Boards Archive] |
Welcome to the Vault Network
forum archive.
This is not a complete archive, time didn't allot us the
opportunity to properly backup the majority of the boards
deemed "expendable". Most boards on this list have at least
20-40 pages archived (non-logged in pages, 15 topics per
page).
Popular boards may have as many as 250 pages archived at 50
topics per page, while others deemed of historical
signifigance may be archived in their entirety.
We may not agree with how the board shutdown was managed, but
we've done what we could to preserve some of its history in
lieu of that.
Please enjoy the archive.

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, 'Where have I gone wrong?' Then a voice says to me, 'This is going to take more than one night.' Elitist.

In the case of listing A, B, and C, the "Oxford comma" is the comma placed after the letter B. Some people use it and some people do not. This cartoon shows how using it or not can create very different situations. Rather than those all being separate entities, removing the comma pairs the last two together.

To be proper grammar the way that these Oxford people are reading the sentence it should be "We invited the strippers: JFK and Stalin." So technically they are being snooty about grammar and not following proper grammar to make the non-oxford comma users look bad /shrug

No. It's rarely followed, but if you're going to be persnickety, I'm afraid that what precedes and what follows a colon must both be complete sentences. "JFK and Stalin" is merely a noun phrase. Noun complements *may* be offset by dashes instead of commas, but the comma is the standard method of doing so. It is therefore entirely proper to read this sentence without the Oxford comma as a direct object with a noun complement instead of a list.
