Is moving forward. Article posted: The construction of two new nuclear reactors won federal approval today, making them the first to be built in the U.S. in the decades since the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in 1979. The U.S. Nuclear and Regulatory Commission gave the go-ahead to Southern Company of Atlanta to add two reactors to its existing pair at the Vogtle Plant in Waynesboro, Ga. clicky
Was one of the reasons McCain got my vote. We desperately need energy upgrades across the country. The Dem White house looks pretty efficient implementing RWN policy. So much for all that green energy talk. Sorry hippies

Nuclear is the best solution available for energy consumption that does not increase carbon emissions and has a smaller environmental footprint than wind and hydro.

I mostly agree, though i think you'd have to define "environmental footprint" very narrowly. All that spent fuel shit has to be stored somewhere for eleventy gozillion years.

I don't actually know how much volume spent nuclear fuel takes up? Sticking it in a cave somewhere seems to be the solution, which is "a smaller environmental footprint" than acres of wind farms.

I dont have a real problem with nuclear energy. Economically its just not a good investment without massive gov't subsidies.....and private companies arent lining up to build them. Some people object to government throwing money at wind/solar while clamoring for more money to be thrown at nuclear.
Throw money at both. Energy is really important.

While it is a contentious debate on what the definition of green is and if nuclear energy falls into that category, I definitely agree that we need more of this now. Its tragic that we stalled on reactors for 3+ decades. Definitely played to the Bush big oil friends. Glad to see its moving forward.

It is about as green as it gets except for wind/solar, which are not able to produce electricity at nearly the same consistency and output. And considering that it would be replacing coal plants, which are among the dirtiest, switching to nuclear is a no-brainer. We produce about 20% of our electricity with nuclear. France does ~80%. States that get a large % of power from nuclear tend to be strong top-down central government states like france and japan. The problem with nuclear power is the costs are localized rather than dispersed so there is a bigger NIMBY element. Nuclear power is way, way safer than coal in terms of overall economic damage, but coal plants don't arouse the same reactions because the pollution is diffuse over both time and space.

We could use Gen IV molten salt reactors for a lower cost and the usage of thorium which is 100x more abundant and when used inside a molten salt reactor is 99% used in the process while only having a half life of about a hundred years. I like that they're building plants but it sucks that they're using old and busted technology to do so.

I have tried dipping into the morass of pro/anti nuclear power arguments. I don't get very far. Both the pros and the antis have arguments that sound good and most of the arguments really on complex and esoteric knowledge that I don't possess. A lot of the arguments come down to how to figure the actual costs of nuclear. The pros say it is pretty cheap, the antis say it is quite expensive. Philosophically, I am more pro than anti but I do have the sense that both sides are very dishonest in their arguments.

I believe Obama was initially completely against nuclear power options, but grudgingly moved his position as it became more apparent that people were generally in favor of it in the theoretical sense (still nimby) and McCain was for it. McCain's interest in moving nuclear power forward was one of his better positions from my pov. I agree also that it will be sad if any new plans end up using outdated tech.
