Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Mobile World Congress 2012

GSMA Mobile World Congress officially starts tomorrow. But things are already rolling today with a few announcements and early peeks. Huawei Ascend D Quad There are four ARM manufactures, Texas Instrument, Qualcomm, Samsung, and Nvidia. Huawei will now be joining them by making it's own ARM A9 processor. Their first chip is a quad core A9 running at 1.2 or 1.5GHz. This new chip will be found in the Ascend D Quad phone. A 4.5 inch 1280x720, it's own quad core ARM processor, and 8MP camera. Should be arriving in April. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/huawei-outs-ascend-d-quad/ http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/huawei-adds-home-grown-k3v2-quad-core-mobile-cpu-to-its-arsenal ----- Huwawei Mediapad 10 A new 10 inch tablet. Not a lot of details. It'll have Huawei's own designed quad core CPU mention in the Ascend D phone. They mentioned an HD display. Engadget took that to mean 1080P, though 720P is often refereed to as HD as well. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/huawei-mediapad-10-eyes-on/ ----- Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1 The Galaxy Tab 2... 1GHz dual core Android 4.0 tablets in 7 inch 1024x600 and 10 inch 1280x800 displays. Full details are still not known such as what kind of processor. But these look a LOT like the original Galaxy Tabs released last year, except with very minor cosmetic changes and Android 4.0 installed. I would imagine those that bought the Galaxy Tab last year should be seriously pissed off that Samsung is just repackaging last years model to push out Android 4.0 instead of just updating last year's model. But this is Samsung, they have a long history of doing this crap, so this is no surprise. They make some nice stuff, but will not support it long. http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/02/25/mwc-2012-samsung-unveils-the-galaxy-tab-10-1-again-adds-a-microsd-slot-tacks-a-2-on-the-name-2/ And another 10.1 inch tablet is coming called the Galaxy Note 10.1. A 10 inch Android 4.0 tablet with a stylus, not much more known yet. http://mashable.com/2012/02/26/samsung-has-a-10-1-inch-galaxy-note/ ----- LG Optimus Vu For people that like their phones extra big and extra wide, the LG Optimius Vu. 5 inch phone with a 4:3 ratio 1024x768 display. 1.5GHz dual core with Android 2.3 (hopefully 4.0 by launch I would think). I think it looks nice, just not sure it's the most pocket friendly device for guys though or anyone not carrying a purse. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/26/lg-optimus-vu-hands-on-at-mwc-2012 ----- HTC One X A 4.7 inch 1280x720 phone with capacitive buttons, so no soft key bar covering up any of that large display. The international version is HSPA+ 42 and has a Tegra 3 quad core processor. The AT&T US version will be LTE but uses a Qualcomm S4 dual core processor instead. CNET thinks it's sad the US version isn't quad core. I kinda suspect the S4 Krait might be the better option since early reviews show it easily beating the Tegra 3 in single and dual threaded processes and not much is really highly threaded for phones yet. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13970_7-57382792-78/htc-one-x-is-htcs-quad-core-ics-beats-audio-powerhouse/ ----- ASUS Transformer PadPhone, Transformer 300, and Transformer Infinity First a slight change to ASUS tablet naming scheme. They are dropping replacing the "EeePad" with just "Pad". But everyone ignored that silly part of the name anyway. So moving on... The PadPhone has finally been announced. A 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus phone that fits into the back of a 10 inch tablet that includes a keyboard dock as well. The phone will have a Krait dual core processor, LTE, and 8MP camera. The Transformer TF700 will be known as the Transformer Infinity. This 10 inch tablet has a 1920x1200 resolution Super IPS+ display. The LTE model will have a Krait dual core processor and the wifi model comes with a Tegra 3 quad core (Tegra isn't compatible with LTE). ASUS is also including a lower end Transformer tablet, the 300. It comes with a Tegra 3, the display is 1280x800 IPS (not Super IPS+ like the Prime). Will also come in various colors. No price mentioned. http://www.androidcentral.com/asus-announces-two-new-transformer-tablets-finally-shows-padfone ----- Acer A700 tablet It's the age of 1920x1200 resolution display tablets. The A700 joins the party. Includes a Tegra 3 processor, micro HDMI and micro USB and micro USB. 9.9mm thick, so a bit thicker than the Prime Infinity (8.5mm). http://www.androidcentral.com/hands-acer-iconia-tab-a700 ----- Toshiba 7.7 AT270 Toshiba has a 7.7 inch tablet coming. A nice 1280x800 Super AMOLED display along with a Tegra 3 processor. Micro USB and SD also included. Looks really nice. No price or release date. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/27/that-7-7-inch-toshiba-tablet-we-saw-at-ces-its-called-the-at27/ ----- Qualcomm Gobi Modems Qualcomm and TI have shown off their new 28nm processors using the new A15 ARM architecture. And these dual cores seem to be able to go head to head with Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad core A9 ARM processor. But besides new processors, we have new modems too. Qualcomm's Gobi modem combines HSPA+ 82 and LTE Advanced into a single chip. And since this is also a 28nm chip, it'll mean lower power usage (current 45nm LTE modems are power hogs). The modem is capable of speeds of 150Mbps, but reality will keep your speeds much lower than that. http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/27/qualcomm-outs-new-gobi-modem-chipsets/

Well so far nothing exciting from Samusng. The Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet seems silly, the Galaxy Tab 2 is just last years tablets renamed. Samsung is holding back the Galaxy S III phone until some time after MWC and hopefully they'll actually show their other good stuff then too. ASUS has been busy with the Transformer 300, PadPhone, and a pair of Transformer Infinity tablets. But no mention of that $250 Tegra 3 7 inch tablet. Toshiba brought out a 7.7 inch Tegra 3 tablet. Looks really nice if the price is right. A lot of high end products are coming out with either an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core A9 ARM chip or a Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon Krait dual core A15 ARM chip. A15 is ARM's latest architecture and it seems to be able to go head to head with Nvidia's quad core. And while reading some of these tech blogs you have to be careful of journalist being ignorant of the A15 architecture, they see "dual core" and immediately think it's disappointing. Such as CNET's calling the HTC One X "sad" because the LTE US model uses the Krait dual core instead of Tegra 3 the GSM version has. I'm sad CNET doesn't realize how powerful the Krait is. Not sure I can say what is better yet, a quad A9 or a dual A15, both are quite impressive. Anandtech has a review of the S4 with a comparison against a Tegra 3 tablet. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5563/qualcomms-snapdragon-s4-krait-vs-nvidias-tegra-3 Here is a TI promo video showing it's OMAP 5 dual A15 beating down a quad A9. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5571/ti-posts-omap-5-800-mhz-dual-core-a15-vs-quad-core-a9-13-ghz-video
