I'm thinking it would be fun to try, harbor freight has a cheap kit, and my dad will let me borrow an air compressor to try it out.
what kind of stuff have you used it on? was it difficult to learn?

I had on a kids bikini and painted myself everywhere that the bikini didn't cover... then I went home and stood in the doorway looking at my mother and exclaimed. "Where have you been? I've been looking all over for you!" (which is what she was about to say to me.)
I was really lucky that it was latex paint, back then most outdoor paints were lead based still.
I do remember all of this as well, and getting scrubbed raw in the bath afterward too.

I use a double action one on my models

Then after an Oatmeal Cranberry and Double Chocolate,

latex is water based, modern wall/house paint is latex 
its certainly better than oil based paints, need mineral spirits to get them off.

if you buy an airbrush just be careful cleaning the pin. if you bend it or break the tip you'll be stuck having to replace it.
