South Korean government spent 70 billion over the past decade improving broadband. To equal that, the US government (on a per capita basis) would have had to spend more than 400 billion. You get what you pay for. They got the best broadband infrastructure on the planet. We got a stupid war in Iraq.

We'll never have public broadband of that nature here, telecoms are a mega powerful lobby and want the revenue they can get by driving.

You're only thinking in terms of per capita. Once you also figure logistical realities, the figure jumps dramatically. America as noted is a large spread out nation. Rolling out infrastructure here is not that cheap for a variety of reasons. Where nations are more physically condensed and have less physical obstacles, your costs are naturally lowered.

The "we are too big to be good" argument is the most asinine response ever. Optic fiber is perfectly suited for large distances. It's also relatively cheap, easy to install, and durable. If a country with 1/3 the per capita GDP and 1/7th the available manpower, that was a brutal hell hole full of uneducated people 50 years ago that was the poorest country in Asia can blanket their country with it, we certainly could do the same. Instead, we have stupid wars in countries halfway across the world and spend nearly 1 trillion dollars a year on "security".

I know just in MA there is a lot of empty space between Boston and Western MA. I've driven through Texas and the vast empty space between San Antonio and El Paso was staggering. All that empty space to string fiber optics will have to be paid for. I wonder how many empty spaces there are between Seoul and Daegu.

It's not public broadband. Private companies in partnership with the S. Korean government developed the system, and it's run by private companies....with very strict limits on pricing and very strict demands upon availability.

Thats how Finland is doing it...Our government is making broadband available to all by showering private companies with cash if they agree to pull fiber to low-profit areas.

Red states are a huge drain on federal coffers because, among many other things, transport and shipping to all areas within the US is subsidized afaik Should be consistent, either way.

Well, if your intent was to obfuscate with numbers, you succeeded. The problem with your simplistic per-capita number is that it completely ignores what has already been pointed out: 3,794,101 sq mi Now go re-run your numbers, using population density per square mile, and see what you come up with. Free clue: Verizon spent almost $30 billion just in their initial FIOS deployment. Ptilk posted: The "we are too big to be good" argument is the most asinine response ever.
I'm guessing you think that because you're an ignorant moran with absolutely no idea what the costs are. But, that's just a guess. I could be wrong I suppose. AzureTyger posted: We'll never have public broadband of that nature here,
Sure we will. It's already happening, just at a slower pace.

Even in counties or regions where America is as densely populated broadband speeds are not as fast as South Korea's, and the cost of the Iraq War would have covered far more than just a few hundred billion given that it incurred trillions in damages, and not just wealth transfers within the country.

A big part of the reason why public infrastructure works in East Asia is because a much higher level of public trust, in multiculti cesspools like American cities everyone hates everyone else.

Google posted: We'll deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today with 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We plan to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

Australia is of relative size to the USA and the govt here is attempting to build a national fiber optic network for $40 billion so just watch and see how that goes. It is way less cost effective in large countries because of all the extra network you have to build just to cover the distance. Plus then you have all the extra maintenance.

Isn't the vast majority of Aussie population strung out around the coastline? Would you need to run many line into the interior, or just ring the coast?

Well you gotta start somewehere. For natural reasons it will start in the parts of the US with the most dense populations, and spread inwards. It's a safe bet the more remote and rural areas won't have fiber any time soon, but that's no different from anywhere else in the world really.

smellymotor posted: Australia is of relative size to the USA and the govt here is attempting to build a national fiber optic network for $40 billion so just watch and see how that goes. It is way less cost effective in large countries because of all the extra network you have to build just to cover the distance. Plus then you have all the extra maintenance.
Isn't the vast majority of Aussie population strung out around the coastline? Would you need to run many line into the interior, or just ring the coast?
Correct, but you're still looking at 500-1000 km between any sizable populations. 2000+ once you head west

I dont admire then at all. They are all trying to escape the reality of a crazy neighbor just yards away from them ready to destroy them all in a moments notice.

Your welcome for all the food grown in those wide open spaces of red states. S. Korea appreciates it, also.
We pay for most of it with our tax dollars whether we want it or not.

Apparently red states get more farm subsidies than blue states that outproduce them on a per capita basis as well

I can upgrade my 100mb/100mb connection to 1000mb/100mb anyday, I don't because I won't use all that bandwidth, but it would almost be worth doing it just to keep on posting screens of my awesome bandwidth on the board

Tych2 posted: I know just in MA there is a lot of empty space between Boston and Western MA. I've driven through Texas and the vast empty space between San Antonio and El Paso was staggering. All that empty space to string fiber optics will have to be paid for. I wonder how many empty spaces there are between Seoul and Daegu.
Red states are a huge drain on federal coffers because, among many other things, transport and shipping to all areas within the US is subsidized afaik Should be consistent, either way.
Maybe the "red states" should just form a new nation and stop bothering you. You know, with things like FOOD.
