Bought my wife something for like 39-49 for my wife at target a few weeks ago. Flash games ramp the temp up pretty insane. The cooler I got already seems like its unable to pull its weight any longer. Any suggestions for a cooler for a laptop that runs at least 3-5 hrs straight at times?

The brand I got her from Target was a Targus by the way. She finally let me take a look at it after trying to troubleshoot it on her own. Turns out she had it upside down so the fan was blowing down, and the laptop was resting on the completely sealed off padded side. Got it working right and still decided even when working correctly, it doesn't cool it off as much as I would think it should? It seems to rest on both cores at 70C with the cooler going.

Since Coolers are universal they dont always have the fan in the most optimal position to help cool.
My suggestion would be to find one that has an external power supply. The USB one means your pulling from the unit creating some of the heat.

I think the fans are mostly worthless. The most effective thing is just being sure the laptop vents are clear and not being obstructed or clogged. So if you have the laptop on a flat desk, I don't think most laptop coolers will do much of anything at all. If the laptop us being used on a bed or laptop, they'll help by providing a flat surface.

I bet your vents are clogged. Get some canned air on that bitch! 
Most laptops are designed to efficiently keep themselves cool. If yours is failing to do so, there's blockage. Internal or external.
I have to say that's one of the things I love about my Asus G73, no underside vents. It pulls the air in from the top and spits it out the back. Good design imo.

what type of laptop? if its an I7 series cpu 59-70degrees under load is about normal. 70 is still kinda on a high side for me but still ok. just make sure your vents have a easy airflow and clean any dust.
coolers dont really help much when you already have a flat surface.

She sits the laptop on her lap in a recliner with a wool blanket wrapped around her, so no it's not in breathable conditions, hence in her case a cooler is needed. The cooler is working fine now and her laptop is running smoothly and not overheating again.
