"Diablo III is supposed to be released in early 2012 but thus far Blizzard has yet to announce a release date. However, in a video to Korean D3 fans, game director Jay Wilson hinted that a date may be revealed soon.
"2012 will be a great year, because the Diablo series will finally make its long awaited return. We are currently working hard to deliver Diablo III to you and ensure that it lives up to your expectations," said Wilson (via Blizzplanet). "We plan to deliver nothing less than an epic gaming experience. The Release Date is nearing, and we eagerly await your return as the heroes of Sanctuary."

This kind of sounds that it'll be late 2012 at best...
If you played the Diablo 3 beta, admired its polish and reckoned the game couldn't be far from release, think again: game director and arch-tinkerer Jay Wilson has unveiled extensive changes to the game's systems, some minor, some major - and promised that even bigger revisions are on the way.
The way character stats and itemisation work is being changed, along with numerous adjustments to the interface, crafting and customisation systems - and "we're working on major changes to the skill and rune systems that we're not ready to talk about," Wilson said. And with that, the chances of the game seeing release in the first half of 2012 all but vanished.

I am really really trying to be excited for Diablo III, the spark just hasn't hit me yet. I just picked up Dungeon Siege for a couple of bucks, so I'm hoping that that game will warm me up a little bit.

Diablo is the Blizzard game franchise I have never understood the appeal of.
Probably because it is so nakedly shameless in its gear whoring and substitution of clicking through mindless hordes of enemies for compelling gameplay.

The fact that Diablo exists with its near perfect gear and loot system really makes it shocking that basically every other developer to ever make a similar game got it so wrong.
There is a clear model to steal from and yet they make one disappointing failure after another. It is like only Blizzard is capable of cashing in on the blatantly obvious. WoW is the same way except for the fact that they are progressively ruining their own system in the name of subscription retention.

But seriously. I really don't get it. I will agree with Yoss it has an almost perfect gear whoring system. But that is literally all the game offers. The combat is almost all mindless until you get to the very high difficulties, when it is no longer mindless but rather lame because you have to constantly kite and pop pots to deal with the ridiculous damage coming in.
And there is nothing to the game but loot and combat and maybe 5 minutes' worth of story that you see over and over if you play the game how they want you to play the game.
Is a good loot system really all it takes to make most people happy?

You're not doing a very good job of explaining the attraction.
Like I said, I agree with Yoss it has a great loot system. But as far as I can tell that's the only thing good about the series. The cutscenes are nice the first time around but there's like 5 minutes of them total in the game.
I mean, maybe a good loot system IS all people want. Or maybe people actually enjoy the totally mindless combat?

Combat is pretty mindless in most RPGs once you get the hang of them, and it absolutely is in every shooter
For me I liked the PvP in D2 despite the occasional cheats

I guess what I have trouble with is what you actually DO is so mind-numbing. Wading through thousand and thousands of totally mindless enemies always made me turn the game off after an hour or so.

Oh, I agree. It's not a game I can sit down for long sessions to, but it is fun for an hour or so. The thing is that its simplicity and quick pace makes it a game that is easy to return to from time to time.
It is like that neighborhood bar that you go to once in a while. It isn't great, but you know what to expect and it won't ever fail completely. There is a beauty to simple entertainment.
