The drama is certainly manufactured. Most of those units go for almost nothing and are full of old clothes, pictures of dead people no one ever heard of, and christmas decorations where half the lights don't work.

better than the guy on there who through his NES was worth $15k
I think the majority of the show is real. There are some terribly fake versions out there. Storage Hunters is the worst of em all.

Yes and no. They do bid and win lockers against average joes. Then the producers put rare merchandise in them to be discovered. They've traced the purchase of several 'found' items back to the show/producers before the storage lockers were auctioned.

I've heard that Storage Hunters was on TV before Storage Wars AND the people on Storage Wars were once featured on Storage Hunters (early episodes). Further making me believe that its all fake. Did anyone watch that Storage Wars episode where Linda, I think her name is, takes over the auctioning when he husband falls ill? Isn't it a little strange that things don't go 'her way' with the units? Most of units were almost bare empty.

This ^! I had a hunch that something like this was going on because wasn't it strange that they found 1 or 2 awesome, rare items in a s***ty-junk unit?

I don't like that show, the people are all hillbilly retards. Especially that annoying blonde girl and her husband. I prefer American Pickers or that new Cajun Pawn Stars one, although the manufactured dialogue is annoying in those at times too.

I've watched a few episodes of American Pickers and they held my interest, but I don't care if I ever see another one. I watched two episodes of some pawn shop show. It was pretty boring, but better than the weather channel. Mostly.

Just with regard to the treasure hunter type shows, I mean. None of them are particularly thrilling television, just something to pass the time. At least those people are interested generally in antiques and rare things. The storage people just seem to overpay for things and then have pissing matches about who runs the best thrift shop. Half the show is them talking crap about each other and saying obvious things like "I really would like to get good stuff in the locker I buy".

I actually sorta like that one (American Restoration) I've seen two of three episodes, and thought it was pretty damn interesting. The guy running the place is a drama whore however. I still like Antiques Roadshow better than any of them however.

The best auctions ever were the post office auctions my dad used to go to back in the 70s, back when companies used to mail out free samples of shiz. He bought refrigerator boxes full of of that crap for cheap. I think he finally ran out of toothpaste from the auctions sometime in the early 1990s.

After Eastern Airlines went out of business, I went to an auction for the tons of crap they had in their warehouses. I bought 3 cases of "various individually packaged consumables" for 5 bucks each. Figured it was airline peanuts or something similar. I got 3 cases, each containing 5 gross (720) airplane bottles of booze. Hell yeah. Did have to rent a truck to get them home though.

Barry is the only one that doesn't have a junk store to sell all his treasures. All the other bidders have shops. They picked him for the show because he's weird. And yes, he's very wealthy and having a blast. My daughter said he's much crazier off camera.

I work in the moving/storage biz and we have storage auctions every few years. We do everything we can to avoid an auction, typically the outstanding storage charges far exceed anything you'll get from an auction. The storage contents usually are worthless household goods and crappy furniture with the occasional antique and collectible thrown in for good measure.
I usually have no use or interest in other peoples junk, but I did buy one storage lot a few years back from a local self storage facility. I bought this unit because I had a bit of inside knowledge about the stuff because we had moved the person into storage. In this case the items belonged to an elderly woman from an upscale home who was moving to a nursing home. Her son who was moving her wrote us a few bad checks and obviously did the same to the storage company. When I spoke to him he said he didn't care about her "junk" and good luck getting any money from him. I bought the locker for $375 including auction fees. Items I got and sold from the unit:
Haviland/Limoges set of china complete with every serving piece known to man, sold to dealer for $1,400.
30-40 misc Royal Doultons, including a few rare ones, sold for $850 to dealer.
30-40 "Occupied Japan" figurines, sold for $350.
1 Swiss clock from around 1850, sold for $650.
Other misc sold for an additional $500.
The thing that got me were all the priceless items in the storage lot, 70 years of family photos and correspondance, letters from her father who was in both WWI and WW2. There were irreplaceble family archives that her idiot son labeled as junk. I saved these items and a few pieces of what I took to be family heirloom jewelry and tried to contact her son many times to have him come get them, to this day he has not retrieved them.

As I said the last time when I posted about this... The people are real. They all, except for Barry, make or have made their living buying and selling storage lockers. They buy hundreds of them over the course of the month for anything from $1 to the several thousand$ that you see on TV. Then they nickel and dime everything out of there in their shops to break even or make money. Everything televised is fake. Cool stuff is planted in there to make the show look cool.

My mom watches this show, and American Pickers. I like the old guy that usually finds something cool and then has a story about it. The only "reality" show I've been watching is Gold Rush... damn show is addictive. Last week I was worried that Grandpa was gonna die of his heart attack.
