I want to boost my resume up and grab some certificates that are hardware/networking related. Any thoughts as to which would be most useful? I'm going to avoid Cisco ones for the time being since they involve lengthy course work.

honestly at this point, none. Experience > certs. Unless you get a cert in teaching other countries to support Americans. but if I had to choose, something with linux or Cisco. sad but true. *windows on VMware + blade type hardware second.

Linux is a good idea. I was thinking of the following: A plus Network plus Security plus MSCE - this will be a bitch Dell certs because they are so widely used in an enterprise environment. I need more ideas.

Just a tip in the event you are interested in government defense contractor (IT-related) or government defense IT positions, certifications are mandatory. Which one depends upon the application you are supporting in the event of a contractor or whatever systems you are expected to support as a gov't employee.

Certs are a good way to make sure you are learning the right stuff though. I've used cert guides to direct my learning before but never bothered to certify or learn all the tedious crap they usually require.

I actually have, or used to have not sure where it is now, 2 free cert exam test coupons or whatever that I got in college for Microsoft. I don't think they're valid anymore but if you're CS/IT in college I would check dreamspark.com I hear certified SQL architects can make a lot though on contract work if you don't mind traveling a lot. I always wanted to be a (whatever acronym they call architect these days) in SQL Server or windows development, not that I am great at all in writing the specific scripts or coding but the architecture I think I would love to do.

My reason for getting certs is to compensate for my lack of education. I am in the field and gaining experience, but I want an edge in getting a better job without the hassle of going back for more school. I work full time and have my kiddos.

Might as well go for it and get the ones that allow you to teach. MCSE, MCT, MCSA, CCNA, CCNP, CCENT, and you might consider getting the Linux administrator stuff, and as well as Unix, and SQL, if you wanna dabble in DBA stuff. Also there are some certs for security specialists.

MCSE is going the way of the Do Do as soon as they drop support for Server 2003.
The best industry certs are:
MCITP (The new MCSE)
CCNA (CCENT is just Part 1 of CCNA)
RHCE
Now, simply having a cert won't get you a job. But certifications can increase your pay, your position, or your longevity in the company. Many major companies require X amount of certified individuals to be employed to maintain their contracts with the big technology companies. (Microsoft, Cisco, etc)
Network+, Security+, A+...all useless in my opinion. We generally laugh at "technology" people that list these certs, unless it's with something substantial.
MCITP is at least a 5 test certification, depending on which way you go.
CCNA is 1 test (Or two if you decide to split it between ICND1 and ICND2)
CCENT is acheived after passing ICND1
CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) is in depth, and can be useful, but generally with another solid cert (Such as a Microsoft, Cisco, or Linux cert)
The biggest thing is what are you interested in?
If it's supporting servers, pick RHCE or MCITP
If it's network, start with CCNA and choose your discipline.
After passing your CCNA (Which isn't as hard as you think it is), you can go a number of different routes:
A> Design (1 test, you don't need your CCNA for this, but it helps)
B> Security (1 test after attaining CCNA)
C> Voice (1 test after attaining CCNA)
D> Wireless (1 test after attaining CCNA)
E> CCNP (3 tests after attaining CCNA)
What's coming down the pipe? What's going to be the most useful over the next 3-5 years?
Easy. IPv6, Virtualization (VMware)/Cloud Computing, Wireless, and Voice/Data.

What's your goal? Do you want to be an "on call" lackey that gets yelled at whenever some rogue user futtbucks the network and have to interrupt your LAN party to come in on a Sunday afternoon so the marketing tool can get his report ready for the sales meeting Monday morning all while making $60k a year or... Do you want to be an on call lackey that gets yelled at whenever some user can't operate the software you wrote for them because they're trying to make it do something for which they never ever specified a requirement to you while making $160k a year?

To give this guy some accurate information, I thought I'd look on a single company's jobs site to get a baseline of salaries:
This is all from the same area, so you're not comparing San Francisco wages to Wyoming wages, etc.
All these positions are the same level:
Application Engineers: $95,000 / year
Network Engineers: $95,000 / Year
Web Developer: $98,600 / Year
Operations Engineer: $99,300 / Year
Java Developer: $95,000 / Year
SQL/Database Engineer: $117,000 / Year
Now, these are not entry positions, nor are they long time employee positions.
If you're newer, expect 10-20% less salary, if you're a longtime employee, expect 20-30% more salary.
I just picked this range, because there were job listings for all these positions at the same "level".
So, if you want to make great money...learn SQL. However, if there is anything worse than staring at code all day, it's staring at SQL database code all day.
