A Bellaire man didn’t wait for police to arrive to nab a robbery suspect in his neighborhood Monday. Rick Melartin apprehended the suspect himself – with the help of his .50-caliber handgun
Melartin’s neighbor had just been robbed at gunpoint as he was getting into his car (in the 5300 block of Holly Street). The robber got distracted and the victim grabbed his gun and screamed.
Melartin called 911 and came outside with his pistol. The robber took off without his gun and headed for an 89-year-old neighbor’s backyard.
Melartin told the suspect to stop or he would shoot, KPRC reports. Then he fired his pistol into the ground and held the robber until police arrived.

I agree with this! You have to be aware of where that bullet will go after impact because you are legally liable for anything it hits afterwards too. For the same reason, that is a stupid home protection gun as well. I had to rethink using slugs in my 20 gauge because of this too and move back to buck shot.
Luckily, he just fired it into the ground. Has the shooter been charged with anything yet? Reading article now. *And article says nothing. People need to be careful in a situation like this, it sounds as if the danger was gone, the suspect was gunless and running away if you shot him you now become a criminal too.

I was just curious if negligent discharge of a weapon or something minor, but I assume not. However, had he actually shot the guy running away without a guy, you would be very wrong. There is no guarantee but he would certainly be eligible for criminal and civil charges.

A friend of mine had 2 Desert Eagle .44 Mags. It was all I could do to shoot one of those with one hand. It seriously tried to take my ear off every time. Not only that, but it does a serious twist in your hand. Impossible with one hand to squeeze 2 rounds off rapid fire.

never shot one but handled enough of them at gun shows and gun shops to know the gun is just to big for my hands.
my fingers wont even completely wrap around the grip.
1911 .45 is about the largest framed gun that I feel safe handling and shooting with one hand.

LOL @ the reporter in the story for highlighting the caliber of the pistol...
50 cal is really not practical for civilian use really in any capacity.
Every gun n00b goes through the "bigger is better" phase of gun ownership whether it's the 454 casull, the 44 mag, the 50 AE, the 0.50 S&W, the 50 BMG, it doesn't matter. I went through that stage as well when I was first getting into guns, in fact I went through it TWICE.
I wanted a LAR Grizzly 50 AE semi auto pistol in the worst way... then I shot a few 1911s and glock 45s and a few 44 mag revolvers and realized that a 50 was just a dumb idea for a handgun...
Later when I really got into rifle shooting, I was bound and determined to get a 50 BMG rifle - one of the big Armalites or Barrets - for thousand yard shooting - never mind the fact that the nearest thousand yard range was a 4 hour drive from me at the time. In fact, I was ->||<- close to buying a Barret one day and instead of dropping the $5k on the whole package I told the gun store owner that I wanted to sleep on it. Thank God I slept on it and thought better of the whole thing in the morning, instead of dropping the $5k for a rifle that would be largely a novelty item. I bought a sweet gently used shotgun instead the next day for about 1/10th the price lol! Hell, the reloading dies for 50 BMG are stupidly expensive, upwards of $600 new... wtf?!
Anyway, yeah, good on this guy for stopping the perp and shooting into the ground. The choice of weapon was made for the man by the robber (gun n00b) after all, and it serves him (the robber) right.

1) He was running away, the threat was gone. You are then the the assailant if you shoot him.
2) Had he not run and/or attacked... there is no safe display or use of that gun in a neighborhood, he would have done more damage than good. The guy was an idiot for bringing that out<.>
