Really, they are both pretty damned excellent. Here's what I said about it back when the US version was released.

It is not the first film made on this book; a Swedish adaptation, also by the same name, was released broadly overseas in 2009 and had a limited release in the United States. There has been some grumbling among film enthusiasts on why a US film had to even be created. It is certainly true that the Swedish film was extremely well done and stands very well on its own. There was nothing to correct or to do "better".
However, after seeing this US adaptation of Larsson's work, I think it must be argued that it is also simply excellent. I saw and enjoyed the Swedish film perhaps a year ago, and I feel the US version also offers the same deep and rich tone, the same powerful and multi-layered mystery, and also invokes the same strong and memorable characters. Instead of complaining about the United States' incessant need to remake foreign films in English, perhaps we should just sit back and be happy that we now have two excellent adaptations of Larsson's great book. Go see them both — one of them is in theaters, right now.

I read somewhere that the director of the original is a huge Fincher fan and tried to make his adaptation very close to Zodiac in tone. Which makes Fincher's remake even more redundant than it otherwise would've been. There's at least one (very, very small) plot point that is better put together in the remake, but otherwise... unless you're a NIN fan with a phobia of subtitles, the original is perfectly fine. It's also available to watch in its uncut form (sort of a Lord of the Rings extended edition kind of deal) on Netflix. Haven't seen that version though.

imo, in a movie, it's a cop out to use rape as a medium to illicit emotion from the viewer.
it's too "pro-wrestling" and lacks class.

Films are a "safe" medium in which to explore all aspects of humanity; that includes the most foul and awful. Rape is, of course, awful.
I believe the rape scenes in both adaptations are simultaneously bold and horrible, and I also believe they have a value by shining a light on just how terrible the crime of rape is.

Netflix instant has an extended version of the three Swedish movies in the series. Adds about 90 minutes to the three. I watched the first two parts. There is some added dialogue and such that adds to the movies, but, in the first one there's a side plot that goes completely nowhere. Worth watching if you are a fan of the films, though.
