I've been a full-time student and working part-time, so, I didn't make much in 2011. I've tried 2 different tax websites and both say the same thing: I get a full refund of fed and state tax that I paid. So, I pay nothing in taxes this year? Its a nice gesture to get $2K back, but its never happened before and I'm still dumbfounded. I always claim 0 on my W-4's in case the IRS tries raping me for cash - obviously not a guarantee, but its better than getting whammy'ed with a $2-$4K bill from the IRS. Can someone please talk some clarity before I hit the 'File' button? Just doesn't make sense to pay $0 in taxes.

That actually sounds right to me. For the first several years of our marriage, while my husband was enlisted in the Army, we always got everything back we had paid in taxes. Our state didn't do state taxes so it was just federal, but yeah it can and does happen. More often than you might think.

I forget what the number is, but if you make under a certain amount yearly, you don't have to pay taxes.

Past 2 years I was working full-time (and full-time school), so, I guess so! Couldn't handle both and cut back on work. And I think my 401K f***ed me over one year. Just very, very strange to me Edit: I just figured EVERYONE paid some percentage of tax unless you didn't earn income or w/e

Nope we use a progressive tax system. I did taxes last year and the number of people that pay nothing in and yet receives thousands back from EIC and other child tax credits etc.. is just mind boggling.

Standard deduction is 5800. It's up from last year, not sure what it was then. If your income was only 6000, it kinda makes sense you don't owe anything. You may want to double check previous years and make sure the feds don't owe you money.

or use Turbo Tax and pay $20 and it's basically same program that H&R uses.

everyone gets their first 5600 untaxed. then like a 3600 deduction (or loophole depending on how you see it) for yourself and any dependents. edit: this is why all the people arguing that poor people should be taxed are in essence just wanting to tax themselves even more.

Don't forget to claim the American Opportunity Credit for anything you paid in tuition, books, and any required supplies for school. Also, you might qualify for the Earned Income Credit since you made very little, the last time I checked it was anything under $10k qualified for single people without dependents. you could easily end up with more than what you paid in.
