I want one, but I don't want to spend $3000 on a Tempurpedic. There's other brands of memory foam mattresses out there and some can be had for as low as $300. Are these worth buying or do you get what you pay for?

I've not tested any of the other brands of mattresses, but I have tested memory foam pillows, and yeah, you get what you pay for.

I just know about Tempurpedics. They're really hot when you sleep on them; your body heat doesn't dissipate properly like with other mattresses. I imagine other memory foam mattresses would have the same problem, though Tempurpedic just released a special mattress with some sort of gel in the foam that dissipates body heat properly. I also know from a coworker who recently bought one that the mattress is considered 'proprietary', and if you use a different boxspring other than a tempurpedic one it voids the warranty on the mattress What's next, your mattress won't work unless it has an internet connection?

Well, I'm not buying a Tempurpedic because its way out of my price range. Their cheapest beds still cost over $1,000. That's craziness. See this one? http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Swiss-Lux-8-inch-Full-size-European-style-Memory-Foam-Mattress/5183949/product.html That's more my price range

Right, but I'd guess that the heat problem would still plague you. If you're one of those weird persons who is always cold and can actually sleep at night when it's 90 out, then I assume you'll be fine. If you're a normal human being, though, it's gonna suck.

I have a memory foam mattress topper. It's more of 2 inches of memory foam and 2 inches of regular foam. Love it. It's firm. On top of it I have a feather bed thing. My bed is like a giant cloud that me and my puppy float on.

Some memory foam mattresses have a gel memory foam blend that keeps you much cooler than the older just memory foam mattresses. I have a Simmons gel/foam mattress and I cannot say enough good things about it.

I got a mattress topper of mem foam, about 2-3 inches thick, goes above your regular mattress. Cost about $100 for Cal King size at Costco. It's fantabulous. Get one if you don't have lots of cash. Had mine now for about 5-6 years.

Yeah but my spring mattress is so lumpy and out of whack that I don't think a topper will help me, I need to replace the whole mattress

We have a sprung mattress with a 2 inch memory foam layer built in on top, it was the best compromise we could find cost/comfort.

Yes. Bought one in June or July of 2010 - a knockoff from Overstock.com. Here's a lengthy review I wrote about the one we got, which we're still using and enjoying immensely. http://vnboards.ign.com/outpost/b22180/113447649/r113448723/

Love my Tempurpedic and have had it forever, like 5-10 years or so. The heat thing is an issue but a topper clears that right up and adds a little fluff between you and the foam. Probably not as big an issue with a newer mattress but, like I said, I have had mine forever.

We've had our tempurpedic for about 5 years now. It's not bad, and we have a cover for it that makes it a one-way heat sink, so we don't get hot at all, but I don't think I'd buy another one. We haven't noticed any improvement in our sleep (in fact it's slightly worse) and it just...isn't quite as comfortable for us as a normal mattress. Not sure how else to explain it.

I did not like them. The spongy feeling was not ideal imo. I instead got one with a large pillow top, but was still about as pricy as the range you are talking, but love that damn bed! Go to a mattress store and lay on them and try them out. At one I went to the lady even said they would allow you to take a short 30ish minute nap to make your decision since a $4500 bed is a very large investment. *Whatever you get, make sure to compliment it with some nice 1200-1500 thread count sheets. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY. Check prices for them on ebay, overstock, and amazon. You can get them there for very cheap.

I'm the opposite. I can't see sleeping on a normal mattress since getting mine. It is losing shape though so I am thinking of replacing it. Considering how long I have had it and how well I have slept on it I consider it worth it.

i wouldn't give up my tempurpedic for anything, my back is much better thanks to it and i sleep much better. the heat can be an issue if you live someplace warm (i'm in florida) but i found that simply doubling up the bottom sheet is enough to solve that problem. i wouldn't trust any other memory foam, i've seen way too many other brands of so called memory foam that hold up for maybe a year or two (or less) and then lose all their resistance and support. my bed on the other hand is still working just great and its been about 7 years i'd guess.

I'll have to check on that, will repost tonight when I find that out. GrimTempest posted: i wouldn't give up my tempurpedic for anything, my back is much better thanks to it and i sleep much better. the heat can be an issue if you live someplace warm (i'm in florida) but i found that simply doubling up the bottom sheet is enough to solve that problem. i wouldn't trust any other memory foam, i've seen way too many other brands of so called memory foam that hold up for maybe a year or two (or less) and then lose all their resistance and support. my bed on the other hand is still working just great and its been about 7 years i'd guess.
See, here's the thing about the whole "durability" issue between knockoffs and Tempurpedic. The bed we bought was $500. A comparable Tempurpedic was damn near $5k. Even if my current bed lasts only 3 or 4 years, I highly doubt that a Tempurpedic is going to last 30 or 40 years. More likely is that if there is any durability differences, they are on the order of 10 or 20%, not 1000% like the price is.

tempurpedic is guaranteed for 20 years i think. i think i paid 1800 for mine and its a nice queen size. if your paying 3 or 4k for one your either shopping at the wrong stores or going for ridiculously overdone models...sort of like buying a Lamborghini rather than something more reasonable.
