DING DING DING! Apple posts q1 2012 results: $13.06 billion profit on $46.33 billion in revenue
|
yowza. TechCrunch posted: Apple just announced its Q1 2012 results, and the company booked a $13.06 billion profit on $46.33 billion in revenue, marking the biggest quarter in company history — well over 50 percent larger than its previous record in Q3 2011. Apple sold an astonishing 37.04 million iPhones, 15.43 million iPads and 5.3 million Macs during the quarter, which represent increases of 128 percent, 111 percent, and 26 percent from last year. That's two million more smartphones sold than Samsung shipped last quarter, which is astonishing. iPod sales were down 21 percent to 15.4 million, continuing their slow decline. International sales accounted for 58 percent of the quarter's results. It's an absolute monster of a quarter — handily beating analyst estimates and offering a sharp rebuttal to earnings that missed estimates last quarter.

No matter what you think about Apple you have to admit they are exceedingly good at extracting money from their followers.
Apple gives even Scientology a run for its money in that department.

So Apple, a company that uses slave and child labor makes 13 billion in profit = good. Oil companies make around the same profit and fill our state/federal coffers will billions in revenue from gas taxes alone = all that is evil in the world. Some things never get old.

Pretty easy to make record profits when you don't make any of your own product, instead you subcontract it out to Foxconn and let them use virtual slave labor in horrendous conditions make your toys for you for pennies.....and oh well when an amazing 10,000 of their workers a year are seriously injured or killed.

I met up with some friends for drinks this weekend and when I got there, one of them showed me her iPhone and told me it crashed. As I reached for it, she says, "ugh, I hope I don't have to bring it in to be repaired." I hold down one button while holding down the other button. That doesn't work, so I hold down the other button while holding down the first button. That worked, and as I handed it back to her, she says, "omg, how did you do that!" This is Apples target market.

I deal with stupidity like that on a daily basis.
90% Blackberry, 9% Apple, and 1% other.
Most iPhone users are coherent enough to not have to use the work "like" six times in every sentence.

Apple executives say that going overseas, at this point, is their only option. One former executive described how the company relied upon a Chinese factory to revamp iPhone manufacturing just weeks before the device was due on shelves. Apple had redesigned the iPhone’s screen at the last minute, forcing an assembly line overhaul. New screens began arriving at the plant near midnight.
A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day.
“The speed and flexibility is breathtaking,†the executive said. “There’s no American plant that can match that.â€

posted:
An eight-hour drive from that glass factory is a complex, known informally as Foxconn City, where the iPhone is assembled. To Apple executives, Foxconn City was further evidence that China could deliver workers — and diligence — that outpaced their American counterparts.
That’s because nothing like Foxconn City exists in the United States.
The facility has 230,000 employees, many working six days a week, often spending up to 12 hours a day at the plant. Over a quarter of Foxconn’s work force lives in company barracks and many workers earn less than $17 a day. When one Apple executive arrived during a shift change, his car was stuck in a river of employees streaming past. “The scale is unimaginable,†he said.
Foxconn employs nearly 300 guards to direct foot traffic so workers are not crushed in doorway bottlenecks. The facility’s central kitchen cooks an average of three tons of pork and 13 tons of rice a day. While factories are spotless, the air inside nearby teahouses is hazy with the smoke and stench of cigarettes.
Foxconn Technology has dozens of facilities in Asia and Eastern Europe, and in Mexico and Brazil, and it assembles an estimated 40 percent of the world’s consumer electronics for customers like Amazon, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Motorola, Nintendo, Nokia, Samsung and Sony.
“They could hire 3,000 people overnight,†said Jennifer Rigoni, who was Apple’s worldwide supply demand manager until 2010, but declined to discuss specifics of her work. “What U.S. plant can find 3,000 people overnight and convince them to live in dorms?â€

There is a logical explanation for that, you bleeding asshole.

I'm sure those people were treated wonderfully and the corporate dorms are nothing short of lavish. In fact, I would go so far as to say that these people should be lucky they have jobs! If it weren't for the benevolent executives at Apple these people would still be eating tree bark instead of leaves! If only we could be so lucky!

