Pet class and cleric. Not even a contest for anything but pet classes. People will argue which pet class and they will all have valid points. But anyone who names something without a pet is lying to you.

Heal proc for pet making it's own heal aggro. A fully buffed pet, even without ML9, that has a red heal proc can sit in the middle of a cloud of blue and often even yellow or orange cons quite safely. There is almost no limit to the number of greens you can stack on a pet buffed like that. Not that anyone cares about greens. Mostly it's about an ML9 pet tanking an epic mob and occasionally firing off heal proc for the extra aggro so the Cleric is safer tossing another heal in.

Asber put it right "with valid arguments".
It all depends on what your farming and whether your pling "your" toons or "others" toons.
Cleric is "must" for pet farming imo, due to the efficiency that a heal proc adds to your pet taking more/bigger mobs.
Cab is my favorite farming toon as well, ml9 Sim is just ill. (my breakdown as to why is in this post http://www.gaheris.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=464).
However if your trying to solo (2 toon) farm keeps, I would say chanter/ward is prolly better than cleric/cab.
If your pling others, ward/sm (supp) is prolly best at the Finliath spawn in Breifine.
Alot relies on personal preference and determinance on what your trying to farm to be totally honest.

The following duo is not good at PL but for doing tough mobs it's hard to beat:
Warden + Paladin s/s (+ bot following ungrouped). The Paladin can tank like there's no tomorrow with his own abilities but with PBT, perma Celerity, the Warden guarding him it's unreal. In trouble? the warden can also heal him and you can fight in his heal/power font.
I used to run this with my friend and we used to have fun trying to find hard mobs to test ourselves against them. Yes we both hit with wet noodles but I think it's more fun than a focus shield pet class.
Anyway, this was just after ToA release, things might have changed a little.

Best duo for Farming....
For uber uber uber mobs and gear, Typically a Focus Pet Class and Cleric. Cleric runs into stiff competition now with the changes, as Healers and Bards both get same heal proc, and have speed besides. Cleric overall has better buffs for pets, excepting that a Healer can make your pet swing really really fast.
If you are farming efreets a cabby might be your best bet as they have good speed and can get both blue mobs down before they disappear.
Other than that though I'd say none have an advantage, if you go Healer SM though you get all the best of a focus pet, as SM can cast the buffs a Healer can't for the pet, and healer can cast celerity. Caveat: There's a cap on pet buffs that can be over capped from player class buffs, so cleric might win out here even still.
For Farming Keeps:
Melee Dps and Warden are king.
They are the fastest. Typically you want Zerk,Savage, or BM but even a Merc is fine here. Any tank class is good too, but the melee dps preferred for seiging, and conserving HoA charges.
For scale farming or PLing:
The new quests in NF are best for that. But if you wanted to do it the old way, two tics reign supreme.
Make assist macros for the tics, and burn away. Any scale mob lower than level 60 will die before it reaches your tics if you have a decent template.
A close Second to two tics, and it's more style than efficiency is a tic/sorc. Sorc can pull with heat debuff Tic kills almost as fast as if it's two tics. Sorc can mezz adds, and also gets a pet. Nice additions, besides being able to put out some dps of it's own and have on demand crack.
Lastly PLing prolly can get by with a Blocker and PBAoEr. Warden/Bain or warden/sm etc. Have to go high shield and that's sad when you play warden. Warden become a bot not a player at 50 shield.
Alternatly on pling without a tank, you can use Animist/Mentalist duo. This duo rocks it without danger to the casters, has lots of options, and don't really need a rezzer. Caveat: if you have lowbies you are pling, make sure one of them can rezz the ones that get one-shotted. If you can't keep them from getting one-shotted, this duo isn't for you. Just a good duo that doesn't need a healer/buffer or a tank, so it opens up some interesting possibilities.

For me the best, enchanter+valk.
PBAE is the most destructive spell, but the enchanter has a speed and a focus (and of course pet ML9).
With a good valk (50 shield+11+RR5+10%) you can easily pull 10+ red, or take a lot of purple, and she can heal without stop blocking with HoT and PBAE heal (for yellow 30+, even mau in stygia/atum are not enough to stop casting with the chanter !) (the pet can heal too). For boss, you have ML9 + focus.
For buf, you have realm buf.
ML9 + HoA are very effective.
Valk can help to hit high level mob (thousand storms).
Valk has ML10 (25% absorb) and ML2 (10% heal/mana).
Valk + RA5L can help a lot against keep lord or sometimes with wrong repop !
Thus you can eradicate yellows & red, kill purple like a butcher, kill boss with your ML9+focus, what ask the people !

pet farming is the second most boring form of combat. the first being healer class combat.
for that reason i would argue against cleric + pet.
if i was to play again itd probably be two accounts. account 1 would look something like this: enchanter, valk, warrior and some kind of for fun class. account 2 would look something like this: shaman, cleric, druid, warden and maybe bard. im probably off on a couple of the classes since all the changes since i quit. but basically id want a pet+cleric, pbae+shield, shield+buffer, fun+support. the first three combos would be so i could easily get the things i want for the last combo.

In terms of efficiency:
For farming big mobs, it's an ML9 pet plus Cleric. Necro/Cleric comes second.
For PL, it's Servant Necro plus Cleric. SM/Warden comes second with the right camp. Of course, not much beats the afk Bain/shield tank at Grogans in terms of how little effort you need to put into it.
For keeps, it's PBAE SM/Warden. ML9 pet/Cleric comes second. There's decent arguments on 13 seal keeps for Tank/Shaman or Tank/Druid as well.
If you are not trying to be superman, most classes can get decent amounts of scales, seals, and glass by killing blue up to red cons in Agramon, Laby, ToA and epic zones. With decent gear the limiting factor is often how fast your camp spawns. My favorite Afrit farm duo was Animist/Warden, for Laby or Agramon seals it was Tic/Bard, for epic zone scales it was Necro/Cleric.
