Kindle is a good choice. Their books are reasonable and the choice is good. I wanted something a little more so I got my Zoom. The Book Nook is also a good choice but if I was to buy today, for a reader only, it would be a Kindle.
I’m using the Kindle software for my books now. Good type and less strain on the battery than some of the others.

I'm reading the The Malazan Book of the Fallen series right now, what I hate is when there is a series of books on Kindle and they will have one in the middle they don't carry. It happened to me when I was reading CS Forrester's Hornblower series.

I think there's an official Kindle app for phones. Don't see why you wouldn't be able to access what you bought on both. Though... Amazon's MP3 policy is horse shit so it's possible they only allow you to download it once.

I keep my kindle under 100 books or so. Every time I load a really big library on it, it starts crashing.
When I'm done with a book, I delete it immediately. Stuff to read later just sits in a folder on my desktop, and when I plug in to charge I'll transfer another handful of books at the same time.

Same way I afford movies and music, I borrow them from other people. Difference is, novels are so tiny that 30,000 of them fit on a $20 thumb drive.

I got rid of several thousand paperbacks shortly after I got my Kindle. Scores of paper-case boxes and several bookshelves full. Got half a room back in exchange for a few gigs of storage space.

Kindle = fail.
I have the kindle software (free) on my iPhone and I read on it all day long. Riding the subway, eating lunch, taking a dump. It's always with me and you wouldn't believe how much text fits on the screen.
I saw a guy on the subway with a Kindle and he had to have a separate bag for it. When I got my iPhone the Kindle was the same price.
Also, the first Kindles needed a light to read in the dark, not so with my iPhone.
I have an Ipad as well and while it's good for reading on, it's become my main gaming machine (Dungeon Hunter for the win!) as well as checking my websites (mmajunkie, huffington post, etc) on lazy mornings.
