http://www.businessinsider.com/tennessee-republican-bill-to-ban-teaching-gay-people-exist-2012-2 Woods writes that House education subcommittee chair Joey Hensley had earlier admonished all Tennessee parents not to let their children watch “Modern Family†on television because they might discover there are homosexuals in the world, even if teachers can't say the word gay in schools.

It's a stupid thing to legislate, but technically they're saying not to teach the kids about gays until 9th grade. In and of itself this doesn't really bother me, but what happens if you have an openly gay teacher? Are they now forbidden from talking about themselves unless their students are in high school?

Forget the teachers, I don't really care if they can talk about their sexuality with their classes or not, because it's not pertinent imo. It's the few young gay students that will be in that atmosphere that I worry about. It's confusing and rough enough for most without being completely stifled.

Yes, if a teacher has flowers on their desk on Valentine's Day, they shouldn't be allowed to answer if a student asks them who sent it to them. And a teacher's SO should never be allowed to pick up or drop off the teacher on school property. Or any other such situation where a student could possibly pick up on the teacher's sexuality.

Yeah, I'm sure you register the same level of alarm when your students learn which of their teachers are married and which ones aren't. I'm not saying gay teachers should be telling their students about which of the gym teachers have the nicest balls, but an openly gay person isn't exactly hard to pick out, either. Azure brings up a good point, too. You don't exactly make kids stop being gay by not talking to them about it until they're 13.

Rolling Stone had a long article about a school district in Minnesota that had similar restriction on discussions of being gay... "There has been widespread confusion," says Anoka-Hennepin teachers' union president Julie Blaha. "You ask five people how to interpret the policy and you get five different answers." Silenced by fear, gay teachers became more vigilant than ever to avoid mention of their personal lives, and in closeting themselves, they inadvertently ensured that many students had no real-life gay role models. "I was told by teachers, 'You have to be careful, it's really not safe for you to come out,'" says the psychologist Cashen, who is a lesbian. "I felt like I couldn't have a picture of my family on my desk." When teacher Jefferson Fietek was outed in the community paper, which referred to him as an "open homosexual," he didn't feel he could address the situation with his students even as they passed the newspaper around, tittering. When one finally asked, "Are you gay?" he panicked. "I was terrified to answer that question," Fietek says. "I thought, 'If I violate the policy, what's going to happen to me?'" The silence of adults was deafening. At Blaine High School, says alum Justin Anderson, "I would hear people calling people 'fags' all the time without it being addressed. Teachers just didn't respond." In Andover High School, when 10th-grader Sam Pinilla was pushed to the ground by three kids calling him a "faggot," he saw a teacher nearby who did nothing to stop the assault. At Anoka High School, a 10th-grade girl became so upset at being mocked as a "lesbo" and a "sinner" – in earshot of teachers – that she complained to an associate principal, who counseled her to "lay low"; the girl would later attempt suicide. At Anoka Middle School for the Arts, after Kyle Rooker was urinated upon from above in a boys' bathroom stall, an associate principal told him, "It was probably water." Jackson Middle School seventh-grader Dylon Frei was passed notes saying, "Get out of this town, fag"; when a teacher intercepted one such note, she simply threw it away. "You feel horrible about yourself," remembers Dylon. "Like, why do these kids hate me so much? And why won't anybody help me?" The following year, after Dylon was hit in the head with a binder and called "fag," the associate principal told Dylon that since there was no proof of the incident she could take no action. By contrast, Dylon and others saw how the same teachers who ignored anti-gay insults were quick to reprimand kids who uttered racial slurs. It further reinforced the message resonating throughout the district: Gay kids simply didn't deserve protection. Doubling down on the stupid? It's pretty easy to see that he's trying to clue you in that it goes beyond talking and can be inferred in many different ways. Where does it stop? It isn't like kids are walking into school on the first day and getting "Hi class, i'm Mr. Lubelobber and i'll be your 1st grade teacher. By the way, i'm really really gay and if you don't know what that means, just ask and i'll be happy to explain!" BTW - saying "My significant other" only works if heteros say it too. Are you prepared to say it too when in front of any children? After all, it's the right thing to do, even if you're not a teacher, right?

Sure... what's so wrong about saying significant other to children? Or heck... do like I do at work, "That's not an appropriate conversation for work"... or what I say at work "None of your business" in a joking way. I keep personal and business separated, really not that complex. Edit: All work places you go do have training videos now about how not to talk about sex at work. Teachers should be no different.

Incidentally both my 4 year old and my 6 year old have brought up this issue recently. The conversation basically goes...
Kid: Boys only marry Girls.
Parent: No some boys marry boys and some girls marry girls
Kid: No
Parent Yes, you know Mike, he is married to Bob.
Kid: Ohh, OK. < continues on with their life >
The fear over the gay issue basically comes down to people pretending something doesn't exist for so long they don't know what else to do. Coming out as gay should be no different then coming out as straight.

Groucho's article pretty clearly spells out why this is awful for young gay students. Not sure why the focus is on teachers, who will for the most part be fine regardless, gay or straight. Except that that's probably a simpler angle to take in order to disregard the topic as negligible, ie. Lyken.

Yeah the idea that a kid wouldn't already know about homosexuality in middle school is hilarious but that is what this law seems to be "sheltering" these kids from. I don't see why the state would make a law trying to stop kids from learning about the existance of gay people.

Parents wanting to control what their kids hear is as old as time. Many of the parents have probably never talked with their kids about the existance of gay people and they'd rather they never know. Because if you're a stupid anti-gay bigot chances are very high you also believe that people knowing about gay people will increase their chances to be gay.

