Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other Internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States will soon launch new programs to police their networks in an effort to catch digital pirates and stop illegal file-sharing. Major ISPs announced last summer that they had agreed to take new measures in an effort to prevent subscribers from illegally downloading copyrighted material, but the specifics surrounding the imminent antipiracy measures were not made available. Now, RIAA chief executive Cary Sherman has said that ISPs are ready to begin their efforts to curtail illegal movie, music and software downloads on July 12. Ironically enough I just received a letter from my ISP/Television provider saying that my price was going up about $10 a month due to programming costs. They are, however, raising my internet speed to compensate for it.

yup. someones gotta pay for this and you can bet they won't cut their own profit. also interesting to note is new isp companies can't spring up to offer more "freedom". the way the internet is regulated right now if another company wanted to offer cable based internet in an area they would have to buy out the current cable company. i'm pretty sure its regulated so you cannot have two cable or dsl companies operating in the same area. so people will also be left without choices to protest it if they want to keep their internet. this happens anytime you give someone a monopoly on a service or good, they can stranglehold you with it. so we'll all be paying more for worse internet soon.

LOL sued by who? FWIW going the legal route is far less likely to amount to any real change. They can run their network any way they want and give the boot to any user they feel like. Internet access from any one of those companies isn't a right you know... you are bound by the terms of their service the moment you become their customer. They can (and have) kicked subscribers for abuse of their terms of service and nobody can tell them otherwise. Vote with your feet or STFU and figure out a way around it if you wanna keep pirating. The RIAA complains to the FCC and the FCC bitchslaps the ISPs... that is the way of things. http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9145198/RIAA_tells_FCC_ISPs_need_to_be_copyright_cops January 15, 2010 11:59 AM ET

you won't have the option to change services to a isp that allows more freedom in its use. our country is in a stranglehold by the current isp's thanks to the regulations on ISP territories. a company can't simply offer its services if another dsl or cable company is already in place in an area. i knew eventually this would lead to problems like this, it was only a matter of time. isp's are already gouging their customers and will soon be raising prices again to offset the cost of this. no one will be able to do jack about it in protest other than abandon the internet entirely.

and just how WOULD they be able to offer those services? I'm interested. the wire on the pole is the wire on the pole only one company CAN own it. Do you think that every provider is suddenly going to automagically create some fantastic fiber-coax network from the ground up in even just major cities (in hopes of recovering the insane costs at some kind of relatively swallowable timeframe) forget suburbia and the outlying areas?

That's odd. Here you can only get Verizon or Bright House. If you go to the next county over they only have AT&T and Comcast.

This will be simple to circumvent, they catch you by the name of the file, and maybe the properties of the file. So we start using pig latin (for example sake) for file names and they won't be finding any copyrighted content being shared.

This is way more intrusive than any law would ever be... you are protected from the government going through your crap via the 5th amendment (they at least need judicial approval)... you are protected from the company via your contract or ToS. I am guessing that the RIAA threatened to sue them as knowingly aiding and abetting criminal activity or something... probably threatened them with a huge number... some figure that represented how much gets stolen.

eh.. probably nothing so overt as that. All the RIAA had to do was lobby the FCC hard enough and the government would do it for them. If I recall though, Comcast and Time Warner were on the list of companies supporting SOPA.

If a law is passed and the government is claiming that you broke it they at least need a certain threshold of proof to convince a judge that you did indeed break the law before they could start really going through your computer for proof/bug your stuff to see what you are dling. No such restraint on private people... edit: just noticed my mistake... 4th amendment protection not 5th.

They've been talking about doing this for ages (and in Canada too). Since the government can't figure out how to regulate it, can't figure out how to police it, they do this...they tell the ISPs it's their keesters on the line. If a user on their service is doing illegal activity it's up to the ISP to find them and stop them. Failure to do so is becoming 'an accomplice' and they're threatening to go after the ISPs for the copyright fees and illegal activities. Working for an ISP I can tell you...I can do exactly what they ask. Filter the hell outta the net, and cut off anyone in the wrong. We're in a far better position to enforce the law, we have the tools and knowledge to do it...but we're not cops. I don't give two ****s what users do (besides kiddie porn, that's gross and you need to diaf). I get "User has violated copyright law" emails all day, every day. I have NO legal obligation (at this point) to work as Paramount or MGM's cop. So I just delete this crap, and users go on oblivious. That's your choice, we're providing the medium. If you make a bunch of prank phone calls, it's not the phone companies fault, the government can't go after them for not stopping the person using the phone. I don't get why it's different with computers... If the cops come in with a warrant for customer information, I will provide the information. Aside from that, I will not give out client info even to police officers, and I will not work for other companies to police the internet. I hope that attitude never changes...but it sure feels like it's about to.

I think its kinda funny too tbh. frankly I barely ever do such a thing but when I do its because whatever Im wanting isnt easily available otherwise. Companies have the right to protect themselves though and for Comcast I can tell you its coming down to money. Odds are if you werent ripping down gigs of data you wouldnt use the service as much yet will still be paying the same amount... thus if they squeeze pirating they squeeze user bandwith usage. this also means neighborhood saturation wouldnt be as heavy thus needing less split nodes which mean engineering for plant gets involved and equipment and planning and lots of money DOESNT need to get spent.
