I've read a lot of great series, but stand alone, adventure, action, characters, intrigue. Dune is hard to beat.

I can not, can NOT, stand Pinky and the Brain's bastardization of FH's work. The prequels and the 7th book 'based off notes' is so terribly bad...I can't stand them Grim. I can't handle them. If I could burn them all in a fire...I would. There are 6 books. Frank goes sort of existential in books 5,6 but they still have charm and depth. The Honored Matres sex-enslavement power...was a new chapter of interesting...not exactly what you think of when you think 'Dune' but still 1000x better than what his son is writing.

ah...your one of "those" i did not like the final two books following up the original series, they pretty well sucked. all of the prequels however i thought were excellent.

Yeah, Dune is a great stand alone. Dune Messiah is a fairly boring (albeit short) book. Children of Dune is pretty awesome. God Emperor of Dune is a hard read...not a lot happens, but if you can get into the mindset of what i'd be like to live under that sort of tyranny...under a God who can see the future, who can never die, who can never be surprised or tricked or killed....makes the story that much more intense. Heretics of Dune - bizarre, sex-slaves, nuked planets, super-speed Miles Teg...it's a very very different feel. I mean, no Fremen?! Just Fremen museums. Argh. Chapterhouse: Dune - only interesting because FINALLY, after thousands of years, the Bene Gesseritt are FINALLY worth their salt. Redemption for them. Liked this much more than HoD, but still it's a tough read.

messiah and children should have been a single book imo. to my mind the "classic" dune, that is what makes dune epic, is contained in those three books.

/channels Murron: Truly. The first three are basically 'cannon'. You could argue GEoD is too, but it's a transition book and has a very unique feel. it's like: Dune -unfinished Paul storyline (Dune Messiah) -continuation of the beloved storyline through his kids and wrapping up Alia storyline (Children of Dune) -last desperate grasp/finishing main Dune storyline: "The Golden Path" (God Emperor) -the why the Golden Path was important [we're very barely holding onto 'Dune' here, just the Duniverse...] (Heretics of Dune) -continuation of HoD, why Leto almost ended the BG but they turn it around...finally (Chapterhouse: Dune) Dune + Dune Messiah COULD have been the same book. Or yes, he could have combined Messiah with Children like the miniseries did. It worked.

i use those to fall asleep at night best readers i can remember right off the top of my head were Claudia Black, Tim Curry and James Marsters. Marsters does the dresden files and while he was kinda stiff for the first few books he really got better as the series went on. Claudias voice is just candy for the ears and Tim Curry did an old recording of some of the Dune prequels and was just awesome with getting into each of the characters and making them come alive rather than just reading the dialog.

The original Dune changed the way I view the world. It added a lot of complexity to my view of relationships, choices, destiny verses self-determinism, energy, and had huge sandworms that could eat a bus. As an ecologist the world of Dune and the people who made their way in it was inspiring. It sounds trite - but I believe it. Then Frank's son went and effed it up.

the second book isn't as good as the first. it's not as engaging and even less happens. but it's the middle book and generally, middle books suck by comparison. i have faith that the 3rd book will be just as good as name of the wind! i'm going to start rereading them again soon i think. i have to get out of this rut where i'm not really reading as much and reading rothfuss always puts me back into it.

The Hobbit is my favorite book...although 99% of the books I have ever read were not for pleasure, so I haven't read a lot of books that have the potential to top it. I'm reading game of thrones series on my kindle now, and when I finish them (or get bored if that's how it turns out like I have heard), I will be moving on to Ender's Game, Dune, and a couple others.

Tigana and Ysabel are the two GGK's I haven't gotten to yet. I own both and am working my way toward them. Sorry I can't help! All I know though is that while Fionavar is fairly weak imo, The Sarantine Mosaic and The Last Light of the Sun are my favorite books of all time, narrowly beating out GRRM's ASOIAF.

Semper Fi by W.E.B. Griffin It may not be a classic or an epic book like Dune but if I want to just lay around a read I can always read this and it usually ends with me reading the whole series.

This is another favorite of mine. Not too partial to Crichton, but this was a work of great merit that is unfairly overshadowed by his more popular works. I also really liked the movie.

Dune is very good, but I also think it is very long winded. Though the book is far superior to the movie. By the time I got thru reading the 3 books I was pretty fatigued and knew I would never read them again.

Impossible to answer with one book, I read hundreds of them a year and have for decades. By age when I loved them: ..<15 Have Spacesuit Will Travel....Robert A Heinlein 15-20 Stranger in a Strange Land....Robert A Heinlein 21-25 The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch...Phillip K Dick 26-30 God Bless you Mr. Rosewater...Kurt Vonnegut 31-40 On Hundred Years of Solitude...Gabriel Márquez 41-50 American Gods...Neil Gaiman 51>.. Armor by John Steakley if only a single book. Series would be Howard's Conan.
