes, there will still be safety screening but i have no doubts to the popularity of such a option.

We are still suffering from the infrastructure bubble implemented by FDR and Eisenhower. We cannot afford the infrastructure we have, what we do not need is an attempt to flush money down the crapper trying to re-inflate the bubble.

The infrastructure we built under FDR (like the Hoove Dam) is what helped propel us into the leadership role we still benefit from. Not investing in it, is one reason our industrial capacity and competitiveness is in such decline, of course transportation being just one infrastructure element amongst others that need investment.

Possibly. Competitive labor costs is another. It's tough to compete with the cost of labor in third world toilets. Maybe if we stopped dropping frickin bombs everywhere for a few decades at least, we could spend a few trillion dollars here on new roads, bridges, rails, whatever it takes to allow us to move goods and people more efficiently. But yeah, I can always dream.

Yours is the incorrect statement. It is not incorrect to say "a lot" of people would choose that over putting up with all the BS involved in flying these days. How many or would it be more efficient is a separate question.

They can't even make it work for the New York City to Washington D.C. corridor. There to people prefer a 45 minute flight. I think that the people who pine for American rail have never spent any real time traveling this country via the road. If they did they would understand that we just aren't suited to a high speed rail solution. Airline travel is much more cost and time effective.

This. A widespread high speed rail system would never work in this country, flying is just more efficient and quicker even including the time the TSA is grabbing your because they think it might be a weapon.

Certain corridors can benefit from High Speed rail, but not all. "For long distance travel, Americans rely on their cars and the airlines." "This reliance has led to massive congestion along major transportation corridors like I-95 in the Northeast Corridor. Today, businesses and commuters lose $115 million each year in wasted time and fuel and spend four billion hours per year stuck in traffic. 60 percent of the urban road miles of Interstate 95 are heavily congested. 70 percent of our nation's chronically delayed flights originate in the New York-New Jersey airspace. There is simply no more effective way to alleviate congestion of our roads and airways and get people to their destinations than rail." "The Acela Express, Amtrak's high speed rail service along the Northeast corridor, has shown a positive return from its New York-to-D.C. route." http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/04/13/high.speed.rail.fact.check/index.html

The problem with rail travel is where do you go when you get off the train? The rental car agencies need to setup at the train station. The way things are setup right now in Seattle, we have three rail options, and none of them connect to each other. it's just plain retarded. Edit: I mean 4, I forgot the god damn Monorail!