Exactly. These companies aren't taking advantage of people! They are providing them with opportunity and the American dream! We should all be wishing for the same thing! I mean, think about it, these people get their housing paid for by the company. They are fed by the company. Who could possibly want more than that?

I get your point. How do you stop the cycle? Stop buying corporate? How exactly do you do that? I'd LOVE to do that. I haven't figured out how though. I'm trying to do the "keep it local" thing but I'm finding it nearly impossible in many, many instances.

I'm confused. Does that mean we have to cheer it?
If I had my way China would pass laws that stop companies from abusing their workers the way they do. But I'm not the leader of China and I can't do that. I'm not sure that means I have to cheer our corporate overlords on just because I can't stop them.

The idea that corporations are going to be the conscience of the consumer and the nation is ridiculous. It will happen now and again but it will never be something to rely on.
One of the major problems with trade is that you can easily end up selling out your morality.
The only reason apple is even brought up is because of the reality distortion field steve jobs created around himself and the company.

P.S. In the case of Apple, it also isn't "enormously beneficial." All they do is assemble. The amount of value added is very small.
They could double the wages of the people there and cut their hours to only 8 per day and the cost of your ipad would go up by less than five bucks. Or Apple could keep the price the same and make 27% on top of materials costs instead of 30% on the top.
Chinese wage slaves bring down the costs of other products - like clothes, for example - much more.

I just don't really understand why you post about how their conditions are awful and horrible it all is. It concerns me that this is the way things are, but I'm not going to pretend like it doesn't benefit me. The devices I'm using to write this message were undoubtedly crafted somewhere with poor working conditions. I should be upset by it, but I'm really not. And neither are you. So stop pretending.

Some notes: China already has labor laws and a minimum wage as well as mandatory maternal leave and paid vacations - the problem is enforcement. The lower to middle class consumers in the developed world would have far fewer options if their minimum wage was raised too high, though. And if "jobs" were brought back to America via laws, they'd be given to robots, because they're cheaper than American workers. Chinese wages have been rising 10-15% a year for almost two decades now. The notion that China is "successful" because it runs on "cheap labor" and no environmental protections is retarded - wages and standards are even worse in India, Africa and much of Southeast Asia but no one moves there because their infrastructure is garbage and it costs 10-100x more to ship things within and out of said regions. Another draw is that the Chinese government is proactive and subsidizes foreign companies entering the nation by externalizing costs - either by paying partially or fully for the living costs of their poorest workers (food, health, education, housing, sanitation) or providing generous funding or support. tl;dr the right thing to do would be for American bankers and warhawks to stop making Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East poor in the first place (as well as stop destroying the American lower and middle classes) so there are more consumers on the planet. That would actually provide jobs for millions of Americans.

China's still relatively poor. People need to stop using GDP growth as a proxy for how "good" the economy is. But their success in development is owed largely to well-placed investments, not "cheap labor". Chinese people are more expensive to hire than Indians, Southeast Asians, most Latin Americans and Africans. They just have better infrastructure so it makes more economic sense to get your stuff made there.

China is the worlds cheap labor pool - thats the role the chinese industry has crafted for itself. And indians are dying to be the cheap labor pool of the world... When a country talks bout how they have so many people (slaves) as their greatest advantage then there you have it. China has too many people now, how can they all even get 5% of what the upper class of china enjoys? Never gonna happen.

dae is right about infrastructure being important.
You could hire "workers" for much less than they pay those chinese wage slaves in many parts of africa. But it doesn't make sense because assembly is only about 5% of the value of the product so your wage savings are small and they don't have functioning roads (or governments) in that part of the world.
China is not just about cheap wages. It is about cheap wages with a functioning state and decent transportation system.

no doubt there's an ugly side to the global demand for high quality cheap electronics, but i have to wonder how many people here condemn Apple while not questioning their own electronics - including pc manufacturers and their components, xbox, the sony ps3, the wii, etc... pretty selective outrage.

