It is not just a job. We give up rights that regular citizens retain. There are mandatory retirement ages. We sacrifice many things that civilians do not in trade for these retirement benefits that are being taken from us. We plan for retirement and prepare for a fixed budget that gets ruined by crap like this.

I don't think retirement benefits should be taken away from anyone. Especially those that have served. I was merely responding to the fact that we do not have a draft, that it is a volunteer job for pay.

That's not entirely true. When you sign up, you "trust" the government because you surrender certain rights, and expect that trust to be returned. I'd reply since I have several relatives in service, but the prior response already corrected your mistake.

Military.Com posted: Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy said DoD won't try to change the system for current retirees or serving troops, but she said recasting the benefits for future generations of retirees must be on the table if the department is to get control of its spending. "No one is going to change the contract" of anyone currently serving or who served, Flournoy said, "but we've asked Congress for authority for a commission to look at this holistically to ask the question if we can have a better system."
Of note: No one who made an agreement with the government to get certain benefits is going to have them taken away. Future prospects may, but will have that information available before they voluntarily sign up That this lays at Obama's feet is not necessarily clear. The pentagon is driving this and they are notorious for screwing the troops if it means they get to keep their chauffeur and perks that come with a comfy posting in the pentagon. I won't dismiss out of hand that Obama isn't driving this, but it's also entirely possible this is the doing of the bureaucrats at the pentagon. Remember, a selfish, spoiled bureaucrat in a military uniform is still a selfish, spoiled bureaucrat

It is also very important to DoD's private contractors that funding cuts come from the troops rather than from the cash funnel from the fed to them, and what is important to them is very important to the stooges in the DoD bureaucracy.

And new fed employees (including anyone with less than 5 years of service) are going to have to pay FOUR TIMES (yes, you read that right) as much for our pensions. Meanwhile there's been a salary freeze for the last two years and the proposal to raise salaries by .5% this year was greeted with /RRAAAAAAAAGEEEE from republicans.
It seems like the only thing our government can agree on its cutting the pay and benefits of its workers.

Leave it to Tali to be a shill for those who would reduce the benefits of any military veterans, present and future. Article posted:
Retired Navy Capt. Kathryn M. Beasley, of the Military Officers Association of America, said the Military Coalition, 32 military service and veterans groups with an estimated 5 million members, is fighting the proposed healthcare increases, specifically the use of mean-testing for cost increases. “We think it’s absolutely wrong,†Beasley told the Free Beacon. “This is a breach of faith†for both the active duty and retiree communities. Congressional hearings are set for next month. The Veterans of Foreign Wars on Feb. 23 called on all military personnel and the veterans’ community to block the healthcare increases. “There is no military personnel issue more sacrosanct than pay and benefits,†said Richard L. DeNoyer, head of the 2 million-member VFW. “Any proposal that negatively impacts any quality of life program must be defeated, and that’s why the VFW is asking everyone to join the fight and send a united voice to Congress.â€

The President's military advisors does not equal the veterans' community, VFW, MOAA, or American Legion. The people who have worked hard defending this nation (prior and future) deserve better than reduced benefits. Especially when the civilian contractors will have no reduction, at military personnel expense.

You do understand that adults need to be able to make decisions regardless of emotions. If you're not capable of removing emotion, given the incredible fiscal challenges we as a nation are facing, consider yourself at the childrens' table.
Sometimes, morality MUST take a back seat to pragmatism. We need to cut spending across the Federal Government and NO ONE should be immune.

Ok so the President isn't suppose to listen to those big wigs at the Pentagon on issues pertaining to our Military. Got it! Also - 80% of the Armed Forces support Ron Paul!

It's going to be a great recruiting tool as military veterans tell potential (future) military enlistees/officer HOW the government screwed them over on retirement benefits and how unappreciative civilians are at their service. Find someone else to defend your sorry arses.

I wonder if 80% of the military realizes that 80% of the military wouldn't have jobs if Ron Paul's vision of the military was actually put into practice. You don't need an army as big as the one we have if you don't use it overseas.

You still need to uphold the benefits for those who might serve, and have served. The benefits is really the only reason why any of us served. The respect of serving we have amongst ourselves, it's not like the majority of civilians really give a shit. And it's not like you can give those years of service back to one's life. They are gone, those years spent defending the freedoms many civilians take for granted. -------------------------------- But you are free to have your own opinions on the matter. I came back to the thread simply because Tali said this story was absolutely not true. Tali = debunked dumbass.