It's not so much focusing on the teacher angle as it is focusing on Lyken's stupid defense of the teacher angle. I agree that it's worse for the students, but one of the worst parts for the students is because a teacher can't be openly gay, so it's sort of a circular argument.

No they are specifically limiting words they can use. It is still the parents job to teach the kids about this stuff whether they can say the word gay or not.

God DAMN these liberal schools and their crusade to gayafy their students. It's every American small town's right to maintain a respectable standard of bigotry. First you assholes took away our ability to pick on blacks, next we weren't allowed to mock the Jew people. Now you want to take away our right to condemn the homogays. Look, these liberal teachers come in from these elitist urban schools and think they can dictate to us basic "human dignity." But they're just manufacturing problems. We didn't have no gays before the liberals came. I mean, we still don't. There are no gays in America. THERE ARE NO GAYS IN AMERICA!

No they are specifically limiting words they can use. It is still the parents job to teach the kids about this stuff whether they can say the word gay or not.
Then that would be my only issue with this bill, I don't think it goes far enough. They should just say, unless you are a sex ed teacher, don't talk about sex in your class room.

Wait. We aren't allowed to mock the Jew people? This thread is educational.

Lyken-P stop. The bill says nothing about teaching sex in school. They are saying they can't even say that homosexuals exist. It's akin to saying there are no such thing as left handed people. Do you know who else says there are no such thing as gay people?

They aren't talking about sex, but carry on with your soapbox. I am glad your side is on the losing end of this and I'll end it at that. TN and apparently others here are on the same level as ahmadinejad. Congrats.

Sexuality and sex are two separate topics btw, but I'm quite sure you wouldn't see the distinction in this case (Lyken).

I know it's difficult, but try reading the rest of the thread. Azure summed it up two posts above you. Sexuality is not the same thing as sex. People express their sexuality in a million different ways every day and nobody gives it a second thought until their sexuality is incongruous with gender stereotypes. Then suddenly people puff up and complain loudly about how gays should just keep it in private.

Lyken penis and swirls have already explained to us that just mentioning your spouse in any form is tantamount to describing how you ended up preforming a dirty sanchez on said spouse while you were dressed in your latex Nazi officer uniform.. Not that I have a latex Nazi uniform anywhere in my apartment, that would be weird.

The guy who keeps reintroducing this bill (every session for the past 8 years) is the same guy who got thrown out of that cafe in Knoxville a while back. Complete and utter facktard. If this bill becomes law, you wouldn't even be able to mention that gay people exist, even in casual conversation. Which is insane. A law that requires everyone to ignore reality and never mention it because some people don't like it. Go go party of smaller government! Next you can outlaw mentioning homeless people. Can't mention they exist because it might make some kid want to be one! Plus, if you just act like they don't exist, you don't have to worry about ever dealing with one. Thank god someone is looking out for our kids well being. Thank you freedom loving "conservatives"!!1!!!

Sure... what's so wrong about saying significant other to children? Or heck... do like I do at work, "That's not an appropriate conversation for work"... or what I say at work "None of your business" in a joking way. I keep personal and business separated, really not that complex. Edit: All work places you go do have training videos now about how not to talk about sex at work. Teachers should be no different.
FYI - those training videos don't tell you to say 'significant other'. Wife or husband is totally appropriate and isn't all that personal. BTW- The way you hedge your conversation at work, i bet they think you're gay, so it's kinda self defeating. And i don't believe for a second that you'd keep your *ahem* 'significant other' completely secret at work. No one does that, except gay people.... wait.....

whats the difference between openly hetero and openly gay? is there such a thing as closet hetero? when i grew up, the teachers taught. they didnt tell us about their boyfriends or girlfriends. we learned math and science or english. at no point in any of my classes was teachers same sex (or opposite sex) relationship a part of the curriculum. i had teachers that i thought were inhuman dopplegangers or robots. i dont understand how you can express being gay while you are busy teaching, or being hetero for that matter. unless by openly gay you mean fabulous and proud with a serious lisp and a 2ft cushion of air between his loafers and the floor, but thats kind of stereotypical, dont you think?

I think he means you both share a unwavering irrational hatred of people who are different then you. Immadinnajacket probably also beat the crap put of his children to "discipline" them and not at all because he was a inept parent and a coward.

I don't hate anyone here, least of all you.. Weaklings don't deserve that kind of attention and energy from me. Like all Christians when put upon you feel prosecuted and your butt starts to overflow with hurt and you feel the need to victimize yourself, it's nothing new. I do however love degrading and insulting stupid people, and you carry around enough stupid to fill my quota for weeks.

You trying to justify your hatred of others by me hating you is laughable, so much of the banter that goes on here could more then be considered hateful, this is just another futile defensive argument from a weakling. I'm simply calling you out on your hatred of gay people which is more then evident in your previous posts. You don't deserve my hatred, hatred is reserved for people who actually threatens or challenge me. Well I have already gotten you to blow a gasket once where you lashed out in petty impotent rage like a 10 year old; it was fun to watch, so you sitting here and saying that you don't care is a lie.. Isn't that a sin among you lessers? You're just the same as immadinnajacket and the rest of the unwashed Jihadist scum, only difference is they have the balls to actually die for their conviction, the closest you get is striking a defenseless child in petulant anger.. pathetic.

Groucho48 posted: Rolling Stone had a long article about a school district in Minnesota that had similar restriction on discussions of being gay...
"I thought, 'If I violate the policy, what's going to happen to me?'"
The silence of adults was deafening.
