From what I understand Rift is doing modestly well. This is just an inevitable and common MMO business decision.
DAOC should have done this long ago but their revenue is so low, they cannot afford the development to convert it to a FTP model. Sad how Mythic ran the best MMO ever into the ground.

Sweet, I'm actually going to roll now and play it. I thought the game was really fun, I just couldn't get myself to re sub.. But if I can play for free I'll dick around the low levels with a few noob friends of mine

I tried one of their free-to-play weekends but didn't have the patience to figure out how to spec since nearly all my builds had been reset. Then again running from 1 - 20 would be a better way to figure it out.
It wasn't a terrible game, just vapid at the higher levels.

I think they are down to a dozen servers now from 60. If I had to guess, I'd say the subscriber base is about what DAoC was in the first years of it's existence, that is, enough to keep new content coming out.

In my opinion, F2P games are supported by microtransactions, but may keep a subscription model where you're given access to the basic game + microtransaction points every month. STO, LOTRO, DDO and the like are true F2P games. Games that let you play for free to a certain level and require a subscription past that are just using a demo model. Besides, it takes all of one or two gaming sessions to get to level 20 in Rift.

I call those fee based games. With LOTRO it's free if you do not want to do anything other than the options you're given. My wife has played it for months and not paid a dime. Same with Rift now, you can play it forever and not have to play anything. What I call free to play. Sure not all content is available, but meh. If you're happy with what is offered, there is no need to worry about all the content.

That's what they announced.."Rift is now free to play". And yeah, it comes down to semantics, but it's virtually the same across all MMO's. You get a free to play option that allows you to play the game for as long as you want without paying. The vast majority of them have that option...but then again, the vast majority are struggling to keep subscriber base up.

Oh, there's no doubt that the classic subscription model is failing, but there are dozens of choices now for online nowadays where there used to only be Everquest, AC and UO (I'm sure I'm forgetting some of the early contributors but those were the big 3 until SWG, AO and others came out).