Maybe. Although I think a lot of them probably have some fantasy where they will still have their jobs and get paid but not have to be overseas. I wonder how many people realize that if Ron Paul had his way most of them would not have jobs any more.

Gronk posted: Obama to cut healthcare benefits for active duty and retired US military
I'm saying that's a lie. And everything you're posted supports that assertion.
Navy Times posted: The 2.4 million-member American Legion says the budget’s proposals to raise health care fees for retirees and create a commission to study ways to reduce military retirement costs break promises to current service members and send a bad message to future troops. “By increasing, and in some cases quadrupling, health insurance fees for military retirees, you are sending a powerful message to those in uniform and to their families that their decades of service and sacrifice are unappreciated,†said Fang Wong, the the Legion’s national commander, of the Pentagon’s plans for higher Tricare fees for working-age retirees. While Pentagon officials have promised that any potential changes in retired pay would not apply to current service members, Wong said that doesn’t make it a good idea for the military. “Grandfathering benefits cuts merely tells tomorrow’s veterans that their service isn’t as valuable as those who served before them,†Wong said. The president of the Military Officers Association of America called the proposed Tricare fee increases a “breach of faith†and accused the Pentagon of using “bait and switch†tactics because modest increases were approved last year and were believed to be the final word on changes.'

So I read the link. It supports both of my observations. To wit: While Pentagon officials have promised that any potential changes in retired pay would not apply to current service members, Wong said that doesn’t make it a good idea for the military It also does not clear up who the brainchild for the cuts are - whether it's the CIC or the pentagon brass. You can attempt to move the goalposts to 'but we are devaluing our future soldiers!' if you wish, but those were not points you initially mentioned nor was it a point I took on in my response. You debunked nothing.

You are arguing semantics now. This was not a made up story. The whole point of this thread is that military veteran groups ARE upset about the Obama Administration's 2013 Budget proposed reduction in benefits to veterans, present and future. Of course Obama had DoD sign off on it, but that doesn't matter to (present and future) veterans who pay the price for it. Its a bunk deal for veterans, and for anyone considering serving in military in the future.

Dude, the title of the article is 'Cuts proposed to Active Duty Soldiers'. The ARRGLBARRGL in the original source was a result of that bold faced lie. The link is shite and not worth considering. The Navy times and Military.com give much more accurate depictions of what's actually happening. Arguing facts is not semantics btw.

True, Tych, but the last people you want to screw over is the people defending this country. Rome tried to do that, look where it got them. Tali: Navy Times: ""Ryan also opposes proposed increases in co-pays for prescription drugs, something that could raise the cost of a 30-day supply of a brand name drug to $34, up from the current $12."" How won't this affect current active duty soldiers once they retire? Its a benefit reduction all-around.

People join the military for the benefits, not the pay. Reduce those benefits = reduction in recruiting. Unless you suggest a draft. Add in military veterans grumbling about ANY possible reduction in benefits (future or present), around the kitchen table and veteran halls, and you breed a culture of "let someone else serve, not my kids."

actually the original article claimed the same thing: """The new plan hits active duty personnel by increasing co-payments for pharmaceuticals and eliminating incentives for using generic drugs.""" Its a benefit reduction all-around. It's like telling a worker that hey, they will have to pay more once they retire. Its a reduction in their benefits. The ones they signed up for. People sign up for the future benefits they get after service, not for the active duty pay. GI Bill, VA home loan, retirement benefits.

You would never admit you got debunked. You key instead on one item that is debatable, and ignore the rest, declaring the whole article as a lie. Navy Times backed up the general assertion of the Original Article: Future retirees (which are current active duty members) will see reduction in benefits if the proposed budget changes go through. And BOTH the original Article and the Navy Times cite various Veterans groups as being against the proposed reductions. You would never admit you got debunked when you claim the WHOLE THING is a lie. Thats okay, I can live with that.

2. Recruiting will never be a problem, America will never have a shortage of rednecks or poor people.
In all age groups, serving military members are better educated than their civilian counterparts. Furthermore, after serving, veterans make more money than their civilian counterparts. Particularly, a disproportionately high percentage of veterans are small business owners.

I think there needs to be a common sense approach to medical benefits. I wouldn't be happy about paying a monthly fee for my wife but I would understand it, other federal employees do. -This should be paid by pay grade/family size. If you've lost an appendage/massive trauma medical care automatic to you and your spouse and minor children for life. After retirement pay what ever the national average is for your size family (children 17 and under) for health care, until 68 then have the payment removed. If you live within 50 miles of a VA or military hospital you must be treated there for routine check-ups and services they offer.
