Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

I want to make some wrist warmers for next winter. One of my besties (and she's my yarn-buddy!) has kindly gifted me some stunning merino wool, which would be perfect as its nice and soft and silky, so its not going to be super itchy. Well every pattern we looked at for crochet was just kind of "meh", so she offered to teach me how to knit so i can make these: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elbow-length-fingerless-gloves HOWEVER. Oh my god, knitting is difficult. Or maybe im just not cut out for it or something, for starters it feels weird to work without a hook, the yarn keeps slipping off the end of the knitting needle; the stitches feel really awkward and in general it just feels funky to me. Those of you that knit, did any of you start with crochet first and then go to knitting? If so, did you have problems with the transition?

About 25 years ago, I met this woman at work who knitted every night, all night, as she answered the phones and did her part to keep our company profitable. I unloaded the trucks and envied her position and wished I had a job where I could sit on my ass and talk, and knit, and get paid for it. Anyway, I knew how to crochet, I had learned from my mom. I made an afghan and some pot holders. I figured I could nail this "talk on the phone" chick if I showed her my leet crocheting skill. So I made her a hat. It was the coolest hat ever, sorta round and fluffy, kinda like a fez but more awesome and stuff. She took one look at it and told me.....You need to learn how to knit. I, or course, agreed, and spent the next couple of monthhs taking lessons from her. I never could figure out how to make a hat while knitting, she quit to work at some other job and left me both still wanting to nail her (never did) and wishing I could knit (still cant). Damnit.

She would probably have been knitting you a ball warmer while you were pounding her. She was that good.

I've been knitting since I was 8, it's not that hard. Check out youtube, there are a lot of different methods for how you hold the yarn and whatnot, I've heard some crochet people say that "picking" or "continental" is easier for them, more like crocheting I guess. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuRLFl36tDY knitting in the round is something I didn't tackle until I'd been knitting for years, which is how you would make finger less mitts. Start out making dish clothes with cotton yarn, or something similar where you have a finished project in a few hours. It helps tremendously in not getting frustrated with your projects in the beginning. Start with the "knit" stitch, then try the "perl" stitch, from there you might want to learn increases both by knitting a stitch twice, and "yarn overs". Decreases are easy but sometimes they want you to slip the two stitches and then move them back and then knit them... it makes the decrease lean a different direction, but this is more for when you're doing patterned work. its easiest to work with circular knitting needles, even if you're knitting flat, the straight ones are often too long and get caught up on stuff, or you lose one. youtube is a priceless tool in learning new stitches, its tons easier than trying to learn from pictures in a book. learn the "long tail cast on" first, it's the easiest one to get started out knitting with.

I have crocheted since I was a kid and learned to knit in the past few years. Just knit a lot and you'll get used to it. Save gloves till you have knitted for awhile. They are too hard for a beginner. Silver

also, acrylic needles or wood needles increase the friction (making it easier to keep stitches on the needles), as does the type of yarn you use, which is why I suggested cotton yarn. I started my daughter with a ball of Sugars and Cream yarn and had her cast on about 15 stitches, then knit them until she finished the ball. She made at least 6 scarves like this before she got too bored and wanted to learn more stitches. The important part of this is that she learned tension in the process. It's easiest to figure out tension when you're not trying to follow some pattern and learn new stitches. If you want to make dish clothes, cast on about 25 stitches, and work in rows until it measures a square, which likely will not be 25 rows and cast off, if you want to make a loop at the end to hang it up, you can do it like crocheting. I actually use these dish clothes all the time too, they're really good for cookware that you don't want to scratch and glass cooktops.

I learned to crochet when I was a kid. It was fine, but I never could get the edges to come out un-crooked, even though I counted stitches and all that jazz. I learned to knit when I was 18 and found it MUCH easier than crocheting. Granted, I didn't get beyond beginner level in either craft, but yeah.

General-use advice: try it with another non-expensive good wool first, practice. Then use the good stuff once you know you won't completely F it up. I remember as a kid my grandma was awesome like that, she'd clickety-clack those knitting needles at super speed all the time, she made us sweaters and lovely little dresses. Too bad I grew out of liking the dresses when I was about 6...

As mentioned, use Youtube. I am sure there is a video showing every possible technique. I have been using it to help me get a better grasp on fly tying. It is a big help.
