how do you take a font (that has been rendered into outlines) and make the entirety of the whole, appear checkered? by checkered i mean like a picnic blanket or a finish line for a race

lock it, then make 5 boxes and 4 boxes, group them, c/p until you cover the whole word then unlock. group all, and combine?

i see what you mean, what about starting with a gridded box then overlaying the font (in this case an outlined M) then removing the elements outside of the letter M after merging the checkered elements with the font (does that make sense?)

Window > Swatch Libraries > Patterns > Decorative > Decorative_Geometric 2 second one in is a checker swatch which you can use as a fill. Or you could arrange your own checkered boxes on the M the way you like, select them all sans M, click edit > define pattern, and that will create a swatch which you can use as a fill.
