Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

2%, 1% and skim aren't on there because they lack the energy density of their whole milk counterpart.

I can see a point on most of those- those items could be just as easily substituted with healthy/healthier alternatives (like fruit instead of fruit juice). However, saturated fats are essential. Not in the quantities that some people consume, but you need both saturated and non-saturated fats for your body to be properly healthy. So bring on the butter, lard, dripping or similar fat! http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/list-49-foods-avoid-includes-seem-healthy-205444461.html Funny, if you stop eating everything on that list, you're mostly left with...let's see...fresh fruits and vegetables, non-processed meats (steak instead of lunchmeat/pepperoni), eggs, and whole grains. Dairy is always kind of a gray area since so many people are affected by it, but you could have that too!

Sure, honey. Let's see: Non-essential: check. You don't NEED honey to function properly. You can get what honey provides from other sources- like fruit. Energy dense: check Nutritionally deficient: check. It's pretty much just sugar. The whole point of the list/article is to educate people who are fooled into thinking these foods are healthier than the 'bad' foods they've been eating. I swear I know people who think they are eating better and being "healthier" and will lose weight by substituting honey for table sugar- and the amount of honey they eat is appalling. WTF really? I think honey is better than sugar just because it's been less processed and because there are some possible benefits to local honey (may be able to help reduce allergies, things like that) but when it comes to providing essential nutritional benefits like vitamins/minerals/proteins/etc, yeah it's totally nutritionally deficient. Your body can turn a LOT of things into glucose for energy, it doesn't need honey.

Actually there are quite a lot of trace things in foods such that it is very good to have a wide variety of things -- including things like honey. If we restrict diets (especially of children) by eliminating whole categories that we think are obesity makers then we will one day find that they are immunodeficient or have other problems because they had a more narrow food focus. It isnt a problem that people eat things -- it is a problem that people are eating too much of the same things... IE chocolate is good for you. A whole chocolate cake is not good for you. A 3 ounce cup of peanuts is good for you. A can of peanuts is not good for you. We will probably find out that raw milk like they are trying to outlaw entirely is good for you in small quantities especially as a child.

I agree with you- I don't think that cutting honey, chocolate, or whole milk (for instance) entirely from one's diet is the way to go...but people freaking need to learn how to moderate. It should be noted though, that all cultures have traditionally eaten different foods in order to supply them with both the macro and micro nutrients needed to survive. Viewed in that light, one could argue that milk and honey aren't essential parts of anyone's diet.
