I just thought I would make a nice positive post for once. Korean food is just spectacular.
I expect this thread to be full of fat people talking about how great the BBQ is and the BBQ is good but it is just a small part of the awesomeness that is Korean food.

I don't think I've ever eaten Korean food. I would love to try the BBQ if it's that good though. I love me some BBQ!! One of the best places I've ever had it was from this place in south end of Hartford, CT call the BBQ Pit and thats exactly what it was. A huge pit with the most awesome BBQ ever.

LA has excellent Korean food. There's some good places in Oakland too.
Although I do prefer the Korean food in Japan and Korea to anything I've got stateside.

Those places arn't usually real Japanese food (people wouldn't understand you if you said you went out for hibachi in Japan - we'd probably say robatayaki or teppanyaki).
But they can still be good in their own way.
Korean BBQ is fun when it's the sort of place that gives you your own hot plate and lets you cook your own food on it. I always liked that as a kid. Fun stuff.

The key with Asian food in America is to look at the people in the resturaunt. If there are lots of Asian people eating there it will almost certainly be good.
The white person only Asian places can also be good (typically in a non-authentic but tasty way) but it is much rarer.
It is one of those few places where it makes absolute sense to take notice of the race of the people.

Everyone looks the same to me at the place I eat.
Kimchi fried rice, seafood pancakes, chicken pieces with whatever sauce they use and bim bim bap. Not too adventurous but god damn dericious and filling.

I really miss the great restaurants in Chicago. Some great Korean places there around Lincoln Park. Had some kind of raw marinated beef and those sea food pancake things at a place around there. Was amazing. Their soup is awesome as well. Wish I could remember the name....

Myk is like a dumb version of Koneg.
That said, Korean food outside of Korea is good as long as there is a significant Korean population and access to imported ingredients. Toronto has Koreatown, and it looks, smells, and tastes like dirty downtown Seoul. The food is fantastic.
The best Korean food in the world is in South Jeolla province. Backyard-fresh, grandma's home-cooking quality.

I've only had it once, and that was in Portland Or. I ordered poorly because it had some sweet peanut sauce on it..and I don't like sweet food. I'm sure if someone more in the know would have ordered for me..it would have been more to my taste.

I told you earlier. L.A. has great Korean food. Oakland is pretty good. I expect NYC has great Korean food too.
edit: And yes smelly, soft tofu soup is in my top three foods period. It has to be made right though. Some of the lame Korean places here in the states don't use the little fish that make the broth so good. They use beef broth instead which is ok but not nearly as good.

It is pretty dank. Viet food is also really delicious, I went to a place in little Saigon that had some amazing Pho and oxtail. There's a really good korean bbq place in Tustin, CA. Have to get there like an hour before it opens though and they don't take reservations
I had spicy miso soup today from a japanese market up in Coasta Mesa... never such a thing existed where I lived in the South. It felt like we only had like 4 asian people that lived in that entire town
