I haven't played it (and neither have you) but everything they are talking about suggests the combat system is pretty much the opposite of that. They have manual dodging, intricate cross-class comboing, and only 10 usable skills at a time. What they are going for is basically the opposite of the "mash lots of abilities" school of MMO design rift had.

They address this in the video. The "Realms" are going to have to starve the keeps of resources which cannot be upgraded/repaired without them. It is fairly easy to get the doors down when they are not repaired. Resources have to be protected along the way to the keep as they are being delivered through the normal routes (I really like that idea instead of having players carry them a la DAoC also because that should prompt some constant side skirmishes to protect resources). So far as the Seige Golem, I got the idea that it is very expensive to build resource wise.

The supply resource system is actually one of the cooler new features they have put into the RVR formula IMO.

Also, buying and hauling wood to repair keep doors was a major PITA, but also motivated folks to take DF for bestest gold farming to buy wood to repair keep doors. I remember I started Armor crafting so I could repair doors. Sheesh that was a long time ago.

Knowing only the little expressed in this thread, I am ok with the general supply idea. It sounds like you might have standard wagon train type convoys that all sides could raid and/or defend, sort of an expansion of DAoC's individual frontier quests but made open and continuous.

They show a supply base and caravan at the end of the video IIRC. Basically you take the base and then it spawns a caravan every 10 mins that goes to the keep. If it gets there without being jacked it adds supply to the keep's supply pool.

Various classes have leaps or pulls or teleports to close distance. Others have access to skills to gain the Swiftness boon which gives a temporary +33% run speed buff. Then there is stuff like the Guardian's force fields which can cut off escape routes. Finally, there are all the standard root, stun, knockdown, etc abilities to stop someone from running.

Every class has access to 'swiftness' in some form. That's GW2 speed. Every class also has access to the 'cripple' condition as well - the snare. You just need to include the skills in your build if you feel they are required.

I have learned when studying which class and spec to choose for an MMO PvP character, always look for mobility and CC abilities, which is what wins fights, not raw power. Also, keep away from pet classes no matter how tempting.

Various classes have leaps or pulls or teleports to close distance. Others have access to skills to gain the Swiftness boon which gives a temporary +33% run speed buff. Then there is stuff like the Guardian's force fields which can cut off escape routes.
Finally, there are all the standard root, stun, knockdown, etc abilities to stop someone from running.
yeah...i remember how it worked in gw/rift/wow/war
Uh if you couldn't catch someone running away in wow you were awful.

If you only PVPed in BGs in wow you were also awful.
Running away was a problem in DAOC because of DAOC's mechanics. I remember chasing a 40% health cleric all the way from cruach to the alb keep on my bard because I had neither meaningful dps nor snares (I did have speed obviously but there wasn't much point with no dps). But that was becaue of daoc's bad class design and bad mechanics.

For GW1, the group size varied depending on where you were in the world, but was usually 8 for endgame stuff. For GW2, the PVE dungeons are 5 man. Don't believe it is fixed size elsewhere. But they aren't any buffs or such that affect the group, all such things are nearby allies, allies inside the ground targeted AOE, etc. I would guess that such abilities do have some sort of max # of targets built into them to prevent abuse so in practical terms you may want to limit your group size to whatever that is.

PVP in wow was awesome.
RVR was lame (well, nonexistant). Big fights in wow were not very good. Small fights were awesome and took way more skill than small fights in daoc.
Also, world pvp in wow was a blast. If you didn't play on an active pvp server you don't know what wow pvp was like.

So long as you recognize this, you will abandon the unintelligent argument that DAOC had bad class mechanics, was not balanced, etc. It is a shame MMO developers must cater to todays ADHD players who demand their class be good at EVERYTHING, be viable in EVERY situation, wtfpwn in ALL circumstances, have access to EVERY form of skill mechanic in the game. Todays MMO is a far cry from the old school MMO's where you had to gather components for spells like in UO, or skillful interrupt coding in DAOC which makes you think before using skills instead of todays button mashing.

I thought it was fairly obvious we were talking about small scale PVP mechanics. DAOC has bad mechanics for small-scale PVP. They only work in group v group and larger. As you described.
Which is fine for what DAOC was supposed to be. Wow was basically the opposite. Wow has great mechanics for 2v2 up through about 5v5, but more than that and it becomes impossible for any human being to balance all the moving parts intelligently and it just degenerates into a chaotic mess.

all i'm hearing is exceptions..."if you did xxx then you just don't know because xxxx....you had to do this one thing and it was awesome!!" that sounds like fail to me....which of course it is....because no one plays wow for the "awesome pvp" .....my idea of good pvp/rvr is not being pigeon holed into one specific exception

Looking at all these videos and seeing what skills can do I think Melee classes will be on top of the food chain at least during launch. Warriors seem extremely versatile. I may role one as my first toon.

I am a bit concerned with the idea of melee not needing a target. It will just be a mindless AOE-fest if not handled right. I envision wading into a thick battle and receiving damage in every direction from every skill imaginable within a 100' radius. I hope that is not the case.

Ground target AOEs are the only things that need to be targeted. So spells and ranged attacks can be blasted off without thought as well. It looks like it is only the two-handers which are AOE with their "auto-attack" (whatever skill is in slot 1) so any other weapon choices will be cooldown limited in how much AOE they can fire off blindly. So unless two-handed warriors (and maybe rangers and guardians) are FOTM, it shouldn't be mindless AOE.
