At 04:46 GMT on Tuesday, an account belonging to Anonymous suggested that more than a gigabyte of source code from the company's PC Anywhere software had been uploaded to torrent website The Pirate Bay. Symantec would not confirm that this was the case.

"In January an individual claiming to be part of the 'Anonymous' group attempted to extort a payment from Symantec in exchange for not publicly posting stolen Symantec source code they claimed to have in their possession," the company said in a statement. "Symantec conducted an internal investigation into this incident and also contacted law enforcement, given the attempted extortion and apparent theft of intellectual property.

Most of you Outposters are computer nerds, what would the release of this code do, if anything, in regards the security of systems using the software?

Its only a matter of time before events catch up to Anonymous bullies.

Probably not much. PC Anywhere is built upon the same technology that has been in the public domain for 20 or more years now. It's unlikely they'll find a back door. I suppose it could be a boon for their competitors. In fact I would't be surprised if a thorough investigation turned up a mystery payment from Citrix.

So the potential threat is discovering bad code to exploit osemthing? That makes sense.

That and it can gives their competition an edge. I'm sure they're already looking at the code, and they'll probably pick up some of PC Anywhere's customers who lose faith in them after this.

Social engineering and targeted phishing attacks provide more ways in than finding some way in via poorly written software.
