I thankfully talked my daughter out of a husky, we looked at the "working dog intelligence scale" thingy, and as previously was mentioned several times, Golden Retriever is near the top of the list. Thinking it might take her a while to find a puppy, I suggested Chesapeake Bay Retriever mixes as a possible solution, since they're a lot sturdier than Goldens. Then today she found one, only by the grace of other people wanting them, we missed going to see them by an hour. So we're considering a Golden/Lab mix and a Golden/Unknown mix ATM.

We generally teach them not to piddle in the house first, along with "Come" and "sit".

best of luck. That is a good choice, they are very smart which is why many are service dogs. do you service adults with the piddle training? Only asking for a friend.

adults have to wear depends, and I don't change them. if you just need aim training, I'll put some cherrios in the bowl for you to sink. Edit: I also ordered the 4H dog training book, and have downloaded several other obedience training books. The services the dog will provide are things that have to be trained individually, and there are a lot of forums with information and videos on how best to accomplish each task.

I have taught my cocker spaniel how to play out a death scene... I put my palm out to her and tell her "Reach for the sky!", she sits and puts one of her front paws up. I point my "gun" fingers at her and say "Maggie, bang!" and she falls over and plays dead. she definitely responds more to the hand gestures though.

All I can hope for is another dog as good as Maggie at learning new things. She was trained when I got her, I've taught her a few things, she learned "play dead" originally in less than 5 minutes. Then I changed it up with the "bang" hand motion, and she picked that up without issue. She does get excited sometimes after a few commands and start doing random tricks for treats.

Glad you talked her out of a husky, it would have been a disaster. They are very willful and independent dogs. Intelligent but usually for the mischief side of things.

That was exactly how my Aussie Shepherd was, willfull till the day she died. Sometimes I'd call her to come inside, she'd look at me, acknowledge that she understood what she was supposed to do, and then run off, or simply ignore me. as if she was saying, "Come inside? are you insane? I have things to do out here.... I'll come in when I'm ready!"

shelties are not yappy. they're not typical "small" dogs at all. and i would laugh until i died from laughing if your retard daughter, who can't do things on her own and needs a service dog decided to get a husky. that's quite possibly the dumbest thing i've ever heard in my life.

It's like people really... Some breeds are more prone to be barky. You just need to train the pup when its appropriate to bark. Shelties aren't a small breed but more of a medium sized animal. Certainly no Chessy or Golden. If you are set on a large breed pup then so be it, but until I got my first sheltie I wanted a large breed too Everybody wants a Golden to the point that good breeders have waiting lines of people hoping to get any dog at all. I stand behind what I said though. Shelties are smart and biddable as a breed but of the 4 that Ive owned go, only one of them had the temperment for service dog work. If u don't get a pup with the right temperment then you are wasting your time. Gotta see the pups parents to know what the litters potential is.

no matter how you sell it, a sheltie is not big enough to work as a service animal for her, she needs something large enough to help her from sitting to standing position. Yappy is the kind of voice/bark they have, not how often they use it.

Good thing you talked her out of it, I can't imagine a husky working for help-ups as they are not always a solidly standing dog, not to mention their overall temperament.

Scarlet Fire Rose Lab/Cattle dog mix She had a bath, a de-worming, and nail clipping as soon as we got her home. She is a little on the thin side, but otherwise appears to be in good health. She has the lab shape, cattledog coloring. Her sister had the dark cattle dog face, and bigger paws but another lady picked her out first.

paw size doesn't make her a runt. http://petrix.com/dogint/1-10.html She is a mix of two of the top ten dogs on intelligence, and will get of a size that will be muscular with a lower center of gravity. and my mom has been raising red heelers for years, if she doesn't work out for some reason as a service dog she will still have a forever home.

^ cattledog x lab (probably lab) Smart dog, I call him my "12 hour dog" aka he can lie around the house for 12 hours without needing to go outside... You're looking at ~ 50 pounds here, and no, not small paws. Depends on if they get their height from cattle dog or from the lab. PS. My dog rules, nice choice Jezza.
