Hope that comes with some rockin add-ons. My gym membership was $75 down and $10 a month. The gym is a basic one with just a weight lifting and a cardio area though, nothing special.

we pay $465 for a family deal (just my Mom and me that go, but it's cheaper to do that than separate)...but the place we go to has an olympic size indoor pool, 2 full basketball courts (1 that is setup for volleyball), a track on the 2nd floor...also has 2 racquetball courts, huge weight room and a cardio room. plus they offer a lot of classes and stuff for a little extra.
seems steep for the little bit you described. although I also live in west Tennessee, so everything is a little cheaper here :P

Ok, that's the 199 fee then; they want to make sure they get more or less a years worth of money from you. The hours are a big deal IMO because a TON of the things that attract you to it might be full depending on the hours you go. Personally, I'd tell them I'm not paying any sign up fee and if they can hit me with the 20 bucks a month, they've got a client. Call Vision Quest or some other smaller place and use their monthly fee against them. Tell them you only care about cardio and weight equipment (which each gym has) so they don't try to sell you the "well we have 14 racquetball courts" stuff.

$199 down seems a bit steep. I can't recall exactly what I paid when I first signed up for the gym. I was about 17 (so almost 10 years ago), paid for a 2 year contract up front (which would have been $300-$400 or so). Once the 2 years went by, it went to $96 a year or something like that. That's what I pay now. I have access to everything 24/7 except the racquetball court.

How willing have they seemed to negotiate with you? I was one of the Bally's members clubs they closed and bought my membership, but their club is about 3x farther away, and even though they 'honored' my original plan ($26/mo), they stripped it of its towel service that used to be free and my right to bring quests twice a month. I know at Ballys you could bluff them with cancellation and usually get a discount, wondering if that is the same at LA Fitness.

i've moved a lot and have been a member of several different gyms...
fitworks/golds/urban active...
all decent gyms.....all over priced...all required an annual contract
my current gym is simply the local YMCA which has a gym that rivals any of the places above....while not all Ys have such a good workout facility this one does and it is just $30 a month with no contract
that's for several pools...any amenity that a large fitness center has(sauna/spa/trainers) and all the extra silly crap that comes with the Y...a daycare area...basketball courts...indoor track...anything u could want
the offer you have there is just slightly more than what i pay
and as long as you are ok with the contract i'd say go for it...it seems like a better deal than i've ever had from a fitness center...i simply hate the nazi attitude the places i've been have with the contract....
example (urban active)....
me: hey...i got a hernia working out in your club....not your fault...but obviously i can't use your facilities for several months after the surgery....any way you can work with me here?
them: nope
me: that's fine...just know after my contract expires i will never have anything to do with your business again
example 2(fitworks):
me: hey...my job requires me to move...gonna need to break that contract under the "moving clause"
them: you know if your new address is within 40 miles of one of our centers you can't break your contract?
me: yup
them: gonna need your new address...ok...<give it to them and watch them pull up a map measuring the distance>
them: it's only 10 miles outside the distance...you sure you don't want to just keep the membership?
me: no one wants to travel 50 miles to a gym every day...just cancel it
them: ok....we need proof you are living at this address...mail us some kind of proof....if we don't get the proof in 3 days we will charge you for next month...no refunds
me: not a problem....here is my lease
