I was watching this Technobufflo video last night and it made me laugh because it's so true. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiH280jkB4g Oh, the Galaxy S II is coming... Oh, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket is coming... Oh, the Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD is coming... Oh, the Motorola Razr is coming... Oh, the Motorola Razr Maxx is coming... Oh, the Transformer Prime TF201 is coming... Oh, the Transformer Prime TF700 is coming... You expect that when you buy a phone someone else will probably one up it a few months later. But it would be nice if the manufacture you bought the phone wasn't that one that made your phone seem obsolete two months later. Haha. Android manufactures should probably focus less on spewing the marketing with a new high end phone every month or two and try to hold back a bit and try to pack a few more features into the next phone before releasing it.

Im still clinging onto my nearly 4 year old (3 year contract) jailbroke iphone 3gs. does what I need it to do, and does pretty much everything else that any other phone can do. It's consumers that drive the market, and 'apparently' there is a helluva market for a new phone every 6-12 months. Who does this? I've had the same cordless phone in my house for almost a decade. It ain't broke, why am I 'fixing' it? And I bet you it lasts 5 times longer than any new junk that has been spewed out in the last decade haha. Funny how that works.

I gladly upgrade my device every 2 years when my contract is up, but I've heard of people who break contract to switch phones... seems crazy.

Phones as fashion. =/ A buddy of mine was doing tech support for our local cell/internet/cable monopoly and even though he was supposedly internet tech support, he had a quota of phone sales to make on inbound calls. If their phone was over 3 months old the policy was to let the customer know their phone would soon be obsolete. If it was over 6 months old it was mandatory for them to use the word 'obsolete.' The other thing was that if the call was for actual tech support his manager told him to transfer every time. (Back to the same exact queue he was in.) Sales quotas were the more important metric than actually doing tech support. He quit in disgust. (The phone stuff was official policy, the dumping calls was an asshole manager competing with the other managers.) Same thing happened when we worked at Dell though, they added sales quotas to tech support and made it a higher priority than doing tech support. We'd get berated for lack of sales, never mind that we had top 1% stats for resolution and call times, and stacks of 'kudos' emails from customers. Then Dell took the money (massive gov't incentives handed out to bring their business here) and moved all our jobs to the Philippines.

I don't get the gotta have the latest and greatest deal with technology these days either. My home phones are two over ten year old 900 MHZ cordless phones that work just fine and a well over 50 year old Bell phone that I could use to beat an intruder into senselessness and then use to call the police. My computers are a 2.8 GHZ P4 and a 2.66 GHZ Core 2 Duo. My truck is a 1997 Explorer. I seem to like old things.

The same people who have a family of 4 and needed a 6k sq foot house they're getting kicked out of. The same people camping out in some park somewhere complaining about rich people.

The differences between the very new phones and the phones from 1+ years ago aren't even very noticeable unless you are stressing your phones on purpose. I still use an original Evo 4G and, after straight comparisons to several "new and improved" Evos and other Android phones, have only noticed marginal improvements in every day use apps. The urge to get the latest and greatest phone is pure marketing and comes off as ludicrous to those of us who pay attention.

We are talking about smartphones, not feature phones. If you bought a smartphone and it's required expensive data contract, chances are you are doing a lot more than just talking on the phone. Lots can get by with their 4 year old iPhone 3. For others their phone is their mobile computer. They do a lot on these devices, probably even use them more than their home computers. They could get by with last years single core, 512MB, 800x480, model. But could do a lot more with this years dual core, 1GB, 1280x720 model.

I'm still using my old HTC HD2, on which I installed Android over the original Windows Mobile. It runs smooth including 3D games (1ghz processor with build in GPU), does everything I need, has a huge 4.3" touch screen... why waste money?

BTW engadget mentioned some rumors of Samsung Galaxy 3 coming. hehe I don't mind them coming with better phones all the time. For me the trick is to know what you want to use the phone for,and once you get one that does it to your satisfaction, not upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. Upgrade only if there is something you want to do that your phone isn't capable of. This goes for all kinds of upgrades, like computers for games - a lot of people upgrade their computers for a measurable but not noticeable performance boosts, which is pretty silly and wasteful to me.
