if you make it through to the final questions, the judge will throw you out.
it IS BS though, i get called every 3 years.
i went one time and sat there from 7:30am to 4pm and not a single panel was called out of the room.
i've also been dismissed at 9:00am before too.
what sucks is it's $15 to park.

They issue a bench warrant for your arrest if they call you and you aren't there. You've just gotten lucky that you weren't actually called. Then you can spend a night in jail while you wait for your chance to use the old "I never got it in the mail" excuse.

Only time a jury summons came to us was three months after we'd moved out of the state. He just called them and said "Yeah, not gonna be there- it'd be an 18 hour drive, since, you know, we MOVED three months ago".

One of the worst aspects of our legal system is the jury system.
1) Most of the people you actually want manage to get out of it.
2) People are treated quite badly -- you are a cog, nothing more.
3) People are on edge because you could quite literally end up in jail if you do something wrong.
4) It disrupts the economy -- oops my only worker in a 2 person shop just got called for a 3 month trial.
5) It is servitude.
6) People under these circumstances are disinclined to actually do their best at it.
7) It tends to provide very random results due to
7a) Jury nullification
7b) People being fooled by a nice face
7c) People being fooled into a guilty verdict due to other cues
7d) People being fooled by authority (or the opposite -- rebelling against authority)
8) It strives for people who do NOT know the law
9) It strives for people who live in a bag (know nothing about local or national news even)
10) It is very prone to local variation -- your verdict in one county might be different than if you were arrested in a different demographic.

There are tons more reasons, but the upshot of it is, I would be much happier if we had paid jurists who actually had some training in the law and some natural ability for it.

Nope has nothing to do with it. My husband got his even though he'd never taken any steps towards "officialness" in the state of any kind. No new driver's license, he didn't register to vote, nada- and he still got one.

i have a permanent letter from my doctor but i've not used it yet. i have too much fun writing in the most ridiculous things into the reasons i won't show up thing on the back. i never hear back from them so i'm never required to actually go. i did go once because i forgot to mail the form back. but i was unemployed at the time so i just went up to the people at the counter and said i forgot to mail this back, i'm on unemployment. and they shooed me out the door. apparently the goverment can't abide by paying you for not working, then also paying you $10 a day for sitting in a room.

Judges are not stupid... I am sure that they get people trying to duck it all the time. I have actually heard stories of judges fining people/contempt of court/obstruction of justice charges for trying to make up lies.
It probably depends on the judge/your state laws though.
