Sweet, another full month where we can victimize and alienate ourselves from everyone else. 
How about celebrating what everyone achieved no matter what their race is, all year round?
So many people on my list are like WARBARGL WE NEED THIS MONTH, THEY TOOK EVERYTHING ELSE FROM US.
And im like.. wtf do you mean? what did they take from us? Have you looked at native americans recently? THEY got everything taken from them and even THEY don't get a full month dedicated to them. Get over it, everyone got mod on at one point in time in history.

I'm not saying African-American historical figures are uniquely ignored. But the existence of Black history month is based on the failure of most history classes to teach inclusive history. Not on some sort of oppression ranking system. The fact that steps have been taken to the counter act ignorance of one ethnic groups contribution doesn't mean that we're at some sort of ideal or that every other ethnic group is appropriately represented.
I concede that the ability to name 15 historical figures doesn't prove much. I would be down for months recognizing important historical figures of other ethnic groups, who's history is often ignored.

That really only reinforces his point, you realize? When I was taught History in high school, I was taught virtually nothing of significant contributions by prominent African Americans. Granted, that was awhile back. This may have changed. I remember, for the most part, Harriet Beecher Stowe (not black) and Frederick Douglas. Oh, yes, and MLK. 
Which is why I think his point is that African Americans (Your list aside, I'm sure Spaniards could name some Spanish figures ) should be included all the time - not just in February.
Finally, half of Elo's list includes recent entertainers or sports figures which again reinforces his point. Heh.

Meh teaching about black historical figures is a secondary goal of black history month imo. The importance of black history month is more in pointing out the failures of the general history curriculum.

I think the point (or at least what I think) is that that is a bad reason to devote a month specially. It basically validates a system where the contributions of black people are ignored except for a special token period where they are all clumped togehter and talked about.
Black history month is insulting to black people.

That's a valid criticism and there's a discussion to be had there. IMO its a step in the right direction from what came before and something that should be phased out at some point. My biggest pet peeve is that there's whole month dedicated to it. why do we get a special month but others don't ? Either give everyone their own month, or just teach all of the historical figures from ALL races, all year round, and in all history classes.

For example.. November is Native American heritage month in the US.

Until quite recently we had a very small black community, and much of our current black community are descended from Caribbean immigrants who don't really identify with the black american stuff.

Why would I be jelly ? lol black people celebrate it here, it's not an official month celebration.
And I didn't look to black history month to get positive role models in my life, although I can see how it could help with afro americans in the states. We're a little bit more civilized and well mannered compared to our southern brethren .

Alot of first nations make huge royalties. The problem is vast sums of money are stolen from the bands by the chiefs and the tribal councils or various criminal syndicates masquerading as political movements. There is a huge problem with corruption in the reserves and no one wants to address it.

always surprises me how people think there should be equal amounts of time dedicated to each race's contribution to history.
i personally think it should be weighted. Roughly 10% of history can involve some black dude. But it's hard to justify that because black people were omitted from significant events except for slavery until our recent generations.
if you want to learn more, then take an african american history class ... like I did.
(and got an A ~ thank you very much)

Like most things, you get out of black history month what you put into it. When I was a kid I thought it was absolutely moronic. I mean who cares who invented the stoplight? If he wasn't black nobody would. But that's because for a long time they stretched to make it relevant. To try to give anyone somethign interesting to study. When I was in college I thought it made a lot more sense. Looking at the culture and the hardships. The struggles and the triumphs. But that's pretty weighty for elementary school. As it is presented most places, I agree with twinkles.

That really only reinforces his point, you realize? When I was taught History in high school, I was taught virtually nothing of significant contributions by prominent African Americans. Granted, that was awhile back. This may have changed. I remember, for the most part, Harriet Beecher Stowe (not black) and Frederick Douglas. Oh, yes, and MLK.

We should spend the money spent on black history month to incorporate "black history" into our text books that for the most part only teach white history from a white persons view point.Unfortunately as usual we are being held back by the brain-dead republican south that keeps trying to go into the opposite direction.(my own backwards state recently tried to get the words "slaves and slave trade" removed from its history lessons)Currently if it isn't taught through the media it will not be taught in the ass-backwards southern US and we'll end up with another generation of ignorant racist redneck republicans (AKA Teabaggers and Ron Paul supporters). It may be distasteful but it is less distasteful than the results of its removal would be.
