They really saved my ass once. Back in the day, I was in Dallas for a meeting, luggage got lost by NorthWest, had to have a suit in a couple hours, they fixed me up. Suit, shirt, shoes, suspenders, everything. Cost me about 3 times what it should have, but hell....at least I got it in time.

You can probably get the same suit cheaper off the rack at a department store. Their sale items are good sometimes though. Same with joseph a banks.

I would not recommend them. I paid $1500 for 2 suits and when I lost weight and needed to have them altered again they tried to rape me. I pitched a bitch and told them they had charged me for that when I bought them and promised all future adjustments were free. They finally relented. But I won't buy anything else there now.

Every small town has a master tailor in it. Stay away from Dept and Chain stores. Goto a little mom and pop place. Stay away from bridal stores and rent a tux places too. You might pay a little above the dept store prices, but you will get WAAAAY better quality and the suit will fit him perfectly.

My husband had a shop in Los Angeles he bought everything at for years. I'd love to find one like that. There will be no master taylor out here. Maybe one of his friends know, or one of the nerds at work know good places closer than Sacramento.

I'm curious what people consider "price raping" in terms of alterations. A lot of people balk when you tell them it'll cost $10+ for a simple pants hemming- that's pants with no lining and no cuffs. They think "all you have to do is cut and sew!" but it's so much more than that. Not only do you have to take the time to measure for the alteration itself (best done when the garment is on the person), and then make sure it's done just right (trust me, you don't just want to zip through it quickly and find out later you ruined the item), and then take the time again for the customer to try the item on after it's been altered, to be sure it looks right. There's always the possibility that it'll need to be re-done, all under the same $10 price umbrella. And that's only for a very simple hem. You start talking about things that take more time (especially garments that are lined, such as suit jackets and the like) and yeah it's gonna cost you more. Now, if part of the price of the suit included free alterations, yeah they definitely shouldn't be charging for that. I also second the whole "take it to a master tailor". You want a real tailored suit, one that fits you like a dream, that's where you want to go.

Men's Wearhouse (and Jos. A. Bank) are both about the same deal. Until or unless you can afford to start paying upwards of $2k for a suit, MW and JAB will both give you just as good a suit as anywhere else in the "inexpensive" suit category. Master tailors are kind of hit or miss. I lived in a town where the tailor was not so hot and where the tailor that worked at Men's Wearhouse 5 miles away knew the guy with the little shop because he got a whole bunch of cleanup work from that guy's screwups...

Indeed- just because a tailor is a "mom and pop" person with a small shop doesn't mean they're going to be good. I'd never bring in an expensive item for tailoring to someone who had never done work for me before. Conversely, not all department store tailors are horrid either. Some of them are very good at what they do.

I don't consider every tailor with a shop a master tailor. Look for reviews, ask around the businessmen in town.

Looks like it will depend on who has the best sale going on. I'd like to stay around $500-750 for suit only.

If you're not spending upwards of $2k on a suit, doing research on a tailor is kind of... well... it doesn't really matter with a suit under that quality. Hell, a solid tailor will probably tell you that there's only so much they can do with a suit of such low to marginal quality... It's like taking your Buick to the Porsche dealer to have a tuneup done... That same little town I lived in had a real honest to goodness cobbler too. Now THAT guy did excellent work and resoled maybe 7 or 8 pairs of shoes for me over the time I lived there, very inexpensively too.

For $2k (plus whatever any alterations would cost) you could probably just go to the tailor and have the suit custom made right from the get-go. http://fashion.whatitcosts.com/custom-suit.htm

I believe that though I've never really had cause to wear more than the sub $2k suit category myself - the tailor with the shop in town that I spoke about above would bitch about "cheap" suits everyone brought him to alter...

Well, people need suits and not everyone can afford a really pricey suit. I'm just basing my custom-price guesstimate off what I know of fabric prices, measurement requirements, amount of fabric needed (plus notions) and time involved making something to a specific fit.

Jos A Bank, tends to have better quality suits than Men's Warehouse. They have some cheap stuff too, but if you watch for the sales you can pick up some nice suits for a pretty good price. Nothing like a $2k+ suit, but nice enough that you don't feel like you are wearing a cheap suit.

1 very nice tailored suit is by far better than 3 okay tailored suits. Most people only need 1 good suit. Spend $1,500 and go to Brooks Brothers. They'll make the suit fits you perfectly. People do notice the difference.

We ended up getting him a real nice Calvin Kline at Macy's for 1/2 off at $350. Big sale right now. $60 ties go on sale tomorrow for $20. We are going back. They don't do tailoring so we'll find one.