Stop infantilizing the Chinese. They actually are pretty good at taking care of themselves. Foxconn is a good example. They have even protested. http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/careers/3329268/foxconn-workers-stage-protest-in-chinese-city/ Ironically they were protesting being transferred not wages or conditions -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workers at a Foxconn Technology Group campus in China staged a protest last week, threatening to jump off a building if the company did not meet their compensation demands, according to local Chinese news reports. Foxconn, a manufacturer of electronics for companies including Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Dell, confirmed on Wednesday in a statement that the protest had taken place. About 150 employees at the company's Wuhan campus staged the incident on January 4, it said. "The incident was successfully and peacefully resolved later that morning after discussions between the workers, local Foxconn officials and representatives from the local government," the company said. Foxconn did not state what it manufactures at its Wuhan campus. The dispute occurred after workers were told they would be transferred to another business unit due to a shift in production lines, according to Foxconn. 45 employees decided to voluntarily resign, while the remaining workers chose to stay with the company.

Not even close. You do know that China outsources, yes? Exactly for the same reasons the US outsources. As far as I know, though, China has not outsourced regional/state functions as the US has done.

Does China still have traffic jams that last for several DAYS on its major thoroughfares? Also, I'm not exactly sure how this all plays into it but: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-16629278 Yeah...

edit: Also, Apple clearly doesn't compete on cost. So talking about it like it's inevitable that Apple is going to use slave labor is pretty silly. Apple has 30% margins. It is not one of those companies that sells at cost +2% and makes low price its primary selling point. There is no reason from the point of view of its business model that Apple has to use Chinese wage slaves who work 12 hours a day for 17 bucks.

In Beijing, I believe. But if China were to ban 70% of cars, you'd hear Americans shrieking about how it's a totalitarian intervention in the free market Cawlin posted:

Sometimes their arrests are justified. They usually get let out or simply put on house arrest a few years into the sentence. Anyone who wants to derail China's progress in terms of providing for the sick and the poor needs to be killed or maybe tortured, not imprisoned - of course, I'm not saying that's what the accused in this case are doing. That said the death penalty is on the table for Brad Manning even though his actions have unequivocally yielded good results.

Generally speaking when you follow the article posted with a statement like that, it (at least in my mind) renders anything you have to say after that as the most useless kind of absurdity... for kicks though I kept reading what you posted... (it's like a train wreck - sometimes you just gotta look as you go by) dae_trist posted: They usually get let out or simply put on house arrest a few years into the sentence. And I came to realize that yes, the rest of what you wrote was not worth reading and my inclination was correct in the first place in that I should have simply ignored what you wrote.

Yes, I disagree with your evangelizing dogma that has created a shit world in which tens of millions starve and die every year, I must clearly be insane. The architects of the greatest humanitarian miracle in human history are also evidently incompetent. Cawlin posted: So it's the number of cars, and not the lack of/poor infrastructure?
Did you actually use "lack of/poor infrastructure" in a sentence describing a Chinese "Tier 1" city? No, 50% of the air pollution is actually soil. A good half of the remainder is from local power plants, cars and industry, and the remainder comes from other provinces. But I'm sure someone will find a way to blame the Chinese government for the weather.

posted: The official pollution advice suggested the levels on Monday and Tuesday were acceptable. But the alternative readings posted on the internet by the US embassy, from its own monitoring equipment, indicated it was "very unhealthy" and vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, should not exercise outside.
The US readings reflect stricter pollution standards called PM 2.5 measuring particles less than 2.5 microns wide.
These tiny particles connected with car emissions, power stations and factories can have serious health effects as they travel deep into your lungs.
Beijing's authorities take PM 2.5 readings but don't release them. They only release larger PM 10.0 measurements.
A US embassy cable from 2009 released by Wikileaks said that China's foreign ministry had demanded the US stop publishing its embassy air-quality readings because they were "confusing" and "insulting" and could have "social consequences". The embassy refused.

India holds second place with 2.1 billion trees, followed by Ethiopia, Mexico and Turkey.
Though I do think they should step up their efforts. If they're going to be authoritarian they may as well do it right and just plow a few more billions into it.
