since you said you were curious, i don't feel like I'm being mean to you to say this: that is totally stupid. Obsession is pretty clearly defined as unhealthy in nature. If you really, honestly love a girl that dumped you, you would let her go, for example. Not obsess over her.

I actually believe that if you are obsessed with someone, you dont love them. Not truly, not properly. Maybe you did once, but it's grown and twisted into something ugly.

that is easy, just think of the obsessions going on on acf, and esp ones that always must have the last word, even when it isnt in the same thread. that is an obsession. love is nothing like that.

depends on your definition of love, but i still imagine an enormous overlap. some guy rock climbs 8 hours a day, does he love rock climbing or is he obsessed with it? does it make a difference if rock climbing loves him back? maybe in the long run, since if rock climbing doesn't love him back it will never appreciate him.

It's kind of a vague question, just because yeah everything is dependent on circumstance, of course. You could argue for the truth of it, but I find nothing useful about the question. You could also ask "Is the only difference between washing your hands more than once in a row and OCD...circumstance?" Well yeah, but what defines circumstance? Is circumstance really the only difference? etc. So arguably true but not useful would be my take on it.

obsessing over a person makes them into an object. something you have to have... not someone you want to be with

I thought the idea of 'love and obsession' only being separated by a thin line to be silly on first thought. Then I wondered HOW does something that was once pleasant and enjoyable cross the line into obsession...where your life is ruled by certain thoughts of something, someone or someplace? Aren't many inventors obsessed? Truly... ~Murron~

if everything reminded you of apples, you might love apples. if you couldn't control your attention to the point where you repeatedly find yourself thinking about apples even when you no longer want to think about apples...

Exactly. I know a girl who broke up with her (then) boyfriend of 3 years, back in 2002. He hacked her email, stalked her, causing her to have to move house like 3 times because he found out where she lived and told all her friends/ anyone who would listen that he was going to make her be with him. Last year, 2011 (so, 9 YEARS after they broke up), he turned up standing across the street from her house, just staring at her. She moved house again a week after that happened. She says she always feels like she's on the run from him, like she'll never be safe. She's genuinely afraid that if he ever catches her unawares, she's going to end up in some basement somewhere..

He was actually very sweet, if a bit *much* at times. He just came off as insecure, it was only at the end of the relationship that she found out that he regularly went through her computer/ emails/ etc, at that point she clued into what was going on and left him. To her defence she was 22 and very naive.

I didn't know my ex would be a crazy stalker until after we broke up either. Since they don't stalk you at normal times in the relationship, it's not like they will just come out and be like oh by the way I also stalk people so just be aware of that if we ever break up.

I can more understand an obsession with an idea, but per you subject was only comparing it to love....as for obsessed with someone.

Love = mutual friendship + passion + commitment. Obsession often masquerades as the same feeling, but is comprised entirely of passion (often unilateral passion by one person for another, unrequited) and circular thoughts that tend to defy reason.
