Ah, thanks. It didn't dawn on me to check their forums because I don't visit them ever since I got banned from them.

A failed UPS means a single power feed has failed. You should have more than one independent power feed, thus more than one UPS, et cetera.
2N is pretty standard for a tier 3 data center. ( Cheap plug for my awesome company: http://redit.com )

On the contrary, you can in fact setup generators to automatically start up when main power is lost. Someone at Steam screwed up royally.
